Great group! The Statler Brothers were a country music, gospel vocal group formed back in 1955. They also sang as opening act & backup singers for Johnny Cash from 1964-72. Their 2 best known songs are "Flowers On The Wall" & "Bed Of Rose's". Other songs are "Do You Know You Are My Sunshine?", "Elizabeth", "My Only Love", "Too Much On My Heart etc.

Harold Reid (bass) Don Reid (lead) were the brothers. Lew DeWitt had the most distinctive voice on those high harmonies and rare to see him without playing a guitar in a performance. Phil (sorry can't remember his last name) rounded out this fantastic quartet. Great song. Oh, and theybchose the name Statler from a box of Statler tissues in the record companies office.

The Statler Brothers were formed in Staunton , Virginia . From 1964 until 1972 they opened up for Johnny Cash and also were back up singers for him . Johnny was a mentor to them and gave them their big break . They wrote and sang a tribute song to Johnny Cash for being their mentor called “We got paid by Cash “ . I grew up in Virginia and saw the Statler Brothers live quite a few times with my parents . The Statler Brothers always put on a great live show .

And as for a Harri, he’s too young even for that …..

I grew up singing the Statlers around the family piano and when my beloved mother who taught us that all songs are love songs passed away, we played the beautiful, slowed down cover of this song by Kelly Hogan at her grave side. Check her version out. In the entire Statler catalog there is only one bad song and that is 'New York City', it's a coward's ballad and I'd love to hear your take on it. Thanks for all you do, including bringing these voices to a new generation.

Hey Harri, love your channel. And I want to answer your question about the Statler Brothers. The lead singer and the bass singer ARE brothers. If you really look at them you can see their resemblance. Research them and see how many awards they won back in the day. Love your show 😊

The bass singer and the main singer are brothers or cousins. Was blessed to see them live in a smaller place. Rip Harold. Cant go wrong.

These guys are from my dad's hometown of Staunton, Virginia, USA. I play bass and have sat in with Jimmy Fortune who was with the group a little later.

Bass and lead are actually brothers. Other two. Are life long friends.
In days gone by they opened for Johnny Cash.

The Statler Brothers and The Oakridge Boys were the two HUGE male ensembles in country music in the 70's and 80's. Lots of great songs by both groups, Harri. Thanks for sharing thi one. 🙂

I saw them in concert years ago. They got their name while sitting in a motel room trying to book a gig, and while on the phone, they were asked, what is your group name? One of them saw a box of tissue on the nightstand called Statler Tissue. He told the man on the phone they are the Statler Brothers.

It was still possible for what is basically a barbershop quartet to have a hit in the ‘60s. 😂

The guy at the top (Lew DeWitt)had to leave the group in 1989 due to health issues and was replaced by Jimmy Fortune who was with the group until they retired and now is singing on his own. He wrote a lot of their later songs.
