That's such a great kick drum sound. As always, thanks for tapping each head so we can hear the pitch clearly. This channel has the BEST tuning videos around.
Such a great "No fuss" video and another great one from this channel. Lately, I've been loving the Aquarian Superkick II felt-ring batter and Regulator (middle foam control ring) front combination. Those seem to tension up and sound great without doing much else.
I see a lot of drummers put their vent hole on the right side of the reso head at around the 4 o'clock position. I've always tended to put the vent hole on the left side at around the 8 o'clock position, the reasoning being that the mic going into the bass drum will be less prone to pick up the snare drum. Maybe it doesn't matter at all and I'm just fixating! What are your thoughts on the vent hole positioning?
I own a 24x14, so same process except tensioning just a little higher than this video to get the shell activated. Otherwise I don't get a bass drum sound, just a plastic slap.
I guess since the elbow is pointy it has more dent risk? I’ve honestly pulled a Simon and stood on the bass drum to seat the head and I’ve never had damage thankfully 😂
Simon Philips is a small boi, so bear that in mind when he does that! I know a fair few techs who swear by standing on bass heads and giving all other heads cpr before applying tension, to help seat the head properly. Sounds Like a Drum gives a varying opinion, so essentially there are no rules and you can do what you find works for you
Great vid ty .The Question i have is i have a hard time getting the drum to feel right when using a Double pedal .I just cant get it to feel right , Maybe its me .. Any tips .Ty Happy Holidays stay well
Try pitching the batter head up a bit, I find the firmer feel gives better rebound. Muffle accordingly if you begin to get too much sustain. Or pitch down if you want the opposite feel.
Good suggestions except for the blankets. Stuffing the drum with blankets takes away so much tone! So many bass drums sound like boxes instead of having that full, rich, open, resonant sound. Just my opinion. Otherwise very helpful suggestions. Cheers.
Idk, I feel like for pop/rock contexts, the bass drum needs to be short and articulate. Having too many open qualities just gets in the way of those mixes imo. For jazz, keep them open
@charlzthedrummer And what if John Bonham and Mitch Mitchell had of thought that? To me the current drum sounds sound...well like compressed boxes. But...obviously it's each to their own tunings and sound. It would be boring without the endless choices. 🥁

And I've got to say, a piano black Gretsch with gold badges are amongst the classiest looking drums I've ever seen!
Great as always!
nice video & smooth drumming in the end! :)

That head sounded horrible on my Starclassic 24" Maple Bass Drums.
Powerstroke 3.....This is the way
Nice work.

Good argument. Never thought about it this way! 👍
Great video... Any tips for 24 inch bass drums? Same process?

3:38 dont use your elbows it might dent the head.
Simon Philipps casually playing trampoline on his base drums

I only run my drums wide open, with the exception of a 1 1/2" felt strip on the inside of the bass drum reso head. 😎 🥁 Gretsch

Exactly zero information about the relations of heads for final sound
Do you want him to hold your hand too?
@@JohnSumner13 Not really. But the name of the video is "How to tune...", not "Look, how I put the heads on...and the sound does not really matter"
@@lukastrcka251 He tuned the batter head to B and reso head a 3rd above, so D. Hope i helped.
