Great Guy and Great Player, but not what you want as a Coach. The types you want for coaches are the Wayne Chrebet/Jerry Rice/Wes Welker types. The Guys that succeeded because they did all the little things rather than on pure willpower and physical ability like Steve Smith.

Wes Welker had his breakout in Miami though before going to NE, thats why it cost NE a 2nd and 7th round Pick to get him. He succeeded in 2006 with Joey Harrington being his Primary QB. Kinda weird, but Roddy White also had his breakout season in 2007 with Joey Harrington as his QB.
“Accessories” That’s how I feel about the combine. When I played college football, I saw a lot of really good players get benched or told they weren’t gonna play just because of a 40 time. Despite the fact they were better than the player in front of them. It boggles my mind, especially going up playing basketball where skill (technique) is the emphasis. Some unfair bullshit
Steve, Rome doesn't look like he gets great separation in college, but he had a fantastic contested catch rate. How do you think this translates to the NFL? Hopkins seems like a good comp, how do you think that compares and do you see challenges to his game translating to the NFL with less separation than the other premium WRs in this draft?
Yup combine is just a spandex Olympics bs … I feel like they should be wearing full pads as well also 40 line up in your position stance and then run it

Steve is right. All those measurements can't gauge a player's desire, determination, technique, their feel for the ball in the air, and their willingness to listen to the veterans and get better. Speed isn't everything. Every top WR isn't a speed demon. Mike Evans, Nico Collins, DeAndre Hopkins, etc.
mike evans is a giant, deandre hopkins was a speed demon in college, nico collins route running has developed tremendously. but even he got some really great burst off the line and separation at the top of the route. like speed is important on this day is all i’m saying. these kids had 4 years to show their route running.

I think the shuttle is at least more useful than the 40 and it makes sense for someone like Edelman because there was no tape on him as a WR. For the high end guys i have no idea why people care about the combine when there are 30 games of tape
Because most of those games are against subpar competition, and nobody has the same situation. The Combine provides standardized testing where you can directly compare results in the same situations. Every player is in a different situation in terms of the team around them in College. So if you want to compare directly, you run them all through the same tests. This allows them to compare your physical attributes directly. Common Denominators are important. Robert Gallery looked great in College, so good the Raiders took him 2nd Overall. He only hit the 225 for 24 Reps at the Combine though and some questions arose. He then became an epic bust as he was overpowered by NFL level competition. The Combine exposed him. Jamarcus Russell and Vince Young had combine issues that forecast their eventual downfalls. Matt Leinart had a mediocre combine that led to his mediocre career....
