How to Reset the Maintenance Light on a Toyota 4Runner 2003-2009

Here I demonstrate the step by step process of how to reset the maintenance light on a Toyota 4runner. The Maintenance light is scheduled internally in the computer to notify the driver when it is time for an oil change. In my opinion it waits way to long to come on, so I normally track my mileage anyway. From time to time the light pops on in between oil changes and which case it needs to be reset. david welch, on the old models it’s acautlly a computer malfunction that can happen with a dead battery or even just some type of unusual computer start up. But if the problem persist it could be a faulty gas cap not sealing all the way anymore.

For anyone else reading this, the procedure is the same except that in the later 4th gens, you hold the odometer mode cycle button while turning the key to the on position since there is no reset button.

@@AmbientShades I can't swap mine, I'm going for 500k on the odo...at 327 and counting. I bet that somebody with enough skill could just tap in to the gauge cluster at the plunger switch and wire two pushbuttons on to it, mounted somewhere on the dash.

How many miles does it take for it to come back on again?

It is actually programmed to come on after about 7500 miles. It normally will start blinking or staying on longer when you start the vehicle at about 5000miles.
Call me old school but I personally like to still change my oil every 3000miles. So I don’t necessarily go by the light.
You can never change your oil too much but you definitely can accidentally not change it enough!

For those who dont have a rest button, use the select nutton that cycles your mileage and trip. That is your rest for 2006 range.
