About The Carol Burnett Show
While there’s no truth to the rumor that “CBS” ever stood for The Carol Burnett Show, for eleven seasons and 278 episodes, this star-studded extravaganza of sketch comedy, song and dance became entertainment central for the network and TV viewers. Burnett operated in a relaxed theater setting that allowed her to take questions, cut loose with her famous Tarzan yell and join fellow performers Harvey Korman, Tim Conway, Vicki Lawrence and Lyle Waggoner to have a laugh or sing a song. The show received 25 Emmy Awards and eight Golden Globes, making it one of the most honored shows in television history.

I lived as a young adult through the 1970's. I knew of the name "Carol Burnett," and that name registered vaguely with me, associated in the murky back of my mind with the notion of "female television comic." "Female comic?": How could she possibly be funny? (Blatant sexism, of course.) I was too busy being an urban hipster to learn much else about her. Just about a year ago I started finding some of her skits here on YT. As I watched more of her comedy, I became astonished at her ability to create a seemingly endless number of invariably hilarious comic characters - usually accompanied by her matchless crew of Vicki, Lyle, Harvey and Tim, scripted by many of the greatest comic/gag writers who ever wrote for television. I now agree with Beverly Sills - who knew Carol and was friends with her - and with Jerry Lewis, who worked with her - in their opinion that Carol Burnett is a comic genius. I realize that I'm lucky to have grown old, "For Men Improve with the Years" (W.B. Yeats). But the passage of "the Years" can't improve Carol Burnett's talents - for they exist beyond time, in a timeless world of artistic perfection. And that's not extravagant flattery. It's only the truth.

Perfect show
Before Eunice existed, in the 1970s, before 1975, Carol did
several episodes of Zelda, I thought that was her funniest
character; she seemed popular enough, for a time these episodes were shown in reruns; so I recorded what I thought
was the funniest one; when George wanted to be a bullfighter. But this recording is on my audio tape reel only.
Instead of George, Zelda is saying, "Horhay! Horhay!"Could
you play the bullfighter one, someday?
Marshall George isn't the only one with a pair of 38's in Dodge City.

I wish Carol Burnett had not dropped Zelda and George from her repertoire of characters in the latter seasons of her show. Also gone were Gladys Portnoy the Fireside Girl, and the Carol and Sis sketches, the latter being no great loss. I always thought her later characters, such as Mrs. Wiggins and Tim Conway's old man, were labored and unfunny.
Mrs Wiggins is my least favorite. Carol said Zelda was giving her a headache. I miss Alice Portnoy, Carol and Sis (I loved those) Stella and Harry 10th Ave Passion and Charo.
Also, yes on the Conway front. Now I can skip all the old man annoyance as 'comedy' stuff. The only thing I find him tolerable in is The Family sketches. I always found Lyle funnier.
