I directed many episodes of the Power Rangers series. All of the monster suits were made in Japan. They were all foam built up on wet suits, which gave them a stiff structure underneath.
Phenomenal job! 7 years gone by yet this is the most straightforward, uncomplicated tutorial I've found. THIS is the one I will be playing while making my muscle suit...thanks for posting.
Normally water based clay is what I use but the Zombie in the back ground is monster clay. Monster clay is an ol based clay that I use when I know that I wont be able to mold a sculpt quickly.
I really appreciate that you share what your materials are: as a Home Haunter I want to keep my costs down but I also don't want to waste my time or money using products that won't last.
yes on the clay, and a moderate yes on the mold builder. it can be used, but there most latex for mask making has a lower ammonia content and is a better value. just buy a gallon from frightprops or screamline studios.
Ok Update, I made a body suit using parts of this tutorial. Since I wasn't using fur to hide the seams I opted to make a muscle suit to go under the body suit. I found that this worked great and the spandex over layer smoothed out any jagged edges I had from carving the foam. The only issue I had was the rubber cement. I used Tandy's because we had a location near my house, The foam adhered well to it's self but not to the spandex, It peeled right off, I suggest gluing the the foam down and then using a whipstitch to keep it on the body suit. Overall it was a great tutorial, It helped me have a jumping off point.
i know this comment is 4 years old, but if anyone comes across this like i did today [it's great!] when i was in school for animation and we made stop motion puppets with foam we used barge cement which is really great!
I'm working on a Pumpkinhead costume and this technique will save me a ton of headache and money on a full latex cast. I come to your vids for the most economical way for great effects. Thanks for your uploads.
Every time I watch one of your videos I go back to the quote you sent to me. "From one thing know ten thousand things" I have wanted to make a skeleton suit and this foam method should work wonderfully. Thanks for making the videos and sharing your talent. A great inspiration.
Thanks for the video! I have to make muscles for my son to wear beneath his theater costume. I won't have to add all the detail you did, but the muscle-making was very helpful!
Once again, awesome video. Easy, quick, and a heck of a lot cheaper than the $150 for store bought. Even starting at square one and buying everything the cost is cheaper and you could make five or more to boot.
another good way of hiding the seems, is by applying another spandex suit over top of the first with foam muscles... of course attach them together... but it works well
Im glad you like the video! I also lovemy job-sometimes, even this seemsa bit like work. Repetition kills me, right now Im making dozens of clown dolls- but I know new stuff is right around the bend.
Great video. This is the only detailed instructional video I've been able to find and it's just fantastic. You weren't kidding about those razor blades either. Best razors ever for cutting and shaping foam. Thank you for the great videos and information.
yeah that would hold them in a bit better. Prevent them from getting loose as the weekend progresses. IM also going to be working on a Quad suit stilt beast as well for the show. I made one last year and it turned out great so I got to go bigger this year.
I have to admit that i was a little bit sceptical at first, cause i have seen many videos where people just glueing foampieces together and pretend like this makes a monster suit but i have to say that your work is pretty awesome. I can't wait to see some more.
How bad is it, heat-wise, wearing one of these? I'm getting some ideas, but don't wannna overheat my bandmates on stage, always a fear. As always, thanks. Our stage/ costuming have improved a hundred fold since I found your videos.
Oh my god you make everything look so easy that is amazing I'm at a loss for words !! I'm going to try to make my own costume for sure i have no excuses now !!!
I Just came across your channel and I love your work, I would love to do this kind of stuff but am sadly not as artistic or as ive realized, creative, but i'm learning a lot of tricks, thanks for the videos keep it up.
coooool! ive always wanted to make something similar, was really awesome to see the picture of you and jordu together! cant believe you keep coming up with such new and original stuff! thanks so very much for sharing ! Its incredible to witness your amazing journey in Art!
Great vid! I'll most likely be going for this method. Hubby is such a big baby. He has been a comic style Batman for the last two years in a row, going on a third coming this next month. Only problem, he has now been out of the Marines for a few years now and he's feeling kinda squishy these days lol. Runner's figure... and he feels squishy... I won't get started lol. So anyway, a little puppy eyes, a little lower lip quiver, and here I am! He wants a little more Keaton and a little less West.
im learning so much from you. i would really like to make a hobby out of making things like this as i alway found it more fun making something people like rather than buying it as it doesnt have meaning to me other than what it is.
I'm really enjoying your instructional videos! Lots of cool low-tech ideas. But as a fellow Artist who does the same kind of work professionally, i gotta say this. PLEASE people, when you do this kind of stuff, wear a respirator and eye protection. I realize you can't instruct your viewers with the proper protection on, but they really need to know how important it is to play safe. I would never use spray 77, microballons, spray paint, naptha, acetone, fiberglass resin, or air brush without a respirator. Even when I mix plaster or sculpt foam, I wear a bandanna around my face. Don't forget there's kids out there learning from you. They need to know how important basic safety is. End of safety lecture. ;) Keep the great work coming!. The Kraumpus video was awesome.
Golgotha_Mythos69 You are very right- It eats a ton of time to go over all the safety stuff I should go over due to all the stuff I use. Perhaps I could do a safety video and reference it in every new video...hmmm.
StiltbeastStudios That's a good idea! I would also add that lots of folks (us men especially) have an aversion to all things safety related. Maybe it's a macho thing. However, my uncle, who was a pro carpenter all his life, died because of this(lung cancer). Like many macho men, he didn't believe in protection. Maybe it was a generational thing, but I've seen lots of guys younger than me acting the same way at various shops I've worked at. Some using hot knives on Styrofoam while just breathing it right in. Some even grinding METAL without glasses on! Just remind folks there's nothing "macho" about ignoring safety. Trust me, I've taken unnecessary risks as well sometimes.
This is super cool!! Ever since my dad threw me into Gwar hell, I've been really curious about how the costumes are made, and how I could maybe make my own lmao
I dont know if this is original or not, it is a different application of a technique I learnedfrom a fabricator. Foam fabrication is very much its own art and their techniques are rarely shared.
Cant wait to get off work and go home and.. work, but on my suit. Im having issues with the the area underneath pecs and the ribs. I might go simple on the ribs like you did here.
ya they are definitely not for things hanging... i wasn't sure if you've used them or not, i never knew about them until more recently.. just thought i'd say something just in case
I wonder if you could use silicone (caulking) instead of rubber cement ? I've used it to adhere fabrics together, just never tried it on foam. Great tutorial !
Amazing video. Me n my friend r trying to make a super hero body suit with this tutorial. But we r having trouble with the shoulders n biceps...cant get them to fit right or for the actor to move right...could u do an arm muscle foam vid??
Yes, I always hope people see past the specific thing I am a making and get the technique and see its applications. Im shooting for how to fish-not catching a fish.
Well, consider it idea suggestions. These aren't things I need. Just curious about how it could be done. If any part of what I asked could be useful in a project you need done, just letting you know someone is interested in what you come up with. Awesome videos. I enjoy them a lot. Especially like the text comments you add in post.
GREAT tutorial I'm gonna use it when I do my son's SPAWN cosplay costume and MY KILLER CROC one.....question; For the HUGE shoulder muscles that KILLER CROC has what would you suggest I do for them....?? :)
Don't take this the wrong way, but I'm so happy you didn't record the scond coat. I already have trouble sleeping. :P In all honesty, I love these videos and you give me so much inspiration. A simple "Like" feels like too small a gesture. :)
Great video. I love that you said where you got the materials and approximate cost. Foamart.com seems to be dead, though, so any foam supplier recommendations would be great. And the latex sprayer thing! Thanks for the fan stand tip, too!
Hey man just wanted to say thanks for sharing your time and knowledge with all of us i am really great full for your videos they help me do things with my imagination that i have always wanted to do great videos keep up the phenomenal work
I love the techniques in this video! I have been shaping 1 inch foam with a blade, sticking it to the body suite. Then when I brush on the latex I used cotton to fill in gaps between the foam. It works great for monsters but I am planing something more human. So I need to have the muscles seamless. I tried foamart.com and it is no longer up. I went to amazon.com and found a site that has 1/4th foam. I was wondering if 1/4th of an inch foam would work as good as 1/8th. Just slightly larger.
I've been watching alot of ur videos I lovem there far better than anyone else s I have a question tho where did u bye the body suit to get started on it I'm trying to make a werewolf body and any suggestions I would love thank you
Not only have you have some great technics, but you have a really good sense of humor as well. Thank you.
I directed many episodes of the Power Rangers series. All of the monster suits were made in Japan. They were all foam built up on wet suits, which gave them a stiff structure underneath.
When it comes to Halloween...what don't you know? So many uses for this technique. Thanks for spending your time showing others how easy it can be.
Phenomenal job! 7 years gone by yet this is the most straightforward, uncomplicated tutorial I've found. THIS is the one I will be playing while making my muscle suit...thanks for posting.
good luck with your suit!
A water based clay sculpt is fine for a few days if you mist it with water and cover it with a plastic bag. water does not helpmuch once it dries out
I do use them and they are great for things that are flat on tables, but not so good at things that are hanging or need to be cut verticially.
Yeah! Im glad you see multiple uses from one technique-that is actually a life skill.
yes on the clay, and a moderate yes on the mold builder. it can be used, but there most latex for mask making has a lower ammonia content and is a better value. just buy a gallon from frightprops or screamline studios.

@@smoage And 2 years later your comment helps me! Thanks.
Yes, the same procedure, just follow the main muscles in the arms. And yes you can buy them in any beauty supply store and you can find them online.
yes you can latex it, but the foam will stay in there as part of the costume.
I'm working on a Pumpkinhead costume and this technique will save me a ton of headache and money on a full latex cast. I come to your vids for the most economical way for great effects. Thanks for your uploads.
My first foam costume is a bulky, misshapen disaster. I'll be using your method for the second iteration. Awesome tips!!!
Every time I watch one of your videos I go back to the quote you sent to me.
"From one thing know ten thousand things"
I have wanted to make a skeleton suit and this foam method should work wonderfully.
Thanks for making the videos and sharing your talent. A great inspiration.
I think it would be fine for that, Maybe some hot glue to make a bit of a disc behind the foam to help hold the nails a bit better.
love your running commentary on these, this was a great project to watch
+Jarons20 thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Im glad if I can help. Im trying to build a good resource library for haunted house prop building and costuming.
you dont needalink, its any 1/2" upholstery foam. there are lots of places to get it.
a mix of latex and cabosil or a thickened latex called zombie flesh works great.
Thanks for the video! I have to make muscles for my son to wear beneath his theater costume. I won't have to add all the detail you did, but the muscle-making was very helpful!
+drmomlms very cool, glad it will work for you.
Thanks, I think it will be a good suit when it is finished.
Once again, awesome video. Easy, quick, and a heck of a lot cheaper than the $150 for store bought. Even starting at square one and buying everything the cost is cheaper and you could make five or more to boot.
the site is up. click the link I added in the videos description. get the 1/8th inch
yeah this style of costume can be pretty useful and cost effective.
the technique has a ton of applications!
another good way of hiding the seems, is by applying another spandex suit over top of the first with foam muscles... of course attach them together... but it works well
Im glad you like the video! I also lovemy job-sometimes, even this seemsa bit like work. Repetition kills me, right now Im making dozens of clown dolls- but I know new stuff is right around the bend.
Not only do I learn from you, but your commentary tracks on the bottom always crack me up!!!
they are stupid sharp. I can drop leather lace onto the blade from 6" up and it cuts it cleanly in half....scary sharp.
Thanks, Im glad you like the channel!
The ones from harbor freight are ok, I used them for years. I have since moved on- but they did fine by me till I needed better.
Yeah, that should work great, you might want to use hot glue in order to make a disc on the back side of the foam to help hold them in a bit.
That turned out pretty darn good! You can go a lot of directions with that.
I made one last year and it turned out great so I got to go bigger this year.
yeah I love them also,I use mine mostly for fabric and leather.
I have to admit that i was a little bit sceptical at first, cause i have seen many videos where people just glueing foampieces together and pretend like this makes a monster suit but i have to say that your work is pretty awesome. I can't wait to see some more.

More like a dremel, yes it can. I just went with the blade. I think a belt sander is a good option as well.
Good to see you, glad you like the video!
Thank you sir! you can make a ton of things with this skill set.
look at the description of the video- the link info has been there from the beginning ;)
I have one of those ZIPSNip tools and it works great on cutting foam.
But man those razors you have are sharp.
Great tutorial! I'm going to have to do a few of these for my superhero costumes.
it is in the video description, the exact address.
Thank you, I hope you can use the info some time.
Awesome! I am happy to help! keep me posted on the werewolf suit!
so far it is just sculpting the mask and making the chest. That costume is on a hiatus as I have other pressing projecs.
No problem! happy to help.
This will make for a nice werewolf costume for an indie production I'm involved with. Thanks a lot for sharing your tips!
Oh my god you make everything look so easy that is amazing I'm at a loss for words !! I'm going to try to make my own costume for sure i have no excuses now !!!
It might work, but I think it would take longer to cure.
contact cement is pretty forgiving it sticks to most things.
I Just came across your channel and I love your work, I would love to do this kind of stuff but am sadly not as artistic or as ive realized, creative, but i'm learning a lot of tricks, thanks for the videos keep it up.
Thank you, did you say hi?
I love you tube Wednesday. Thanks for sharing with us home haunters. Keep up the good work

Im glad you like the videos, keep liking the videos and share them if it makes sense that is how we reach new people. I really appreciate the support!

This is really great. This help me solve a problem I was having for a short film I'm making. Thanks so much for posting this..
its hot no doubt. but I dount do full bodies, just plates so there are thin lycra spots that they can breathe through.
I dont know if this is original or not, it is a different application of a technique I learnedfrom a fabricator. Foam fabrication is very much its own art and their techniques are rarely shared.
No excuses! Make stuff!
Thanks for sharing! The tongue depressor trick was great.
Works well for me!
on which part of the costume?
Cant wait to get off work and go home and.. work, but on my suit. Im having issues with the the area underneath pecs and the ribs. I might go simple on the ribs like you did here.
The mask, the hand extension vid and this vid helped with the body
ya they are definitely not for things hanging... i wasn't sure if you've used them or not, i never knew about them until more recently.. just thought i'd say something just in case
glad you like them, thanks for watching!
Thanks so much! I'm going to use this method to try and make a tmnt donatello costume for halloween!
Amazing tutorial, man.. Excellent work 👍👍👍👍👍
look at the videos description Mike- the link is there
Everything you make looks amazing. I love your channel.
I wonder if you could use silicone (caulking) instead of rubber cement ? I've used it to adhere fabrics together, just never tried it on foam. Great tutorial !
What video? I subscribe to that- is there a foam costume tutorial?
thanks
Thanks for this useful Tut. I'm hoping to make a muscle suit for a superhero-cosplay
+Stein Rimbaut this will work great for that,, let me know how it turns out!
Amazing video. Me n my friend r trying to make a super hero body suit with this tutorial. But we r having trouble with the shoulders n biceps...cant get them to fit right or for the actor to move right...could u do an arm muscle foam vid??
