    I spent about 6 months sleeping right behind two small Detroit Diesels, each one had 16 cylinders that produced 100 HP per cylinder and purred like, well like a Detroit in a strain. The whine of 8 super chargers coupled with that and a Cat powered generator to power all the electric a 165ft long, 35 foot wide tow boat with sleeping quarters for 10 crew and up to 4 guests, fuel tanks, fresh potable and non potable water and grey and black water tanks and all the gear necessary to cable together up to 20 or so barges about 200'x35' with 9 feet of draft. You could not sleep if the engines had to be turned off. The soft purring of 3200 horsepower of Detroit Diesel would soon have you sleeping like a baby being rocked by its mother. Take that you Cumminsnists.

      Worked on a tug with 2 12-71 TT’s, 3-71 Gens breaking ice one winter. Engines start @ 04:30 to make the first run, and clean out the slips.
      As the season turned, late February early March, small leads would open up in the river, and by 10:00, and the bright winter sun, you’d run
      down the leads to get a break from augering your way over lumps of ice the size of fridges and stoves. After running in the ice free water for
      a few minutes you’d catch yourself falling asleep on your feet at the wheel. Believe me, that wouldn’t last long, cause you’d be banging and
      crashing about in the ice soon enough.

    Cummins is an AMERICAN multinational corporation that designs, manufactures, and distributes engines, filtration, and power generation products. They are assembled in many countries around the world, but are MADE in the USA. The headquarters is in Columbus Indiana. The company was founded by American, Clessie Lyle Cummins in 1919. Some Cummins' engines were assembled in Shotts Scotland for approximately 30 years from the mid '60's until 1996 when the assembly plant was closed.

      I believe they were also manufactured in Japan, NH 4’s for Komatsu. Nice smooth block casting, with yellow paint ? Inside crankcase. When I
      worked for Cummins Ontario in the early - mid 70’s a lot of 1940’s engines built in Scotland came through for rebuilding. Mostly gen set, tugboat
      engines ( Russel Hipwell, Owensound Ontario ) from logging, and mining operations in Northern Ontario. I had Cummins 350 and 400 in my trucks,
      but Detroit in the tug. Cheap to run, and lots of parts available back in the day. 71 series. Very quiet on deck if you installed Mac Whisper noise
      cancelling silencers installed. Manufactured in Langley British Columbia. They looked like a beer keg. You could get them on 149 series Detroits.

    Detroit hands down at the top . In the U.S. Navy Seabees I was a heavy equipment mechanic and Fell in love with Detroit right away . Even replaced the Cummins ( Ran just fine ) With a Detroit when I got out of the military and bought my first semi truck . LOL Sold the Cummins to a nonbeliever . LOL

    Very funny video, I love the banter with you two but you both have it wrong the best marine diesels are yellow and have CAT written on them. Keep up the awesome work!

    • @DangarMarine

      Does it matter if it is a CAT or can I just paint it yellow and write CAT on it? ;)

    It must be said, here is a motor that went to war and 70 years later is still going strong. There wouldn’t be so much support if it wasn’t a great design!

    • @grancito2
      @grancito2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is fuel uneconomical, but they were designed to all have most of the same parts, regardless of the number of cylinders, so they were great for the war effort, no massive enventry for each engine.

    • @popuptoaster
      @popuptoaster 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@grancito2 Same with my Gardner engine, modular and designed in the late 20's built almost unchanged right up top the 80's when they were killed off by emissions legislation.

    Funny stuff! Detroit diesels are the best marine diesels. They are the best stationary engines for compressors, generators, pumps etc. Cummins is the best industrial engine. I am referring to the two stroke Detroit, and the Cummins PT fuel injected engines. Each has the perfect fit in the diesel engine world.

  • @joshuafurborough811
    @joshuafurborough811 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Detroit diesels are a smaller version of emd engine that are in locomotives indestructible the design is nearly a 100 years old bloody fantastic

    What on earth is Damo Raving About, Cummins is American
    From Wiki:
    The Cummins Engine Company was founded in Columbus, Indiana on February 3, 1919 by J Irwin Miller, a banker, and Clessie Cummins, a local mechanic. It focused on developing the diesel engine invented 20 years earlier, but in spite of several well publicized endurance trials, it was not until 1933 that their Model H, used in small railroad switchers, proved successful.[9][10][11] The Cummins N Series engines became the industry leader in the post-World War II road building boom in the United States

    That's funny. The one advantage with the older Cummins is you can rebuild them on the side of road because of the 3 head design. Just determine which cylinder is bad pop that head off and replace it. But if I had to choose I would run a Detroit over a Cummins.

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The three head design is pretty cool I will admit.
