  • For our special 100 subscriber celebration, based on your guy's votes, we have the Styracosaurus. One of the most famous ceratopsians rivaled only by the Triceratops. What about this dinosaur gives it such recognition? Today, we will seek to answer that question.

    This is so wonderful to see a video about the Styracosaurus, my favorite childhood dinosaur alongside Carnotaurus.

      He was my favorite too! I used to be a major Triceratops fan, but then I saw this guy and thought "OK, so Triceratops but cooler". Don't worry, we'll come back around and give Carnotaurus their time in the sun too!

    Styracosaurus is one of the most common members of the ceratopsian family. It first appeared around 75 million years ago and lived up to the extinction of the dinosaurs about 10 million years later. It had one long nasal horn over its beak, and had many long horns over the top of its frill, which it used for head-butting matches against rivals for leadership to the herd and mating rights to females, as well as for defense against predators like Tyrannosaurs and Raptors. It lived alongside other species of dinosaurs such as many of its relatives, like Einiosaurus, Torosaurus, Chasmosaurus, Centrosaurus, Pachyrhinosaurus and Triceratops, hadrosaurs, like Edmontosaurus, Corythosaurus, Parasaurolophus and Lambeosaurus, Ankylosaurs, like Edmontonia, Euoplocephalus and Ankylosaurus, and predatory theropods, like Tyrannosaurs such as Gorgosaurus, Albertosaurus, Daspletosaurus and Tyrannosaurus rex, and Raptors like Dromaeosaurus and Troodon. It is known from the movie, Dinosaur (2000), particularly as Eema, and the TV Shows, Dinosaur King, as Thorn, and Dinosaur Train, but has never made much of an appearance in any Documentaries, except for Bizzare Dinosaurs (2009). It is also from the Jurassic Park/World video games, like Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis and Jurassic World: Evolution 1 & 2.
    Anyway, Can’t wait for my request on Parasaurolophus, and I have a few more requests for you as well.

      So am I! Feel free to post your requests in comments, as I try to go back and read through comments (especially Ceratosaurus) to find your guy's suggestions. Or you can email them to thedinobasics@gmail.com, whichever you prefer!

    It's fairly obvious that the frill was to protect the neck from predator bite. It would have flattened against the back as its horn gored the predator to death.

    • @DinoBasics
      @DinoBasics  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not necessarily. If it was purely for defense, then the inclusion of large air pockets would be fairly pointless and only weaken its largest defense. It definitely held value for defense, but most likely served a dual purpose.
