  • The contest for "Largest Predatory Dinosaur" is a competitive one. Dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus Rex, Spinosaurus, and Giganotosaurus all compete to stand apart as the most titanic of killers. Carcharodontosaurus is another such contender, granted it is absolutely not the largest, but hey it's still pretty big. Carcharodontosaurus was a ferocious meat-eater packed with hundreds of deadly teeth and towering over much of it's competition. But simply "being kinda big" is not enough to compete with some of the other enormous carnivores roaming Africa during the Cretaceous. What helped Carcharodontosaurus stand apart as one of the original kings of Africa? Let's find out!

Two additional mentions in media for
    Carcharodontosaurus.
A playable mod in the game “Path of Titans”
I rather bizarre mention though, is its appearance in “Dinosaur Planet” in the episode “Alpha’s Egg”.
It is stated in the behind the scenes features for dinosaur planet, that the animal is Carcharodontosaurus. Yet the fossils attributed to it, are now classified as the large Megaraptorid, Aerosteon.

      Huh, fancy that.
Also found out as the reason why Dinosaur Planet; although one of the better Dino docs that I do enjoy; has always bothered me in certain details.
Things like why some animals are in places where they shouldn’t be, such as the wrong formations, or even the wrong continents. And why some of the animals mentioned do not look like the actual animals they are supposed to represent.
And that is with the discovery of who the paleontological associate is for the series.
The WORST person to choose for paleo taxonomy, *sigh* Gregory S Paul. -_-‘
He’s OK when it comes to size estimates; he’s abysmal with animal taxonomy.
Sing is this is the Paleontologist that tried to lump Deinonychus as a species a Velociraptor back in the 80’s & 90’s. Worse that he’s still doing it with many other species & genus.

thank u for this video, great information, no obvious mistakes, no outdated information, tons of extra stuff on the history of the fossil destruction in ww2, no exaugurated features to make the dinosaur seem more "cool". as a huge fan of the species, videos like this make me so happy to see, i cant wait to see what u do next : )
may i suggest teratophoneus for an upcoming video? i think having a mid sized tyrannosaur on the channel could really add some perspective to what tyrannosaurs were like before the more famous later species came along such as trex or tarbosaurus

Carcharodontosaurus was one of the largest terrestrial predators that has ever lived on the planet. Alongside Tyrannosaurus rex, Spinosaurus and its relative, Giganotosaurus. It lived in North Africa in the countries of Egypt and Morocco, during the Early - Late Cretaceous period, around 95 million years ago. It grew to be about 12 - 13 meters in length, about 3.5 - 3.8 meters tall at the hips, and weighed up to 7 - 9 tons in weight. It was a very large, land-based carnivore, and a cousin of Allosaurus, but four times bigger, with enormous jaws and long, serrated teeth up to eight inches long, but not in the way you might expect. It had a large head and skull, that was relatively weak. And computer analysis has shown that it's unlikely to be strong enough to hold onto struggling prey. It's teeth were thin, like knives, too weak to bite easily through bone. But they were sharp, with deadly serrations, just like a shark's. The very name Carcharodontosaurus means "shark-toothed lizard". We think that it used its skull and teeth to slash deep into the flesh of its prey, which may have consisted of dinosaurs such as young sauropods and ornithopods, causing massive injury and blood loss. It may have opportunistically grouped up or even potentially formed social groups, or packs; just like its other relative, Mapusaurus. It may have also been a scavenger as well as an active predator. Its arms were somewhat short, but still longer than T. rex's and were quite strong. They had three claws on each hand, its arms were likely useless when hunting, but may have been used to assist in mating. Based on Larremendi's bipedal speed formula, it moved around 22-33 kilometers per hour. Like all megatheropods over 3 tonnes, it was physically incapable of reaching a running gait. But we think that it has a hidden advantage. In 2008, detailed bone analysis suggested these dinosaurs employed a system of air sacs. Air sacs are used in breathing. They ensure that oxygen-rich air flows continually through the lungs when breathing in and out. It's a very efficient system, similar to that of birds. It implied that theropod dinosaurs like Carcharodontosaurus were indeed highly-active hunters. And they needed to be. It's reckoned that a dinosaur of this size would need to eat a minimum of 60 kilos of meat every day simply to survive. These breathing techniques also make an ambush predator. Its brain endocast and inner ear anatomy resembled modern crocodilians. The size of the cerebrum relative to the total brain was similar to modern non-avian reptiles, but small relative to coelurosaurian theropods and birds. Ongoing discoveries and research by scientists will certainly shed further light on its physiology, behavior, and environmental circumstances and interactions. It's hunting range, which was mostly made of forests and open plains, may've been up 500 square kilometers. Its environment was likely very warm and humid, with many rivers and lakes flowing through, considering Spinosaurus, who it lived alongside, has been found in the same location, though it rather prefered dense forests and open plains to wetlands consisting of rivers and swamps, which it's rival, Spinosaurus, would've dominated. It would've lived alongside, and preyed upon, herbivores, such as the sauropod, Paralititan, and the sail-backed ornithopod, Ouranosaurus, as well as fellow carnivores, such as the giant 12 meter long crocodilian, Sarcosuchus, and other theropods, Rugops, Deltadromeus and Spinosaurus. From my experience as a child, it is famously known from the Discovery Channel Documentary Series, Dinosaur Planet (2003), from the second episode, Alpha's Egg, where it is incorrectly depicted to live in South America, and the BBC Documentary Series, Planet Dinosaur (2011), from the first and fifth episodes, Lost World and New Giants, where it accurately lives in Africa, and is depicted as an extremely territorial predator, as well as the Anime TV Series, Dinosaur King (2007 - 2009), as Coal, the educational TV show, Dinosaur Train (2009), as the character, Chef Carson, and the Documentary Series, Monsters Resurrected (2009), losing to Spinosaurus. Beyond these, it has also appeared a variety of the Jurassic Movies' video games, such as Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis (2003), Jurassic Park: Builder (2012), Jurassic World: Alive (2018), Jurassic World: Evolution (2018), as a species member of the Cretaceous Dinosaur DLC Pack, and it's sequel, Jurassic World: Evolution 2 (2021), as well as The Isle (2015), Ark: Survival Evolved (2015), Path of Titans (2020) and most recently, Prehistoric Kingdom (2022).
Anyways, it's great to hear from you again, and keep up the good work. Can't wait to see you again for the one of the two famous icons of dinosaurs, Velociraptor.

Just one small correction for to the animals on the species list that you have coexisting with carcharodontosaurus.
Ouranosaurus died out 0.5 - 1 million years before either Carcharodontosaurus or Spinosaurus existed; but it’s such a small time frame, it’s actually forgivable for most inaccuracies in media.
The same cannot be said for Sarcosuchus. This genus died out 13 million years before Spinosaurus or Carcharodontosaurus even existed.
The closest to those two dinosaurs that Sarcosuchus came close to living with are their relatives; the Spinosaur, Suchomimus; & the Carcharodontosaur, Eocarcharia.
I know it’s a popular media trend to have this giant Crocodilomorph fighting against two of the largest carnivores in Africa. But the reality is they’ve never met.
Interestingly, looking into the two genus, it seems that Carcharodontosaurus might’ve died out 0.5 million years before Spinosaurus did. Maybe the change in climate environment hit the more land base carnivore harder than a Spinosaur?
      We may never know.
