I think they played it because the MTV awards that year were in Germany. This song was number 2 in the charts in West Germany (before the fall of the Berlin Wall) when it came out in 1987 - therefore the most popular for the audience. Everyone thought they will play something from their 2001 Exciter so it was a surprise. An epic surprise.
