    This is what started me in jewellery making back in the early seventies, could not keep up with the demand, I used a torch back then and still do even on Silver and Gold

      Enameling is fun. And, it can really expand what you offer as a designer. Have a great new year! : )

    It's a good point about doing test piece, even if you have a catalogue as reference. The colours look different on copper, silver and gold. Hope you and Don are doing well. Happy new year.

      Yes, test pieces are critical. We show how to make some in other enameling videos. Thanks for your comment. Have a great 2020! : )

    Short but sweet. Have watched the longer video and it's a great primer, John. Have many of my grandmother's lead based enamels in storage, your video reminded me to get them out.
    Obviously need to take more care with them but will they work with torch firing or only with a kiln?? Love the channel, learn a lot!

      Glad you enjoyed the video. There is a longer version as well as other enameling videos in the OJA playlist. Yes, please take precautions when working with the lead based enamels that you have in storage. Best wishes for 2020! : )

    Hi Can you tell me why is it every time I take my piece out of the kiln the the enamel has pulled away from the edge. thanks
    John

      Without the advantage of being able to see your work, my best guess is that you are enameling on copper and not “stoning” the edges between firings. Oxidation that forms on the edges of a piece during firing is creeping up on the top surface. The enamel will not flow on top of a dirty surface. If you don’t have a stone, try sanding the edges under water. I hope this helps. Good luck! 🍀

    Hi Thanks for the quick reply I understand what you are saying but its the first firing that this happens any idea

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy
      @OnlineJewelryAcademy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My best guess is that your metal isn’t completely clean. Try using pumice to clean the metal before you fire your enamel. The OJA has a video on that topic in it’s playlist. 😀

    Can you pickle the completed pieces to remove oxides?

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy
      @OnlineJewelryAcademy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Penny Brite will remove the oxides. If you pickle the piece you will etch the surface of the enamel and dull it. Have fun! : )

    Hey I’ve been struggling trying to find a paint enamel that doesn’t require a torch per say. Suggestions?

      @@testingti what you’re looking for are liquid resins that are cured with UV light. 🥸

      @@testingti I don’t know 🤷🏻‍♂️. Plus, I don’t know if they are safe for that purpose. You’ll need to do some research. 🧐

    Is liquid enamel that is sold the same as what you made in the pallet with the Klyr Fire?

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy
      @OnlineJewelryAcademy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For some reason I can’t view you recent comment. Liquid enamel and powdered enamel suspended in Klyr Fire are quite different. 😀

    Hi there. Thank you for another great tutorial. I was wondering if I'd be able to use this process on bronze clay pieces after they've been fired? Thank you

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy
      @OnlineJewelryAcademy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't believe that the enamels would work on bronze. They are formulated to work on copper, silver and gold. But, you can always contact thompsonenamel.com to see if they have a product that will work on bronze. : )

    Eyyyy look at those two thumbs-down... you still got it, John! You know you made it when random people's lives revolve around giving thumbs-down as soon as you post something. ;) OK that thing where you "store" the powder in the palette and hydrate with Klyr-Fire is cool! I've been afraid to try enameling and now I feel like maybe I wanna dig up my enameling powders and try again.

      Hi Kim. You should totally try this technique out for yourself. It's fun. Watch the longer version of the video before you start. I put the link the that tutorial in the description. I'll bet you get hooked on enameling quickly. Have fun! : )

    When buying enamel, i noticed they also sell liquid enamel. What's the difference between powdered and liquid enamel?

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy
      @OnlineJewelryAcademy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Liquid enamel is used primarily for coating a large surface area. They are useful for creating background colors on tiles. They work well. However, they will not produce the same results as powdered enamel. And, they do not offer you the same opportunity to create delicate color shifts. You can learn more about liquid enamel from thompsonenamel.com. : )
