I really enjoy the mixed media panels. It helps with story pacing. It gives your eye a place to slow down on and take in the extra detail when there needs to be a lingering moment. Same Keith is good at this in his books.
I'd go to Barnes and Noble and get the volumes of Blade. One of my favorite mangas after Ranma 1/2. Got some side eyes from other students who saw the manji imagery though...man I was a total weeb.
Important note: Dark Horse eventually discontinued the standard size, single issues after a hundred something isssues. You can only get the complete series in collected form.

I have the full run of Venus Wars translated by Toren Smith. Such a cool comic. Beautiful brushwork and screentones. I would love to see you guys go through that!
I'd imagine another reason for not flipping the art is because of the manji symbol. Then it would be the direction of a swastika. I'm still a bit surprised the comic was localized and sold because of that imagery. I just recently found the last half-dozen volumes so I can finally find out how things end.
It's my favourite manga, and I'm a real hard sell on manga. There's Lone Wolf & Cub, Akira (colour and B&W seem almost like different stories), and the original, uncensored Ghost in the Shell (because that book bangs hard)
I don't know if it was published exclusively in AFTERNOON COMICS, I have a vague memory of it moving to different magazine because AFTERNOON folded, but I was buying it for awhile there before the shop I frequented stopped stocking them. I'll have to dig them out and show you some pics on twitter or instagram. AFTERNOON was a monthly anthology, by the way. There were some panels which were just pencil sketches, incomplete panels, which would be finished later for the tonkubuns.
Wasn't part of the reason the comic wasn't mirrored over because of the manji (the reverse swastika), because if you flipped it it just becomes a swastika* and loses it's original meaning? "Warriors of the Wind" was that crap adaptation of the Nausicaa movie. I was reading the Viz manga when I heard that there was a full version of the movie out there through the fansub scene. It became my holy grail for 2-3 years, and man, was I ecstatic when I finally got my hands on a 7th gen VHS copy. It's still my favourite anime movie, and it holds up too. *Before those WWII German baddies perverted it's meaning through their association with it, it wasn't a "bad" symbol anyways. It still isn't in many cultures and religions, such as Jainism, which is quite possibly the most peaceful religion on Earth. The irony of that never fails to amuse me.
The symbol is buddhist for peace. As I release you from hell with that death. The mirror was done to stop recreation of the art work. The books have a glossery page that explains the terminology for the different elements. As in ronin is a samuri who server no lord or master. Even explained that the nazi adapted the buddhit symbol for there own use. The books are amazing an tough to come by

12:48 I see you 😂 Though really, Yas is pretty great. His style in Gundam The Origin was very cinematic as one of my friends put, and I completely agree. A lot of his books never have made it state side, but his is no slouch.
lol i would HATE reading this in single issues like that, im glad they figured out takobon and collections in the US. Check out Die Wergelder by the same author, very brutal, or Ohikkoshi, which is anthology of mroe slice of life stuff. for something quite different. I would also recommend the classic VAGABOND by Takehiko Inoue

That wasn't a "$wastika" (trying to avoid the TH-cam censor-bots), that was a Manji, like the character's name. Otherwise awesome review of a manga from the early "Wild West" heyday of manga translation! Toren Smith was THE guy, I mean, they named a character after him in "Aim For The Top: Gunbuster"!
