I walked through Catesby tunnel from Charwelton in 1974...with a couple of mates..all the ballast was still there in the trackbed...there were 3 ventilation shafts in the tunnel ..the middle one was pouring with water...we went on to the viaduct...ballast still in place again...then er walked back through the tunnel to the car parked in Charwelton...was an experience...nearly 50 years ago... Bob Palmer Paignton...

That must have been quite an experience, by all accounts they've made a top notch test facility out of it now! 👍

Catesby Tunnel is being converted into an underground motor vehicle test track! There was a cracking talk about it at the SubBrit meeting a few weeks ago. The other end is already well developed.

That explains why it was so well secured. At least I'll know where to go now if I have any underground vehicles that need testing!

Picnic would have been perfect mate!!! You’re so observant and have so much knowledge with seemingly everything you come across. Hope you enjoyed our tea and a bun... all the best from Hannah and I!

Thanks, it was an interesting walk, although not as exotic as your travels. Enjoying following your adventures around the world!

Interesting to see the deformation of the bricks at the base of the track bed. Thanks for showing us :-)

A nice find. Such a shame it has sat there for over 50 years with no purpose. Can imagine the clackety clack of trucks on the top. 😁👍🏻 Trev

Great video. Fantastic day for it! Any chance you could let me know where you parked and what route you took by foot? Looking to film a music video in that area this weekend and am trying to find the easiest way of getting there.

A while ago now but I parked some way back along the railway line and walked a fair way in. You may be able to park on Catesby Lane but it is very narrow with soft verges as I recall.
