This video is fantastic! I'm not a newbie by any stretch but I've mostly been playing fingerstyle and can have limited experience with pure strumming. This has really helped me understand it better.
I have to concur. Not a newbie but I play a modified accoustic finger style and I really don't do much in the way of straight strumming. Of course that shows up when I try to do any straight up 12 bar blues. In that case you have to be like a machine... I will try your method. I particularly like your comments about can you have a conversation while your being your own metronome...
Finally! 40 year old beginner, massively struggling with strumming. I've been searching for instructional videos for a year, and THIS is what I needed. Cheers Justin
I'm 55 years old just starting this beautiful hobby and joyful instrument the guitar I'm just kind figure out the basic cords but I think putting together the cords and the strumming I will find the fun part and keep learning because so far I still can not find the flavor of music
@Vishal Srivastav can you share the recipe o way like I said before I'm already know all mayor cords miners but still I can't find the sense of music or rhitm I think when I be able to hear that I be able to enjoy the resl real God bless
@Vishal Srivastav thank you very much for your input I will said this a mistake that many of us make because a private teacher cost about 50 one hour but I guess it is worth it to try
A good sense of rhythm and strumming is often the last physical part of playing that players develop, it is also the most difficult to teach. Justin's patient style and perfectly paced lessons are the best I have seen on the internet. I would recommend him to any beginner or intermediate. I have taught part time for many decades but even I learn new ways of teaching certain musical concepts by watching his vids. Guitar can seem extremely difficult at first, your fingers don't want of make the what seems like pretzel shapes, your fingers get sore, and it seems like you have no coordination, it get much easier in time. For those who have been going at it for a few months I offer congratulations, you have gotten past the two month hump which has a 70% attrition rate. Playing will start to become rewarding and lots of fun soon. Good luck to all.
Heheheheh "passing 2 months" is underestimating my willpower. I wont be satisfied until i can play any fingerstyle song that i like. Still only 4 months rn, but im sure i can last until that time comes.
@@hisyamhasbi8257 I’m 2 months in right now. It’s crazy to think you wrote this while you were still only 4 months in and now can probably play your favorite songs by now. Maybe someone learning will see my comment a year from now and think the same thing about my comment.
Thanks Justin, i learned the way to make lot of different rhythms just move u and d, but please tell me how to know which rhythm i will used to play for every the song when look at the sheet music?
i cant imagine how i came so ignorant of strumming and just after this video i could generate hundreds of strumming patterns, its taken me almost 3 hours learning a 16 minute video, but it was worth it. thanks my friend, i am sending you tonnes of beautiful energy for this precious knowledge and skill, be blessed
Really a good simple, understandable lesson. I am 73 and a beginner, but this makes Good Sense. Now I will continue to work hard and practice. Thanks for all you do Justin.
When I started playing guitar my strumming was on point naturally, I didn’t struggle with my right hand and my rhythm at all. I took a break from playing and now that I’m back I’m really struggling with my strumming. But since I know everything takes time I’ll practice and hopefully It’ll get as smooth and natural as before.
Ravi Iyer - India, Nasik. Age 62, was really choking with the strumming, but your video was so easy & helpful. I have grasped the ideas you have told, and will work on my guitar. Thanks as lot Justin sir. You are great and i feel God has sent you to help me.
It makes me feel a bit better to know that a lot of people believe that strumming is the hardest part of learning guitar. I might've hit my first learning wall after 2 months of smooth sailing so far.
Hey everyone - lot of you digging this lesson :) Thanks! But did you know I just released an updated and improved super HD version of my beginner course - and it's still free :) Just go to www.justinguitar.com/begin - as well as the lessons, I learned to play left handed using my own course, and filmed my journey, so you can watch me struggle along with you! I really hope it's the best beginner guitar course that's ever been made, and it's free (but I do appreciate donations if you enjoy it and can afford to!). Go check it out, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain!
It's over! Long years of confusion questioning whether strumming rythm is only an innate talent and can't be easily mastered. Thank you Justin, that's brilliant!!! Clear speech, great hints and reason, positive and relaxed approach.
Finally found a tutor who speaks to me, as a total novice. Many thanks for this Justin - this is huge for me as most other videos have overwhelmed me. One more subscriber for you.
Thank you, Justin. I've been taking your on-line lessons for years now, and this lesson helped me immensely. Again, thank you, and thanks for all you do, especially for us older (74) guitar hacks who play for fun, and keeping the "oldtimers" diseases at bay! Cheers! :)
I’ve been trying to learn guitar on and off over the past thirty years. I can read music, tabs, I know the basic open and barre chords, I know scales, etc. I’ve never been able to figure out how to make anything sound right, it’s all about strumming patterns. This video is an eye opener for me. (I haven’t been trying this solidly for thirty years, more of a start/stop thing, gone through something like six guitars in the process and took only one lesson that I hated).
I'm a 59 yr old beginner and this lesson really made sense to me. Gave me some ideas for some patterns. My Father played Rythem guitar in a band for over 40 years and he was my inspiration to try and learn rhythm guitar. He is in his 80's now and cannot really play anymore. But he still has the capability of teaching me some chords so combining that with this video and strumming patterns has helped me expand my strumming technique and the great sound I am getting now! I only get up to visit him every other month or so, so when I go visit this next time there will be a noticeable change in my playing and I know that will excite him. Thank you for these video's. I am quite sure most beginners get a lot from how you present your information. Its definitely easy to follow.
Thanks for this lesson! Was super helpful! Could you also talk about a couple of simple songs where some of the most common strumming patterns are used? How to identify the strumming pattern by just listening to a simple song, how many beats are in the song and how to play the pattern along with the song? Gaining that knowledge will be really helpful for us to expand our strumming horizons. Thanks again!
Hi Justin I'm 53 total beginner never played acoustic guitar can't read music I'm definitely going to learn the guitar 100% love the video clearly explained gonna try this tomorrow thank you again from manea England uk 🇬🇧 👋
Hey Justin, thanks for this, and for all the lessons you've put together. I've been on the cusp of learning guitar for decades, and never really found a set of instructions (or a teacher) that made much sense for me. I discovered you a few weeks ago after deciding once again that I would give it a try. Your beginner lesson series is an amazing set of work. I know enough that I've been able to skip ahead just a little bit, but your practice tips for even the module 1 and 2 lessons are very helpful to me. I never really learned strumming patterns, and I get thrown off very easily. Your methods are working for me, and even though I make tons of mistakes, I feel like I'm making some progress. Many thanks!
After trying to learn guitar for a few years and not getting very far, I decided to go back to the beginning and go through your lessons from the start and focus on rhythm guitar. This video has just come along at the perfect time. I was beginning to despair. But after watching this video, I feel like I suddenly get what's going on with strumming! Thank you!
Justin, you are a great teacher. The way you taught us it's really amazing very helpful. Was struggling a lot but now following you I'm quite good. Thanks a lot.
I learned how to play the guitar 30yrs ago, unfortunately I stopped due to my fingertips were hurting badly so I quit. I’ve always wanted to go back and learn as my background is all about music singing etc. I finally got back to it and I am ready to give it my all. Last two weeks ago before I started guitar lessons, I researched a few guitar lessons for beginners and came across Justin’s TH-cam all about guitars, learning etc…and I’m so glad I found this clip which is so helpful. I alternate my my face-to-face lesson with my music teacher and Justin’s online lesson and it is so awesome! Thank you so much Justin for sharing your passion and helping people to achieve their goal in music industry. You are a real gem. Your videos and lessons are awesome. As a beginner, I actually learn a lot from you and I really do enjoy playing guitar. Massive thumbs up!!!

Awesome vid about strumming patterns! Would it also possible for you to do an in depth video on how to get the best sound while strumming? I find it quite hard to get a consistent smooth/soft sound out of the guitar. Pick often hangs on the higher notes. Or I’m missing strings. It’s all about being subtle and I’m far from that :) It would be interesting to get tips on the differences of the picks, how to hold them and even on how to properly strum without a pick. Finally, what’s the guitar you use? Thanks for everything Justin!
Hello Justin. I’ve been laying for 14 years, but I would say that perhaps the most important AND most overlooked aspect of my, (and most) players playing is strumming/ rhythm. I think many players that have been playing for a while think that they shouldn’t watch a lesson meant for beginners, but I completely disagree! By slowing down and looking/listening closer to my strumming and rhythm, this is helping me to get better with my overall playing after all these years!

Yea me too. Been playing over a year strumming is my problem. I'm going to try what Justin just taught me. I'm all in on the guitar, get up a hour early to practice and stay up a hour late each day. Justin is really the inspirational part of me wanting to learn. Well here goes the lesson. Thank you Justin. Really!
I’m just starting to work on strumming and having trouble with up strums. Could someone please tell me what strings you catch on the up strum. I’m pretty sure it’s not all of them - sounds funny.
Thanks so much Justin, I started my guitar playing in life with mostly finger picking or i used to call it plucking and I think I got so good with it and I realized my strumming is not so good. Thanks so much for your strumming lessons. Do appreciate it!
I looked at so many vids on strumming, came across yours and needless to say this one is by far the most informative and helpful...now i have a greater understanding of music theory. You are an excellent teacher. Thank you...l can't wait to view your other vidoes.
I took up learning at the tender age of 60 and struggled with strumming. However this is a Eureka moment. I have spent the last few days going from A to E to D using variation of this and, dare I say it, "I get it and understand" Cheers mate
What a great lesson. Could you do something on this line for specific styles of rhythm? Funk/reggae/odd time patterns/all things Wilko? My rhythm playing has never been anywhere near the standard I'd like. Like most, I've spent too much time furiously wanking rather than having a strum :)
What happens when you have to change chords really quickly in a song. That is when you don't get the chance to do a 1+2+3+4.That is when things get difficult!
Practice, practice, practice...it's the only way your mind will make your muscles repeat the same patterns consistently. Doesn't matter if it's music, tennis or boxing.
Not sure I can verbalize this but I always thought that each time I saw a chord over the words I needed to strum the necessary beats (4/4, 2/4 etc.) and was always hurrying to get the beats in before the next chord. Sounded weird too. However, I watched another player and in some songs several chords make up one bar so you don’t play the chord with the 4 strumming pattern but the base note then move to the next chord until you have the 4 beats within that bar. May be two strums for a chord then 2 strums for another chord to make up the 4 beats. It’s hard for us beginners to figure out a bar when it’s just words on a paper with chord letters above. Sheet music will tell you the beginning and end of the bar. That realization was an eye opener for me.
I got to give you credit you really have a great way of simplifying and breaking it down the explanations. I have been playing almost 30 years and i teach guitar & ukulele but i have never been any good at explaining strumming patterns to kids. I have always just been able to do it find the rhythm and play it. So i always made the kids find the rhythm and play it slow because i could never explain it in a way they understood. This really helped my students thank you!
Brilliant! As a bass player trying to learn guitar, strumming has baffled me. My left hand is coming around reasonably quickly, but the right is lost and this helps immensely. Thank-you.....
I love practicing my strumming patterns while practicing chord switches with new chords at the same time . 2 birds with one stone and gives me a better ear for the chords :)
I am an extremely impatient person who gets discouraged easily and I just bought my first guitar. I am in no way musical whatsoever and I’ve been getting really frustrated with strumming. I’ve watched so many videos but this is the only one that has helped me.
Justin, you do a great presentation on all of your lessons. I appreciate your kind demeanor and excellent methods in which you share your knowledge. Thank you for sharing !!

Justin, what a great and overlooked topic. Been playing just a few years, and between songs, chords, scales, alternate picking etc, completely forgot about learning basic rhythm. Thanks!

What a great lesson. Could you do something on this line for specific styles of rhythm? Funk/reggae/odd time patterns/all things Wilko? My rhythm playing has never been anywhere near the standard I'd like. Like most, I've spent too much time furiously wanking rather than having a strum :)
Ok I'm learning the mandolin and I love this video. Your voice is pleasing.
I think we are supposed to continue on with the pattern despite chord changes.
That realization was an eye opener for me.
you can do an open strings strum before the chord change while moving your hand to he new chord. Kurt Cobain did that, also it sounds good
Sometimes you can let off a note, and still strum between changing notes if you don’t take too long lol
This helped me much more than i expected !! Thank you !!
Really great stuff Justin..how doI donate? Thanks from Maine..
You're brilliant Justin...thanks for your artistry!
Ah. Where were these teachers 40 yrs ago? Good stuff Justin. I've got plenty more years to rock out. Thanks for getting me there...finally :D
Where were we 40 years ago? Beiong born... and then learning our shit! :)
Unfortunately, youtube did not exist.😁
I'm having more trouble with chord changes and finger placement so it sounds good rather than rhythm. Rhythm comes quite naturally
Different players, different struggles! Keep working on anchor finger, one minute changes - it gets better! ;)
Justin Guitar ! I'm so psyched to find you again! Your website was a daily habit about half a decade ago. Thank you for your work !
Justin, fantastic thank you. I just need the practice, my hand wants to stop moving on those missing strums....
Loving the nod to his older videos with the blue and brown throw on his seat. Absolute legend!
Such a good teacher, and bloke. Thank you so much, Justin. Come for a pint sometime on the N. Norfolk coast ! Just love a thinking communicator !…
Thanks Iain Cheers 😊

Justin - Greetings from San Francisco, USA! You are so beyond awesome! THANK you so much for giving us a treasure trove of material to help us learn to become better guitarists.
Very cool 😎 Justin. I’m 65 and have not played the guitar for 30 plus years because I couldn’t strum in time or with natural feel.
A dear friend has given me an acoustic guitar and you have turned the lights on. Wow.
My deepest thanks. Kind regards Pete.
Just want to thank you for your videos, having lots of fun learning to play my guitar.

By far the best beginners lesson I have watched Justin. Thanks mate. Now I have something to really work on as my left hand callouses develop.
Thanks one of the best strumming videos I’ve seen
Hey Justin! Thanks for simplifying this strumming guitar exercise. Your lesson makes it alot easier to learn guitar strumming.
a simple but great idea .same applies for making up drum beats (bass drum for down strums & snare for up strums)
Playing 57 years and this really is useful!
Justin, what a great and overlooked topic. Been playing just a few years, and between songs, chords, scales, alternate picking etc, completely forgot about learning basic rhythm. Thanks!
I have been a self learner and been struggling with strumming since long.. But this is just so helpful.
He’s so good and connects perfectly.
Thank you Jason. These Exercises help me a lot.
I can say...........PERFECT !!!!!!!!!!!
