Companies have assets. Just think you have Rs.1,000,000. If you divide that amount into 100,000 parts, there will be Rs.10 parts 100,000. Like that companies divide their total assets into several parts in order to raise funds for future projects, cash shortages etc. That kind of a segment or a part is known as a share. Only public listed companies (registered under the CSE) are entitled to sell shares to the public. The integrated market which has been created by the CBSL to sell and buy those shares is know as the share market. Primary market is the market which the shares are primarily sold by the companies to the brokers. Secondary market is the market in which the public buys and sells the shares within the stock market. This is the market where we can join with. This share market can also be divided into another 2 segments as bear market and bull market according to the speculation of the people. In bull market, people buy shares with the intention that the share price will grow in future which would come up with future benefits. In bear market the people sell share with the intention that the share price will move down by making a loss for them. Simple bull market people buy share from the bear market people. There are several types of shares as, Ordinary shares redeemable preference shares cumulative preference shares non- cumulative preference shares Participating preference shares convertible preference shares Out of all these, only the ordinary share holders will be considered as the owners of the companies and have the right to participate in AGM.
