    That is a nice improvement, I like how the penny washers increase the grip of the rubber grommets which should protect and prolong the good condition of the grommets and help prevent water ingress around the bolts.
    Removing the excess bolt length also gives a very pleasing neatness to the appearance between the panniers and motorbike.
    Great job and thanks for posting.

      Cheers Barry,
      you're welcome !
      I only ended up squishing the grommets the first time because I had no larger M6 washers, so was forced to use the ones I had. But when I was ordering the bolts I thought I'd see if it would be easy to get M6 penny washers for sensible money and it was. So it was a no brainer to add them to the order and fit them if I was going to swap the bolts out anyway.
      As you say, should make it less likely for water to enter around the bolts ( not that I ride in the rain anyway 😇 ) and looks a lot more "professionally done" than the previous arrangement.
      Take care Barry and thanks for watching the entire series. You must be a glutton for punishment 😛

      Thanks LE,
      yes, doing the lists as animations was hard work but I was up for the challenge 😉
      But now the three part series is done and dusted and I can hopefully get back to making some less involved videos 🤞
      Was out briefly on both the Classic and the Meteor today and I must say that I really do love how the Meteor looks with the cases on.
      I‘m so glad, that with your help, I was able to make those panniers fit a Meteor because the end result is one of the nicest Meteor luggage solutions I‘ve seen ( even if the panniers are a bit cheap and nasty, they look good and can carry stuff ).
      Thanks for all of your advice and engineering skills without which these cases would probably still be stuck in a box in the garage !
      Take care Peter 👍

    Great project and the end result makes the panniers look as if they were made for the Meteor. I had no idea that far less expensive panniers than those offered by Givi were available and this series of vids has been very informative - thanks. As a veteran bodger I would have to reduce the length of all the bolts and spacers to a minimum and add a bracing strut from passenger footrest area to closest pannier bolt to reduce the in/out flapping/vibration that the beer suffered in your previous video. In fact, this project is worth doing for the beer test alone I reckon!

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Ron,
      I was able to open the beer right away without losing a single drop. The vibrations can’t be too bad !!! Also the manufacturer doesn’t suggest a third mounting point, officially they are supposed to just hang from two upper mounting points and at 5kg per side, I don’t see a problem with that. I think most of the frothing comes from the bumps when riding, to be honest.
      I agree, apart from the slightly cheap looking plastic, these really could be OEM cases. The shape and size suit the Meteor perfectly ! When I saw them, I recognised that straight away. I had no idea if they could be made to fit a Meteor but at that price I thought it was worth a punt.
      The channel motivated me to do it but I am so glad that I did !
      I love the practicality of having storage on the bike and now think that my Meteor is a really cute mini bagger 🥰🥰🥰
      Give it a go Ron ! If you have any questions, fire away !
      Cheers 🥃

      a better result than I ever imagined was possible. I thought I‘d bodge them on there somehow and would never be happy with them as a result, but no, I did a steady considered job, a step at a time, and I ended up with something which looks like it was fitted by somebody with experience of fitting panniers 🤗 Sometimes I surprise myself 😂😂😂
      Thanks for that U D, I‘m glad that you are happy with my work too 🙏 and not just me 😛

    Thank you so much for this video. The panniers fits the bike perfectly. Your parts list and comments are very clear. May I suggest to grind the fixing bars top ends in a round shape for a better look and less risk of injury to hands ?
    Keep safe.

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Loic,
      I think what you are suggesting is a nice idea but beyond my capabilities unfortunately. The top of the brackets is ugly but the edges are slightly round. I don't think I'd ever hurt myself on them to be honest with you.
      But if you had a grinder and a file, you could definitely cut them down and reshape them which would also mean that you could fit the cases nearer to the bike because at the moment the top part of the bracket interferes with the grab handle if you come in 1cm. If you cut the top down I think you could pull the cases in 1cm which would be worthwhile.
      So it's a great suggestion but unfortunately I do not have a grinder so will be leaving the brackets as standard for now. I don't feel confident CUTTING metal 😱
      Thank you for watching. I am glad that you found my instructions clear. Are you thinking of getting these panniers for your bike ?
      Cheers Loic,

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      P.S.
      The brackets are currently painted black which should help to stop them rusting.
      If you cut or file them down, the edges will need to be painted again because bare steel will rust very quickly. So that's another reason why I am not too keen to cut the brackets down. If you cut or file them down, you really need to repaint them afterwards and I am too lazy to do that 😛
      Cheers 👍🏻,

      @@economicalrides I do appreciate your comments and definitly agree with you about steel protection, painting and grinding. If you do not have any suitable handtool or machine for metal, better leave it as it is 👍.
      I have a classic 500. I fitted genuine RE luggage racks and "military" panniers, to my eyes, perfect: cheap and well made, easy to fit and solid racks, canvas nice looking panniers.

    Really detailed video, should be able to get most of that from Wilko's or b&q. Quite interesting, but I'd probably pop some loktight on those nuts.....a bit of loktight blue glue will keep the nuts from vibrating off. It will be interesting to see how much vibration is channeled through. Can't wait to see the 500 mile review, from my own bad experiences I carry spare all sorts around with me now,! Take care and stay safe! Get those nuts blued 🤣🤣🤣🤣

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi QPB,
      they are nyloc nuts, they shouldn’t need thread lock. I‘m just checking after every ride at the moment and so far nothing is budging.
      I have some blue Loctite but with nylocs you shouldn’t need it. The top bolts are not moving either but then I did use the torque setting „pigging tight“ 😂
      Cheers QPB 🥃 ( rum ! )

      The standard Meteor seat is very nice, I just had the touring seat fitted from new because I liked how it looked.
      As you say, after 1,5 hours the standard seat starts to create pressure points.
      With the touring seat, for me, it takes 2-3 hours before discomfort sets in.
      But the standard seat is still very good compared to other bikes.

    Looks great. I wonder would a number of those penny washers placed beside each other (10 of them for example) be sufficient to create/act as spacers 🤔

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Wayne,
      you definitely could if you had enough of them.
      For the top bolts you need a smaller diameter than 22mm, I think maybe 12-15mm and then you‘d just need A LOT of M8 washers.
      If LanesExplorer hadn’t stepped in to help me, that’s probably what I would have ended up doing, although one piece spacers do look better.
      Initially I used 3x15mm nylon spacers but they won’t allow you to get the grab handle bolts tight because they just compress and compress the more you tighten.
      I‘d say the top spacers need to be of the hardest metal available, simply because you will need to torque down on them pretty tight.
      For the top ones I think steel was definitely better and for the bottom ones, aluminium is fine, since you won’t be torquing down so tightly on the pannier bolts ( the nuts there are nyloc too, so excessive tightening should not be required ).
      So are you thinking of doing the same Wayne ?
      Cheers,
      ER.

      @@economicalrides I'd say so. I hope to be picking up my Meteor in a few weeks. I'll be staying local enough to break in the bike but no doubt when that's done I'll need a luggage solution for longer rides.

      @@MentatOfDune OK, good luck with your new bike Wayne 👍🏻. Bear in mind that these cases are small at 12L and 5kg max load per side.
      They are day luggage and not travel luggage. They are ok for transporting a few tools, clothes and a bottle of water or something. They are not going to be any good for an around the world trip, in case that is what you have planned 😉 Definitely day luggage and not travel luggage I would say. But if that is all you need, then I would recommend them, both for the looks and the price. At that price you can't go wrong.
