    Over the many years I listened to you, I had forgotten how much that your lessons meant to me. I found you and fell in love with the guitar. I'm seventy three now and struggling to still stay alive with compromised health but still have my desire to learn as my hands are all but totally crippled. I have given thought to moving to the slide. I really missed you Justin and think that your probably one of the greatest players in the world.

    I remember when I wanted to learn old man by Neil Young but couldn't figure it out or find any lessons. Justin came out with a lesson on that song and I know the song to this day. He also taught me harvest, needle and the damage done and out on the weekend all while clearly teaching the little nuances Neil Young used in those songs, which were hard to grasp by ear for me at that time.. Getting back into guitar starting with the basics. Thank you Justin!

    I learned to play the A chord the traditional way. A friend of mine who is awesome at guitare showed me the way Justin plays it. Took me about 2 weeks to finally get it, but it's worth it. Transitions are so much easier and its not as crowded in the fret. Well worth the effort to change!

    Thank you so much for all your videos Justin. They're all really helpful. It's been just under two weeks since I first picked up my acoustic guitar. I'm doing OK mastering the CAGED (+AGED minor) chords and trying to strum the G, Em, C, D chord progression as smoothly as possible. This week I have also made a start on bar chords (oddly I've found C minor easier than the F major that everybody says I should start with). Obviously I'm still working on all aforementioned but what is my next step? What goal should I be setting myself next? Ultimately, jazz and R&B is where I want to be but I know that's a long way off. What's the next logical step from what I'm currently doing to get me incrementally closer to where I want to be?

    Just finishing Grade 1 and I have couple of questions.
    1. Do I really need to mute the thickest string in C chord or can I just not play it like in D, A etc.?
    2. You always mentioned that when practicing the 1-minute chord changes, do not to pay attention how clear the chords sound, just concentrate on speed. What if sometimes (in some changes) almost all chord changes sound muted? Still not concentrate on it? When practicing the chord perfect there's no such problem.
    Thanks

    For G without 2nd fretting the A like he shows, I like to show the ‘cheap G’ (sometimes we called this the Neil Young G since it worked for chord changes in his songs, and he may have done it sometimes). Wrap your thumb around to 3rd fret the E and just touch the A the mute it. And wrap your ring finger to 3rd fret the e. This makes for very quick changes between G and D, commonly used together in songs. This G, and the same 2 finger G Justin shows, is less bassy and may marry well with the D chord which uses mainly the highest pitch strings (though you can also wrap your thumb to 2nd fret the F# and the play all strings for D but now I’ve turned this comment into a lesson).

      Go for the full G. A bit more work but use fingers 2 3 4. Not 1 2 3. Worth the effort as later will lead to a stronger 4th finger, and an easy transition to G7. Just lifting the 4th of the G Major Chor and add the 1st on the first fret on fitst E string for a G7 so you don't move 2 +3 fingers. You are then in a convenient finger shape to swap to a C maj chord. A bit more work but worth it in the end!

    Imo the first chords to learn should be Em, Am, C, D, G. If you feel like you're not getting anywhere or practice is too boring, just look up a song and chances are it will have these chords. Learn the progression and have some fun. You can also throw in the F chord for good measure.

    Another stellar lesson / review. Personally the D minor is the most difficult of the 8 chords presented. My current focus is to transition smoothly and cleanly between them. D to A to E is now a piece of cake. The C to G is still a bit of a challenge. I can do it, but not as quickly as my metronome would like 😄. Side note: Im a recent Reddit affecionado, subscribing to several guitar subs. Justin gets a ton of love there. And rightfully so.

    But if you play without the first finger on for the G chord and still pick it then you’re using an A, which means you’re using a flat 7 if you’re using the G in the key of G. But I’m looking at the diagram and seems like he means to not strum the string either. So then he intends to pick string 6 and then strings 4-1? Are there any videos that go over doing this?

    question: if you hit the open e string on purpose when playing the A chord does that make it A/e or dose it not count as a slash chord because e is a note in the A chord?

    • @justinguitar
      @justinguitar  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You clearly understand the concept; you are correct. the e becomes the lowest note, making it an A/E | that one is one of the essential "slash chords" shown in this interesting lesson: www.justinguitar.com/guitar-lessons/essential-slash-chords-bg-1401 | LievenDV | JustinGuitar Official Guide, Approved Teacher & Moderator

  • @wernercolyn892
    @wernercolyn892 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm amazed that you play Dm with the pinky. Why, Justin? I've been playing for years and that's the first time I see the pinky being used 😯

    • @justinguitar
      @justinguitar  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It gets the little finger involved (that's a plus). It can be easier in some chord-change situations. It allows the 3rd finger to be free to fret other strings for added embellishment notes. See Justin's Imagine lesson for an example of this. www.justinguitar.com/songs/john-lennon-imagine-chords-tabs-guitar-lesson-bs-992 About 1 minute along. Cheers 😊

      I get you, but still strange to see it in a Dm. I wish someone told me to keep my pinky close to the fret board when I was learning my open chords out of a book about 20 years ago 🤣
      God, I have tremendous problems even when fingering a simple C7 open chord. It just doesn't wanna go down and it frustrates the living hell out of me. It's also not hand positioning or technique. Same with the Am7 in the open position and those type of shapes. Terrible when you can play and write a bit and you know exactly which chord you wanna use next, but your pinky just doesn't allow you. Cheers.

    Bit confused 🤔. I started learning just by myself, maybe 6 weeks ago. Just a few mins a day when I can. I've never seen a G chord like this. The technique I've seen needs 4 fingers and I struggle to get it without muting strings. Definitely can't transition quickly. I've seen a 3 finger G, too. So is this a proper G? What should I do? I'm nearly 55 so this is all for fun, I'm definitely not planning a gig 😂.
    Id like to keep progressing though. I won a PRS recently so I'd like to make some decent noises 😜

  • @immortalsun

    Hitting the strings that aren’t open, especially with the D chord, is one of the toughest things for me when it comes to strumming. Hopefully I’ll get used to not hitting all the strings when strumming, but it’s hard. And I’m still struggling with the A chord, to be honest. Heck, G is a lot easier than A for me.

  • @KS-tz9sg

    For C and B7 chords my fat middle finger always end up muting the 4th string, is there a fix to this?

    • @justinguitar
      @justinguitar  ปีที่แล้ว

      A common issue for people just starting out with their first chords. It can occur due to pressing down too hard. That may be a symptom of nut slots cut too high which is something a guitar tech can look at and fix. It is also an issue that eases when harder callouses form so the flesh spreads out less.

    Don't agree with G chord shape better use fingers 2 3 +4. Yes, a bit if a stretch agreed, but assists with strengthening the 4th finger. Also one only has to transfer to 1st finger on F and the lifting of the 4th on the G note for the G7. maintaining the 2nd and 3rd fingers.

      Using that fingering allows you to have a free 3rd finger which is really useful when it comes to doing bass runs or adding embellishments on the A string especially. Many people move to this as a preferred fingering over time. | close 2u | JustinGuitar Official Guide

    Wtf is this for a D minor, you were teaching that chord the other way (without little finger) 11 years ago, and im following that begginers course. This way even looks harder. Btw C is worst, im having most problems with it
