You start up your composter with either cardboard or simple, thin paper. When your pile is up to 2-3 feet, AND you have managed to keep a moist top and dry bottom, you simply rake out from underneath, as little (or much) as you like. The soil will be 'selfcontaing', if that makes any sense, and only release as much as you rake out. And for your question about the worms; The Red Wigglers tend to stay in the top 1 - 1,5ft layer, so they will have no interest to the lower part of your pile, hence my suggestion to exercise the art of having a dry lower half of your pile. Below, you can see the raking.. th-cam.com/video/18Gthz0ftGM/w-d-xo.html
Excellent - thank you for the video. I have the European fire worms/red worms, that aren't frost tolerant, so i will build a bin like yours, but i will need to insulate it, and maybe even put a small heating element in there with a thermostat, just to keep it above freezing.
You’re welcome. It shouldn’t be to difficult to insulate it. Especially if you use foam board insulation. I have thought about doing that myself but I got through the last few winters okay.
What keeps the worms, the food scraps, or the bedding from falling down through the conduit to the bottom?
