    I've been gardening since I was able to walk (79 years so far) and I certainly encourage everyone to grow stuff whenever possible. I'm a big champion of container gardening. Yours looks great. A lot of work, though. I prefer the old plow, mulch, and irrigate method, but that's not possible for everyone. I wonder how many know how we grow field tomatoes. It's still a thing with farmers in the central states. You start with well-tilled loamy soil, then we feed little tomato starts the size of a pencil with maybe two leaves into a tomato planter, dragging it behind a tractor. The tomato starts don't look like they could possibly grow, but they do. After 10 weeks the acreage is covered in deep verdant green foliage and the earliest tomatoes are ripe enough to pick. The season lasts from July into mid September. And no staking. No trimming. Just irrigate and watch them grow. A wonderful smell pervades a tomato field. Keep up with trying different heirloom varieties. There are some that are so sweet they actually make good pie filling. :-)
    Oh, and nice video, too.

    I'm in a 2nd floor apartment but have a decent sized balcony with full-sun. I've grown the indeterminate and dwarf indeterminate and they were monsters taking over too much space. Last year I selected determinant varieties and they were a perfect size with sweet fruit! I also add marigolds to my tomato planter. Pretty! You've got a gorgeous growing area!

    Great job!! 👍 I learned from a master gardener that all of those hair like fibers along the tomato stem are just waiting to come in contact with the earth, in order to root. Tomatoes are meant to grow on the ground, bush, and spread out. But us letting them do that would rot the fruit, so we grow them upright in cages. However, if you remove all leaves from the bottom and mid sections, just leaving the top leaves, then lay them on their side when you plant them. It’s actually at an angle, and bury everything but the top. That tomato 🍅 will root throughout the entire stem, creating a much more efficient root system, and it will also grow upward very quickly and stand up on its own, towards the sun, so you won’t be able to even tell you buried it sideways! Pretty cool huh? 🤔 Also, pulling off any blossoms when planting, will help the plant focus on the root system. Now I’ve gardened for a long time, so I did remove the blossoms, but I didn’t know about planting them sideways back when I planted this garden, so I’m planning to try it next year. Just thought I’d share, in case you wanted to try it too. :) I learn new things about gardening every year. Thanks for sharing.:) Take care!! 👌🌻👍🍅

    In my experience, Brandywine takes a lot longer to set flowers and fruit. Up where you are, I'm not surprised that you are experiencing what you are at this point. In the future, I would opt for a bigger pot for that variety. Maybe 10 gallon for a beefsteak like that. I'm currently in Orlando area, but grew Brandywines in Chicago for 10+ years. Trying to re-learn our growing seasons in Florida. It's different.

    Enjoy your channel very much. Making your eggplant parmesan this weekend. My daughter is vegetarian so I'm also digging your veggie sandwiches. I grow lots of tomatoes. I limit the varieties because that helps to prevent cross-fertilization. If I had more space I'd have many more variety. The best eating tomato I've come across is the Cherokee Purple, also known as Black Krim, depending on the producer. They're not only great eating, they're beautiful, sliced and on the vine. Keep up the good work.

    For my indeterminant plants, if I only have 2 or 3, I allow 3 branches from them to grow and prune out all others. If I have only 1? I let it grow whatever it wants heh. Great Vid.

    Let's go! I guessed the topic right in his post yesterday lol
    Edit: I've got a few things I want to say after watching your video and I left them as comments below. Hopefully you see this Steve! (Your tomatoes are looking gorgeous btw)

    • @yybbhn
      @yybbhn 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      With most indeterminates, you're best leaving 2-3 leaders and removing the other suckers. That should maximize your output since you just have one stand alone plant. If you've got a bunch in a row, you're better off with just one leader.

    • @yybbhn
      @yybbhn 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the determinate, I've been taught to prune all suckers below the first "fruit cluster" (the first set of flowers coming off the main stem). Not sure about your dwarf guy, and at the end of the day it's your plants, not mine, but that's what I've learned working on a sustainable farm :D

    • @yybbhn
      @yybbhn 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You might not be getting flowers because it's not hot enough in NY. What's the weather been like for you in the past week?

    • @yybbhn
      @yybbhn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Last thing, please please please, make sure you water the base of the plant, not the leaves. If you're having to throw away diseased leaves that can be quite worrying. Watering at the base can help avoid some diseases. Standing water on leaves can promote disease, especially on the leaves themselves. Looked like the leaves you threw away were yellowing, that could also be a sign of the plant not getting enough nitrogen.

    Looks good so far for your first go at growing! I’d move your one tomato you showed first, that you said didn’t have super tasty tomatoes into the sun! Tomatoes are sun loving plants and it will likely do better over by the rest of the others! I also watch MI gardener and he’s extremely helpful, I saw you had linked him in the description. I truly listen to him like he’s the gardening master lmao bc of how much experience he has growing and the fact he stays to natural and organic ways of doing things. I also highly recommend looking into Roots and Refuge. It’s primarily ran by a woman named Jess, and she has so much going on. They’ve been gardening for a bit and have SO much growing, and she’s just nice to listen to. She also does full harden tours which are cool to watch. I specifically recommend her to you though because she grows TONS of tomatoes! Ps aphids are pronounced “ay-fids” 🤓

    heirlooms are not all the same, brandywines have a longer time from planting to fruiting, i believe 90 days, whereas your cherry tomatos are probably more like 60-75ish days. great job on this videos btw, really enjoying them

  • @rredd7777

    The Brandywine is more of a late season tomato. They don't seem to form clusters, though it probably depends on the specific type you have: I've seen a lot of variation in Brandywines. Some Brandywines are real monsters: HUGE mutant looking fruits weighing over a pound if not several. Like two or three tomatoes fused into one. Big, but they can be slow to ripen, sometimes even taking over a week for the whole tomato to ripen from one end to the other. Other Brandywines are less problematic.
