How long it takes to learn pump foiling - my two years experience

  • My journey started two years. Pump foiling is amazing! I started this new awesome activity in June 2022.
    Pumping for a couple of seconds was already an incredible feeling that made it not just a workout for Wingfoil/Surffoil but a great activity on its own.
    Two years later I’m capable of things that I thought I would NEVER be able to achieve. My last personal record is pumping for 25min 5,3km long in only one ride after beachstarting… Starting anywhere is not a problem anymore. If I want, I will find a way!
    Choosing the right frontwing is very important. A low aspect ratio wing for beginners will make it much more easier to master the start and pump for a few seconds. A high aspect ratio one will make possible to pump for a very long time but will be very difficult for beginners.
    The frontwings I used:
    - low aspect ratio Gong x-over xxl 100cm
    - mid aspect ratio Gong Fluid T xxl 105cm
    - high aspect ratio Gong Sirus xl 136cm
    The board is also very important. As beginner a small surffoil board like the Matata 3’11 will be perfect. With more experience and to pump for a long time, a small stiff pump board like the Kluber 80cm like be awesome!

      @@pavlodeshko depending on the time I have 😅 never enough 😢, in average one hour.
      How many “goes”: it depends on when you mean it. At the beginning it was a lot because I was not able to pump for a long time. When you are learning it’s good to take your time, not to rush between two attempts, breathe and relax before each start.
      Now it depends on what I do: freestyle tricks = several starts, or even one start if I do a long distance ride ;)

    I am a wingfoiler , Kitefoiler. What setup would you recommend to start?

    • @Ludo_freefoiler
      @Ludo_freefoiler  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Maybe for the board you have one from Kitefoiling that you could use to begin with. Do you have something less than 4’ with almost no rocker? For the Frontwing do you have sth already for light wing conditions? The best to begin with would be a low aspect ratio one, 2000cm2 for 100cm. Mast 65/70cm.
      If you need more info, just tell me ;)

      Pour exploser mon record, oui. Avec une petite surffoil board j’étais à 7min, le premier jour avec la Kluber j’ai fait 11min. Petite et rigide, elle est géniale. Tout est transmit directement au foil

    Bravo et merci pour tous les détails. C'est encourageant! Comme je t'ai déjà dit j'ai une xover avec laquelle j'ai un taux de réussite de 9/10. J'ai essayé la fluid xxl 105 et j'ai pas réussi à partir avec. Est-ce que je continue à m'acharner sur la fluide ou je laisse tomber. La sirus est plus simple au départ que la fluide ou plus difficile?

    • @Ludo_freefoiler
      @Ludo_freefoiler  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Merci ☺️
      Tu pars en dock ou beach start ?
      La fluid est bien plus difficile que la x-over, il lui faut plus de vitesse au départ. Une fois lancée, elle va plus vite et permet de pomper plus longtemps que la x-over.
      La Sirus xl a besoin de moins de vitesse, donc si tu ne peux pas partir avec plus de vitesse (par exemple dock court) ça pourrait être plus facile avec la Sirus que la Fluid. La Sirus est plus radicale mais si tu gères avec la x-over ça devrait fonctionner après quelques essaies. Et de toute façon, c’est un investissement, la Sirus fonctionne bien mieux. Je tenterai la Sirus xl !

      Merci pour la réponse. T'as été clair. Je pars en dock et beach start. En beach start j'ai un taux de réussite de 30%. Jamais essayé autre foil en beach start. Peut être je devrais essayer la fluide en beach start vu que je peux avoir plus de vitesse. Merci encore et félicitation pour les belles vidéos que tu fais 🤙

    Do u think the newest X-Over XXL is the best gong front wing to get started? Which mast length should i choose?

    • @Ludo_freefoiler
      @Ludo_freefoiler  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      When I started pump foiling two years ago it was with the x-over xxl. I learnt very fast and the price is quite low. According to my experience, to learn in good conditions the new X-over xxl is a good choice! 65cm Alu mast is a good length to get started (the shorter the easier) for Beachstart and Dockstart with Docks almost at the water level. If the dock where you will learn is high, you might need to adjust the length.

    Bravo ludo, belle progression. Je fais egalement du dock et des beachstart, olanche Carbonne 5L sabfoil et kujira 1440 lais malgré une bonne technique jai du mal a tenir plus que la minute. Je oense que je suis un peu juste en surface daile avant. Cest quoi tes surfaces dailes pour du beach et du dockstart

      Oui il te faut plus de surface pour tenir plus longtemps! J’ai commencé avec 2200cm2 (X-Over) puis 1950 (Fluid T) et maintenant 1700cm2 (haut ratio Sirus xl).

    How did you learn so efficiently? I started in October 2019, 65 sessions and I can barely pump 5 seconds. When I started I had a good kitefoil experience (100km+ sessions) and since october 2019, I've learnt wingfoil and found it easy. Did you took lessons or something?

    • @Ludo_freefoiler
      @Ludo_freefoiler  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I haven’t took any lessons but watched a lot of videos at the beginning.
      I give you some tips, I hope this will help you. Don’t give up!
      1. Start with a beginner dick low aspect ratio frontwing (2000cm2, 100cm).
      2. Dockstart as first start.
      3. By lightwind in Wingfoil use your pump foil setup (mast, frontwing and stab). Train to pump with your wing behind you as long as you can
      What setup are you using?

      @@Ludo_freefoiler Thanks! I had Gong Rise XXL on custom board with 65 and 80cm mast, then sroka classic 2000 on Gong Catch 4'0 board with 80 and 70cm mast, and now Lol 1900 on Catch 4'0 with 75cm mast. I will try to pump it while winging. I thought it was not possible with the big 70L board (inflatable)

      @@fredodofre it is possible to pump a bit with a big board. It will not last long and not feel as good as with a small pump board, but to train while wingfoiling this is worth it

      Thank you! Yes 👍 would you want to know sth in particular? It’s working well in light wind conditions, with a 3m wing and pump board, 5/7 knots for me are fine (62kg). Challenging is the Beachstart with the wing (wind has to come from the opposite side where you have wing so that it flies behind you) and not falling otherwise you have to swim back to the shore. I will make a video as soon as I can ;)

      Yes my question was whether you always use a pumpboard or something with much more volume.
      Did you have winging experience before?
      I just have a pump board and wonder if I could get started like that
