    I got into cameras earlier this year, and this was the first Apple event where I knew what all those camera spec numbers meant.
    I'm still a rookie, but the 13 Pro camera features have gotten me so excited, with these tests making me even more so.

    Fantastic review!!! So glad I landed on this video as I’m researching iPhone 13 options now. Wondering if you think third party camera apps like Pro Camera and Filmic Pro will be able to incorporate the cinematic mode (perhaps allowing 24p shooting). I’m a wedding filmmaker and you are right, there are times when I need to grab some extra b-roll when on-site. The iPhone comes in super handy when all my gear is packed and ready to head to the next location and I see something really neat to capture (for a few seconds here and there to cut into the final film). I think they crippled the 24fps cinematic mode to have something to "update" moving forward. These phones are getting so good they are starting to run out of things to upgrade.

    • @dandansfu
      @dandansfu 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Oh totally apple is good at that if you look at the history of phones they usually give 1-2 big feature with other smaller update and new color when there is no design change
      When they give night mode they only give to the main lense then next year they add one more lense
      Same as image stabilization
      Always just one or main lenses then next year the same feature expand to other lenses ( like does it really need one year to develop the same onto other lenses )
      Or how Touch ID and Face ID is a bit faster on next year model ( which I’m sure it’s just some setting they disable or change some algorithms a bit )

    There is a place for filming with a phone, but I'm still of the school of thought that if you want better photographic or cinematic performance then buy a cheap phone (demi-flagship from 3yrs ago) and a good camera. There are small cameras like the Sigma fp which are incredible and cost barely more than an iPhone. Even the Ricoh GR which is panned for its video, would be a far better use of funds if these capabilities are important. I like the new iPhones 12 and 13 because they are handy devices, and have returned to the iPhone4 aesthetic - I would buy one for that reason foremost, but I've done without one since gthe iPhone4S now, so I'll likely wait for these to become cheaper, and buy a Sigma fp or S1 in the meantime. Thx.

      Agree! This youtube video is shown in 30fps on my computer. He filmed himself in 24fps. How is the transition from 24 to 30 happening? Isn't that bound to be jerky? Most of those people who 'demand' 24fps have probably never considered this question nor understood it. Maybe they want the jerkiness and believe that this jerkiness due to conversion from 24 to 30fps IS THE CINEMATIC look that they want. LOL.

    This is not a good upgrade. Speaking of cinematic mode it doesn't work and is 1080p. I always watch these videos on my 8K TV and all videos captured with phones look bad. As an owner of a cinema camera for professional work there's no comparison. Phones don't come even close. Those cameras are made to share in social media. As for the iPhone 13 it's a very good phone but as an iPhone 12 owner there's no need to upgrade. Maybe if next year they put a USBC and no notch I will consider it. Trying transfering ProRes over lighting cable is too slow.

      @@WargodFilms yeah I'm sure that's the main reason. I'm just wondering if in their thinking they might have thought even though the goal is to get it working at 24 fps, 30 fps will work for now as most of this stuff will end up on social anyway.

    Doesn’t matter what frame rate you shoot at if you don’t have an ND filter to slow down the shutter, it will look bad. The flares happen because Apple puts a piece of glass over the lens to protect it. Just like a pro camera you need a hood on the lens to prevent lens flare.

    My opinion of cinematic mode is jumping around a lot. Apple's keynote made it look really impressive. Then a bunch of reviews I saw made it look kind of awful (the cut-outs/transitions in particular). Now, as with portrait mode, finding out tightening the fake aperture up a bit helps immensely... my opinion is much more positive again. Shame it's locked to 30fps though. I see no reason why lowering it to 24fps wouldn't be possible. 6 fewer smart HDR and depth mapped calculations per second seems like it would only be easier...?
    Also, yes please on that professional workflow video.

    Great review at very nice locations. Re your question on cinematic mode available only in 30fps (rather than for 24 or 25fps) I would assume the following: As the algorythm for cinematic mode is still new but complicated, Apply probably needed to make a decision for one framerate for launching their product. And, the most common PC and Apple monitoring framrate is 60Hz which perfectly resonates with 30fps. In Davinci Resolve, you could reduce to 24fps using their motion flow algo that is awesome.
    I myself, switched my Lumix S1H to permanently filming on 30fps after having recognized terrible flicker on 60Hz monitors and iPads.
    To avoid flicker with electric light in the EU (50 Hz), I select shutter angle of exactly 209 degrees - and everthing works fine.

    I love cinematic with 60 fps nowadays. maybe it's because I play video games a lot I love 60 fps only. 24 fps was used not because it looked cinematic but because it was a requirement back then to cut the cost of the reel. It was the minimum requirement for fps they could go until people get a headache.

    I don’t understand why people prefer 24fps instead of 30fps or 60fps. 30 and 60 are way smoother. *Why? Why 24fps?* 🙈

      In my case its just because my primary camera is a sony a6500 aps-c which crops the sensor if you shoot 4k30 so to get the most light (which i need since its not FF) i work in 24 and balance the rest of my footage around that.

    What makes you love the ultra wide so much? Is it mainly good for landscapes? I’ve heard others say that the wide lens is best overall quality? I don’t know anything about cameras but found your channel very interesting!

    • @alvareo92
      @alvareo92 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a really large and crazy perspective, you can get some very creative shots with an ultra wide. But they will put the most resources on the lens and sensor of the main wide camera, because it’s what you’ll use the most and because physics wise it’s easier to design a perfect wide than a perfect ultra wide

  • @simonmaney3438

    Those very annoying 'ghosting spots' are sensor reflections, most likely because the lens elements are so close to the sensor. Ironically, they are probably off the back of the front element with all its coatings which are to reduce lens flare.
