As a Newfoundlander who has lived here for 62 years and studied history this Island was made up of many cultures, mainly English who held the power in a British Colony,Fact ,then Irish,Scottish, Portuguese, some French and Chinese etc..There existed slavery here for hundreds of years, they were white Irish slaves who were treated like second class citizens by Politicians and British court systems. Many stories of horrific treatment. In today's society of social justice warriors, let's not forget what went on here.

@@mark_royle_newfoundland I admire you and am making this observation in a friendly way BUT - that's somewhat contradictory. It is actually not a strange comment if it comes from such a common mindset since "strange" implies "unusual". But that's a secondary observation I am making.
I am REALLY here to talk about your good understanding of what racism truly is. When someone has the need to say they are not racist (for the sole purpose of modifying their harsh words), they are almost certainly racist! As you have already implied...why else would someone feel the need to - quite arbitrarily, I might add - declare "they are not racist"?
The fact that she can actually take the time to put those statements in print before checking herself says much about her "brilliance". I am trying to be as polite to her as I can possibly be.

I spent 31 years in the GTA. Lived - well, slept - in Brampton and worked in Toronto. Back in NL now. I never had any issues with living in one of the most culturally diverse areas on the planet. It didn't take anything away from me, and broadened my understanding - of my own culture, as well as of the world.
I remember coming home once, and going to see a movie. Standing in line for popcorn, I looked around and saw one, lone, brown-skinned person and suddenly realized "everyone is WHITE!" After years in ON, that just seemed odd.
These days, in St. John's, there's a vibrant mix. I'm good with that. I think we have a great place here, but it's in danger of dying off if we don't have immigration. Will this change our culture? Probably; culture that's vibrant is always changing. For me, that's a good thing.
On my street, there are a lot of people of varying skin tones and ethnicities walking past my house daily. Makes me proud knowing that they could have gone anywhere, but chose to join us.
Keep up the good work, Mark!

As someone who is a born and bred Newfoundlander, whose family goes back 9+ generations, I am always so happy to see new people come to this island! Whether its to go to Memorial University, or for work, or even for a vacation, I always love to see it cause I always think how much better the Province will be with them here.
From bringing their culture and food with them to make our own culture more rich a varied, to the skills and talents they are bringing in, immigration, on the whole, is a good thing for this Province. It will help to build and strengthen the economy, boost various sectors of work, and add to the rich cultural heritage of this place.
are their going to be problems with immigration? Absolutely! You can't consider a topic as big and varied and nuanced as immigration without running into issues. People are people, and people can be assholes. There are New Canadians who are coming in who are assholes, and there are New Canadians who are coming in who are the nicest people you will ever meet, just like how there are nice and assholeish Newfoundlands. Every immigrant is different, just as every Newfoundlander is different, and to paint them all with the same broad stroke is just not a good way of looking at the situation.
And as for the change to our culture. To that I say that our culture is already changing and has been since Humans started to walk upright and use fire! Culture isn't a static thing, its a living thing that grows and changes and evolves as the people who make it do, and I think that Modern Newfoundlanders would find Newfoundlanders from the 1500s, 1600s, and 1700s all very different from each other and us. So I don't get the fear of culture changing, its already changing, now its just changing in a different way! Also, just to add to that, just because new cultures are coming in and helping to change this one, doesn't mean we have to give up everything with our cut lure. Just because an Indian or Sushi restaurant is opening up doesn't mean the Fish and Chip place has to close down. We'll keep what we like and store the rest away for history.
I guess all of that is to say I really agree with your video, which was very good by way!

I was going to write a comment here but after reading Keith Osmond’s comment, he has said everything I was going to say. By the way, I’m a pure English descent. Does that mean I’m not a Newfoundlander? My families have been here since the 1700s. I love our Irish heritage. It’s a great spice to the overall population which consists of English Irish French and anyone else that decided to settle here. we are a welcoming province, and even if the gentleman who wrote this comment, decided to settle here, we would probably welcome him.

" I love our Irish heritage" in a decade that'll not be something you're allowed to say if you are a kid in the public school system. You do not understand what is happening. You won't be able to point out the importance of Irish Culture because you're then putting down cultures that aren't from here. And I know you don't understand what I'm saying you can't believe it to be true, that's the point, you can't because you don't know what is coming. Your family has been here for 250 years and importance of that will be erased in a few decades. 300 years of history and family will be rewritten and forgotten.

Except he's just flat out wrong and absurd in his statements. It's not about race. If 200,000 Irish Ontarians moved to Newfoundland it'd completely destroy the culture. Heck if a 100,000 newfies who spent too long on the mainland came back it'd hurt the culture. What makes Newfoundland unique is exactly its isolation. I don't have a problem with immigration when it isn't a threat to the local culture, but the way things are set up it will be. And you describe exactly the narrative that is used, any action you take to preserve your culture gets described as racist. Your kids aren't even allowed to learn about their culture without it getting lensed through racism. If you don't allow for a mature discussion on the topic, it'll just be cultural genocide as it was with the Gaelge speakers in Ireland/The French/Natives etc. Culture is incredibly easy to destroy and very hard to protect. The thing that is so striking is just such a profound level of ignorance that goes along with the topic. Cultures get destroyed when places become too globalized. This isn't unique to white countries. This is a massive problem throughout Asia and Africa. Small minor populations have their cultures wiped out. It's a brutal destructive force of globalization. You can go throughout the world and just seen entire ethnicities of people evaporate. There's a supreme level of white arrogance that goes along with his attitude. "Our culture is so strong and powerful we can't be taken down" It's like nah, this is just how globalization works, everything gets steam rolled. Newfies are no different than rural minorities in China, Iran, Pakistan, Indonesia or India .

We are an island in the North Atlantic with a birthrate about half what we’d need to keep our population from declining and a serious outmigration issue. The icing on the cake is that we are a rapidly graying population. The median age in some parts of rural Newfoundland is in the mid 50s.

I just consider myself a Canadian. One that is a Newfoundlander (My roots are American and British for the most part). My culture consists of Canadian and Newfoundlander as I believe it is an awesome mixture even with parts outside my roots.
I am not even understanding what this person wants us to see in Canada and the west? A right wing mindset (not an attack, a simple question to understand as I was totally confused)? I wish that would have been elaborated by them.
As a side note, the west coast has a very strong French and Indigenous culture as do other parts of the Island. Scandinavian (Vikings), Spanish roots here as well, etc. It is a mixture. Has the person seen more than the east coast? Coming from west to east I have noticed more Irish dialect than some other parts, but that's about it. I also noticed on the east coast more multiculturalism and acceptance, which was very refreshing.

"I am not even understanding what this person wants us to see in Canada and the west? A right wing mindset (not an attack, a simple question to understand as I was totally confused)? I wish that would have been elaborated by them." A careful immigration policy that factors in culture. Where the education system actively tries to promote and protect the local culture. Instead you get the opposite, a "multiculuturalist" attitude where the idea of even promoting newfoundland culture and traditions is considered racist. Simple things like Newfoundland not being a part of Canada until the 1940s will be left out of the discussion. The whole attitude is "if we praise one persons ancestry and culture we're putting down the culture of others". Even the idea that kids should learn Newfoundland history and not just Canadian history will be offensive to parents.

Culture will change with immigration and with other influences. We will continue to become a global village. Some people will feel a loss. Some things will be lost. Language evolves and some languages die. Do we want to prevent that? More importantly, can we prevent it? Indigenous and French Canadians hope they can maintain their language and "culture" -- whatever that specifically refers to. But the forces of cultural change are bigger than any policy or law can hold back. Best to welcome change.

" Immigration isn't the problem it's the multiculturalism that goes along with it. The education system pretty much has free reign to do whatever it wants. And it'll continually attack the local culture. Newfoundland culture will get reduced to white people coming in and destroying the land and the natives, and that's all the kids will learn about. It's already that way in Ontario.

nothing wrong with you have your own culture just like other races and if other races of people are coming their they need to respect the culture of nfld just like if you go to other countiries you have to respect and follow their rules and culture and i loved nfld and they are not racist

Im 35 and funny enough i remember seeing my first black person i was around 5, not because we were racist but because of 2 other reasons. 1 being it was something we didn't talk about because race really doesn't matter but mainly 2 there just wasnt very many immigrants here. The past 5 years alone ive seen many businesses opened by people who immigrated here and just in my immediate area there are 2 African stores 1 chinese and 1 Filipino grocery aswell as some arab/ halal places. Im happy to see many different cultures and ethnicities here now as i get to learn cool things and meet amazing people that other wise wouldn't. As a side note i do seem to hear some people have this idea that our government is only helping non natives to NL, i just dont see jt that way

You have no idea what is happening in Ontario. Everyone has a brave face as long as they can turn to their own culture in day to day operations. You live on the cultural king of the hill, and you're spoiled with the idea that it's always gonna be that way. When you realize you can't find a fish and chips place because they've all been replaced with other foods you'll realize the issue. Again you take for granted that you're in the superior position. People take their culture for granted when they live in it. In 20 years St John's will be virtually identical to Toronto-Chicago-Austin Texas-London England etc.

I've been interested in this topic a lot lately, because I had an epiphany a couple of years ago. For the past 500 yrs. the West, Europe and then America conquered and then dominated the world, but now I think the worm has turned, the third world is now invading the first world. Not in terms of power but in terms of people. This is the problem with liberals and the Left, they don't understand that people from different cultures and different parts of the world are different. Like really different, different on a level that you can't even comprehend. You must be really careful who you let into your country, just like you must be careful who you let stay in your house. Look what's happening to Western Europe, they let in people who not only do not assimilate but who actually want to conquer and take over. It's bad to be racist, it's bad... On the other hand there is nothing wrong with preserving your cultural identity and values, in fact it's paramount! Let in people, but very few, and vette them well. And for God sakes keep the Alluhah Akbar crowd out.

There’s a difference between sustainable migration, and what we have now, however…
2023 broke records. 1.2 million new residents. Now, Q1 of 2024 had 47% more immigrants than 2023.
I am a 2nd generation immigrant, but… the government is mismanaging this severely, dude. In an era where cost of living is at historical highs, Ottawa is laser-focused on continuing to break immigration records.

And think of the poor people who got sold the scam of the Canadian dream. Many sell their businesses, and apartments, and leave their lives behind.
Just to come to Canada and be met with work and shelter shortages, and often a severe drop in living standards.

As an American, nothing strange about this comment. We are facing our own issues with lax border security in our own country. Difference in America is we're used to a very diverse group of people, except everyone at some point assimilates into American culture at some point. We are starting to look at multiculturalism through a negative lens. Given the political correctness that Canada has been experiencing, its best they take our lead in this area and do the same, or the values will change for the worse. It's already happened throughout the UK and the EU.
