I'm a huge fan of the Swan Lake ballet. Oksana was very graceful and daring but she OWNED it once the coda started. She looked like an actual ballerina dancing on ice. No wonder she was the ice skating sweetheart ❤
Great wing-like arm movements - she is very believable as a swan! she even does a beautiful port de bras pose right before her triple loop: technically impressive and adds artistic passion, poise, intricacy and power!

And yet when Oksana took gold, the media were bleating about how she "came out of nowhere to win." Being the reigning world champion is hardly "out of nowhere" . . .
One of my all time favorite Olympic performances. The best skating performance I've even seen. It was everything I expected for Swan Lake. If you watch her biography it makes it even more poignant. She was meant to be a gold champion.
Japan was way ahead than the rest of the world in braodcasting and telecom technology from the 1980s to early 2000s. So much so that many of their highly advanced telecom standards and gadgets which were already in widespread local adoption became 'isolated' from the rest of the world (leading to the phrase 'Galapagos Syndrome'). For e.g., going online with mobile phones was already commonplace there by late 1990s (but virtually unheard of elsewhere). Unfortunately the bursting of their bubble economy hit the industries hard; these days, they are a pale shadow of their past dominance (though still fairly strong relative to all but the most technologically advanced nations).
The way she pauses in the spiral glides and lets the image linger - draws out the beauty of the music so well - and even the setups for spins are smoothly elegant (and technically, skated with impressive steadiness and speed).
and that closing combination spin - holding on to the free leg until the very last moment - shows off her balance and also the character so well! gorgeous, technically assured and expressive! That is truly gold-medal quality skating.
Even now, not a lot of skaters hold such a difficult and acrobatic spin pose that long after they've started spinning, that takes a lot of stamina. It expressed the closing intensity of the music very well also.
My fave of all the skate that had performed the Swan Lake it's still this one! Oksana had tech flaws on her landings specially on landing and height. However that artistry is just magnificent.
