Michel Foucault's Discipline and Punish is challenging. Here is a summary of the first part of the book. Foucault makes an important argument in Discipline and Punish. He gives us two main insights at the beginning of Discipline and Punish: first, that modes of punishment change throughout history, and second, that studying criminal justice can teach us about power formations. Discipline and Punish evidences Foucault's central concern with the relationship between power and knowledge. It is through scenes of punishment and spaces of discipline, Foucault argues, where power formations are constituted and delineated.
