I just purchased a new 2023 MT09… it’s an absolute riot for just under 11k. I’ve rode a variety of motorcycles and this is my first “light/fast” bike, and this bike is amazing for the street. Plenty of power, great handling, good aftermarket, and reliability! I honestly can’t think of a better motorcycle for your intermediate rider looking to crack up into the sub 450 pound/sub 3.5 second motorcycle. Thank you Yamaha! Fell in love with the brand because of a 1998 Yamaha virago 1100xv
Going to the dealership this weekend to check out a 23 mt-09. They are better looking than the 24 model imo. I dig the smaller screen and the rider position is more upright due to the bars being higher and pegs lower. Only real complaint I heard was if you go for heavy riding or track days you can experience some brake fade in the 23 over the 24 brembo model, how ever I suspect you whack a more solid pair of pads in the fronts and that will be sorted.
Most people just can’t wait for the R9 (me included) but most people don’t realise that the MT-09 will be the more fun bike to ride & do it for longer periods 😎

Brilliant review mate, i tested the basic model while i wait for my SP coming, i think the SP will be on another level handling wise and i simply cannot wait to get my hands on it 😊
Having owned one of the previous MT09 models, I can fully concur with your sentiments on this machine Chops 👍. I can see that Yamaha has improved what was previously known as a bonkers bike. Love it, Chops ❤😊
I have a gen 2 09sp. I test rode the outgoing sp today as well as the 24 standard model. I had a blast on both of them. The outgoing model is great, and yamaha is doing some great deals on them right now. But i really want the 24 sp so i put my deposit down for one. Cant wait.
Ive just got back home after test riding one of these in the same colour. Great bit of kit. Test rode the bmw F900r shortly after as well and the Yamaha is smoother and I think more value for money. Great video chopsy!
I looked hard at the MT09/XSR900 before I bought my Z900. It’s got a few more tech goodies over the Z900, but I liked the ergonomics of the Z900 more, it’s more in the bike and a little more leaned forward, more tucked. Both have more than enough power on the freeway but the Z900 definitely has a little more grunt, the power is also a little smoother. The longer swingarm on the Z900 also aids in it feeling more stable at higher speeds. The Z900 needs a tech upgrade though, the MT09 has a 6 axis IMU, cruise control and an up/down quick shifter… the tech doesn’t matter as much to me, but for some it definitely does. I also like Kawasaki’s TFT more, that’s subjective though.
A set of flat bars could go a bit to sorting the weight issue over the front. That front end though. I've no idea what Yamaha design team are smoking this past decade. Outside of the R bikes they've a face only a mother could love.
It's not for me, but a brave guess would be that this fun toy will - vastly - outsell the expectations that Yamaha have for it. The supercrisp and clear display is a really nice touch, the general behaviour looks to be able to titillate quite a few types of riders.
Had a look at the XSR 900GP and the new MT-09 at my local Yamaha dealer both machines are very nice. I was informed to wait for the R9 before making my final decision. R9 is going to be special really i am looking forward to the reveal.
Good suspension and good tyres are what makes a bike great to ride. Throw in a CP3 engine and your golden. I own a first gen MT09 which I almost didn’t buy because of the terrible stock suspension. Now with Hyperpro full spec shock (slow- and high speed compression adjustability) and front springs it is one of the best bikes I’ve ridden. Not just fun but serious carving business. Just like the S23’s from the factory are not as good as the aftermarket S23’s, so is the SP’s Öhlins. The price of having aftermarket suspension set to your weight and riding style installed by a professional, is as about much as the price difference between the standard and SP version.
I had a 2017 MT09, and just picked up the 24.... Theres a lot to like about the new one but in some ways its worse. The throttle feels worse, and 2nd has been neutered in a silly way. I can only assume this was for emissions shenanigans. I enjoy some of the new electronics but throttle mapping is not this bikes strong suit.
Absolutely love this new MT09 Apart from the Colour & like you said the exhaust is absolutely hideous & I wouldn't go for the accessory Akro I would go for the Yoshi as it looks absolutely awesome & it's sounds absolutely awesome too!!😃 Great review as ever Chops & please hurry up with the SP review hehe? As that could be my next bike depending or different reviews & my own test ride?☺️ All the best Chopsy!!👌🏻👍🏻
Getting really impatient waiting for my SP to arrive, (I ordered it over a month ago) won’t be here until the end of August, so won’t be getting it until September 😮
This really is the best sector for a road bike. Eveybike is this category is amazing. This MT09 is the best value in class. I wanted one, but the standard version is not being released in my country, and eho knows when the SP will arrive. KTM done an awesome promo here on the 2023 but new 890r. So im waiting on delivery. It's a tough choice with the MT09, street 765, and the 890r/990. Although the 990 is overpriced, IMO.
as someone who has ridden both the 24 Mt09 and the new street triple r and rs, the mt09 wins hands down the striple only wins out on track handling and the higher rpm = higher peak power but for the road, the mt09 easily wins out
I tried to buy a new MT09 back in 2021, but couldn't due to supply problems. So glad I didn't, because I found out afterwards that the handling wasn't great on that model. Time moves on, and I'm looking for another bike and this is back on my list, but it's a pity the looks are let down by that hideous exhaust. Never mind, there's always the Yamaha MT-10 SP and a belly pan!
I've got the base Tracer 9, and I'm saving up for full Ktech suspension (about £1500) coz again........amazing all round bike, but the suspension is quite basic : a bit choppy at low speed, and lacks control when going for it on a bumpy B road
I currently own a 2018 MT10 SP and was seriously thinking about the new MT09 SP but I am going to wait a little while because I am sure there will be a new MT10 with that same updated looks and electronic package coming out in the next year or two. I just feel I might miss the grunt of a litre CP4 engine plus I do alot of touring
@@Mike_P646 yeah i intend too mate its a cracking package altogether been on litre bikes for 30 years now and i am sure within the next 2 years there will be a new MT10 coming out out with all the new electronics and hopefully a bigger tank lol
Chops, knowing you've also praised the Monster SP, which would you say you'd prefer more? I recently traded from a Multi V4 Pikes Peak to a Monster SP. Still in the break-in period so I still don't have a good feeling to how the bike performs but so far seems promising!
Excellent vid as always buddy, I'd love to see a 3 way with this or the sp version and the duke 990 and the street tripple rs with you and greg, simply awesome
Me too. Chuck in an 890r. Would have to be the mt09sp to compare with the street 765 rs and 890r. They all have brembo stylema and upgraded suspension.
@@LambChopRides I'd be really hyped about comparing it to the Brutale 800 R (ideally not RR) and the Triple RS. To check which is the most fun triple! You did it once , but thats 6 years ago!
And it will never have Yamaha reliability or build quality then you have to pay to unlock the tech pack on the KTM. Had a superduke before my MT10 and its night and day the build quality. My current MT10 is my 19th yamaha I just have never had aproblem withthem
Nice bike to be a hooligan but the street triple is better looking especially the new baja orange and of course the carnival red and the yellow on the rs
Great review ❤. The looks are a lot better Tony Shark would approve. However the wheels would require a makeover for me . Great sound and obviously a lot of fun , as demonstrated by yourself. Looking forward to to the comparison with the KTM . Keep it black side down Chops .
Great review & bike. Although I'm definitely getting old as it looks like a handful & I don't want one. I can't be arsed having a wrestling match with it when I give it some beans & also having to faff about with all the electronics so I don't loop it & end up in a ditch lol. That's a bit tongue in cheek tbh as I'd more concerned about my licence.
Interesting. I'm picking mine up today, after six years on two 1290 Super Adv. I just wanted to start over, without the weight and the bulk, even though the (esp latest) SAS are really fine motorbikes. And I was never able to travel as much as I thought I would. I test rode the MT-09 a few weeks ago, and that was it. Funnily, I disagree with all the comments about the SP being worth it, and here is why. First, Yamaha is pushing so hard to make people wanting to buy the SP that there is a catch, of course. They do much more money out of the SP. Now, can you get the same quality out of a regular MT-09 and some aftermarket changes, for less money, without the scale savings? I'm convinced you can... And here is the kicker: I weigh about as much as you do, Chopsy. And the first components to tune, in the suspension department, are the SPRINGS. The SP will have better components, sure, but, as every single Japanese bike, it will be set for a 70 kg rider. Exactly the same as the regular one. So, better damping, yes. Finer control, yes. But way too soft for heavy riders anyway. And, because I know that a lot of people are confused with it, I feel the need to point out that NO, adjusting the preload doesn't change the stiffness of a spring. Those who think otherwise, ask Neevesy. My English is way too bad to do a better job than his, of explaining this. Of course, 'standard' riders will get benefits from the SP. And if they like the colour scheme (I don't), it will be worth the bonus to them. But for a heavy rider? It's a waste of money, because you will always have to respring the thing. Oh, and as for almost everybody here, from what I can read, an R9 might be my end game. Cheers.
Chopsey I have a 21 smcr and was looking at possibly changing for a bike that could offer as much fun but that could be more comfortable at the touring aspect. Is this the bike??
Hi! I have a question. Between this MT09 2024 & the current XSR900 (not the GP), which one has more aggressive ergonomic riding position? Or which is more relaxed? Up right position or more relaxed position is very important to know for me. Thank you.
Good bike, but won't beat my MT10 (23). But that's a lot of bike for under 10k. I de-catted my mt10, so much better and it's tuned. Bit of pop and bang too.
Hate sitting upright, wind blows u backwards, the buffeting is horrendous and my back start to get tired after a while. being slightly tilted forward like on the old Ducati streetfighter, new streetfighters at least is a must as it actually helps u when u travel long because the wind will lift u up instead of fight u. have the ktm 950sm and I hate the seating position. Think the new mt09 looks nice comapred to the old one, especially the frame but it kinda looks budget:ish somehow. Almost like it looks like a stamped steel frame that is welded together instead of alu twinspar/deltabox frame. But the bike is so fun, my d675 and my friend st765 felt pure ZzZzZz engine wise compared to this(gen 1 mt09)
Nah! you want an old 900cc engine in it, I think they deliberately make them underpowered to not compete with their own 1000cc bikes such as the eMpTy-10. My 2000 E1 ZX9r was a 144bhp 101Nm bike with a short ratio gearbox (around 75mph out of first) that done 0-60 in 3 secs stock, and was the first production bike to do a sub 10 sec quarter mile run (some of these modern 200bhp bikes that cost ridiculous money can't quite do that), and that was the heavy 98-99 C models, the E and F models are so much better with lots of changes all over. With some tuning and mods and replacing the very heavy original exhaust, my ZX9r no doubt accelerates just as quick if not quicker than an H2 to 100mph+, top speed is a fair bit lower around 175mph, but how often do we need even that, and that bike cost me only £2400 three years ago. It is so scary I barely use first gear since I made quite a lot of changes 😂
I actually like the cyclops eye haha, no complaint, been riding the 22 version since mid 22, fantastic, only possible complaint is that its not a MT10. And ohh no you changed your intro! I liked that old ones musical
The color on your demo bike in the video makes the bike look "Barbie" or "Ken". I know it's the contemporary "in" color pallet but the bike will look dated in a few years. Kudos to Yamaha for all the latest improvements.
Many reviewers of the latest gen bike create the impression that the previous gen was reasonably flawed. I feel that in the case of the MT09, other than the looks, the criticisms are mostly personal preference and in some cases ignorance (i.e. they just didn't realise that gen 3 also has the feature. E.g. range & fuel consumption). The heart of the bike is the engine, gearbox, chassis and electronics, and nothing has changed on that front. The rider triangle is adjustable on both bike's and the new version just uses the alternative position for the foot pegs and handle bars. The only functional difference is the addition of the maps. While maps are cool they are not really necessary on a sports bike. If you are going touring and needs the maps maybe the Tracer is for you.
If you manage to get on the mt09 sp launch, can you have a word about the R9 for us ? Maybe you need to put the answer in code. Something like a weather reference. Ow looks like rain later, for it's still not decided. Or suns out today, for green light we will see it this or next year. :)
Hey, I just got my MT-09 last week and I'm still breaking it in (760km/470mi). Did you (or anyone else) noticed a slight clacking or rattle sound from the engine if you coldstart your bike? It really only epears if the bike is cold and disapears after just a few secounds... I read in forums that's normal because the oil pressure has to build up, but I still feel insecure... I will visit my dealer next week anyway...

I love the sound and I’m pretty sure if I knew how to mic it up and post a video riding around. Most people would probably think it’s aftermarket
I've got the Suzuki 2024 gsxs1000 and the induction noise pisses me off tbh. Not their fault as it's the euro emissions but I can tell you it's a good job I don't have an MOT for 3 years so I can mid pipe it with an SC project end can. 🤣👍
Loved that Chopsy! This is coming dangerously close to my bike of the year… Yamaha's engineers just get it
Thanks Tim! Yeah think the SP could indeed take that title... Let's see 👍
Brilliant review mate, i tested the basic model while i wait for my SP coming, i think the SP will be on another level handling wise and i simply cannot wait to get my hands on it 😊
Yo esperando también a la Sp.Para finales de Junio.
Loving that front wheel cam Chopsy!
Having owned one of the previous MT09 models, I can fully concur with your sentiments on this machine Chops 👍.
I can see that Yamaha has improved what was previously known as a bonkers bike.
Love it, Chops ❤😊
Morning chopsy im just waiting for that r9.
I have a gen 2 09sp. I test rode the outgoing sp today as well as the 24 standard model. I had a blast on both of them. The outgoing model is great, and yamaha is doing some great deals on them right now. But i really want the 24 sp so i put my deposit down for one. Cant wait.
What deals are on the gen3 sp? In the UK
What is the price and expected arrive date of the gen4 sp?
@@chriswest2290 im in Australia so i have no clue about the UK.
@MsChrisep ohh my bad. What deals you got there?
For people 6 feet and higher, Z900 is no go. Ergos are for shorter people. Fair enough.
CAN NOT wait for the R9 and the M
Had a look at the XSR 900GP and the new MT-09 at my local Yamaha dealer both machines are very nice. I was informed to wait for the R9 before making my final decision. R9 is going to be special really i am looking forward to the reveal.
I'm so tempted to get one, but I got a slightly used gen3 last year, so I'll just wait for the R9.
As soon as the sp comes chop get it on the channel I’m looking to change my tuono for one
Hopefully I'm on the SP launch 🤞
Dark side of Japan is So dark that the Designers couldnt even see the bike when they were designing it...🤣😂
Haha 🤪
Should I upgrade to the MT-09 SP from a Tuono 660 factory?
SC Project STR-1 is the perfect exhaust for the MT 09....😍😍😍😍😍
Great video, thank you! QQ: is it even better fun than Street Triple RS?
yes
as someone who has ridden both the 24 Mt09 and the new street triple r and rs, the mt09 wins hands down
the striple only wins out on track handling and the higher rpm = higher peak power
but for the road, the mt09 easily wins out
I tried to buy a new MT09 back in 2021, but couldn't due to supply problems.
Looks like it ticks a lot of the boxes, and sounds like it comes fully loaded, but not sure I'm a fan of any of the 2024 colours for this bike.
Do I swap my gsxs 1000 for it mines mapped..nitron shocked im really tempted
they are great bikes loved all 19k miles i did on mine selling it now wish i had the room to keep it but only got room for one bike
Nice video Chops. What’s with the cables taped up with insulation tape? Seems a level below the Triumphs in terms of build quality
👍 but more reasonably priced and probably less chance of recalls😄
Could you add the Street Triple R/RS in your next comparo video? Thanks
Will see what I can sort 👍
This 💯🙌
I've got the base Tracer 9, and I'm saving up for full Ktech suspension (about £1500) coz again........amazing all round bike, but the suspension is quite basic : a bit choppy at low speed, and lacks control when going for it on a bumpy B road
I'm awaiting the new SP and will immediately put a full exhaust system on it ❤
I currently own a 2018 MT10 SP and was seriously thinking about the new MT09 SP but I am going to wait a little while because I am sure there will be a new MT10 with that same updated looks and electronic package coming out in the next year or two. I just feel I might miss the grunt of a litre CP4 engine plus I do alot of touring
I think the current Mt 10 will be around for a couple of years yet.
Test ride the new 09
@@Mike_P646 yeah i intend too mate its a cracking package altogether been on litre bikes for 30 years now and i am sure within the next 2 years there will be a new MT10 coming out out with all the new electronics and hopefully a bigger tank lol
Chops, knowing you've also praised the Monster SP, which would you say you'd prefer more? I recently traded from a Multi V4 Pikes Peak to a Monster SP. Still in the break-in period so I still don't have a good feeling to how the bike performs but so far seems promising!
I bloody love the mt09, what a fantastic bike with amazing electronics and at a great price aswell 👍
Excellent vid as always buddy, I'd love to see a 3 way with this or the sp version and the duke 990 and the street tripple rs with you and greg, simply awesome
Will see what we can sort 👍
@@LambChopRidesmake it happen! 😎
Yes 💯🙌
The duke is nearly a litre bike - can’t really call that middleweight. And it’s 3k more than the mt
Thanks for the review. Anyone who had a Z900 and now has the MT09 can give some pros and cons of each model?
Important question, for you! This Yamaha MT09 or Ducati Hypermotard 698 mono, for just FUN, and beating the traffic??
Great review ❤. The looks are a lot better Tony Shark would approve. However the wheels would require a makeover for me . Great sound and obviously a lot of fun , as demonstrated by yourself. Looking forward to to the comparison with the KTM . Keep it black side down Chops .
How does its electronics compare to the 890r and street 765rs?
Also, the same for the build quality ?
Yam are the only Japanese manufacture actually looking at the market movement. I'm sure you could dial any quibbles out of the suspension.
Not sure where you found the weather Chopsie but great video as always! Great looking bike too 😄😄
What would you choose the gen 3 SP or the new standard gen 4?
Looks great, but prefer the last gen headlight.
Those levers would have to go though, a nice set of EvoTech black ones would be a must!
For some reason Yamaha changed the clutch lever design on the 24 so nobody has lever sets yet. Thanks Yamaha!
Looks a really nice bike with a great colour. Great review, Loving the wheelie shots, Cheers.
Haha you would love it RR 🤪👍
How would you compare it to the 990 Duke?
Cheers.
What is the range? It only has a 14l tank and that is a serious negative point of this bike
Would you recommend this as a first bike?
I've just ordered one as a first bike, I tried the mt07 and was like I don't like it. so I took this out and absolutely loved it.
Chopsey I have a 21 smcr and was looking at possibly changing for a bike that could offer as much fun but that could be more comfortable at the touring aspect. Is this the bike??
Great bike. I prefer the XSR900.
This or the monster?
Or the xsr900?
after riding this would you skip it just go to MT 10 exhaust ecu flash say DONE ?? or this that good to not get MT10
Hi! I have a question. Between this MT09 2024 & the current XSR900 (not the GP), which one has more aggressive ergonomic riding position? Or which is more relaxed?
Up right position or more relaxed position is very important to know for me. Thank you.
MT-09 is more upright position. But you could put bar risers on the xsr to have same riding position.
Good bike, but won't beat my MT10 (23). But that's a lot of bike for under 10k. I de-catted my mt10, so much better and it's tuned. Bit of pop and bang too.
Why it should? MT10 got another thinks.
Like the look of the Gen 2 best✊🔥
Imagine a kawasaki z900rs cafe body with mto9 engine and rider aids. Perfection
Nah! you want an old 900cc engine in it, I think they deliberately make them underpowered to not compete with their own 1000cc bikes such as the eMpTy-10.
An excellent review as usual. Well Done! from
EBC
How would you compare it to the Ktm 690 smcr?
More aggressive than 1 to 1. So effectively, a quick action throttle.
I will, I've been told it's coming and I think next year. Been told it's a bit special too! 😁
@@LambChopRides Thank you.
Is it comfortable on the wet roads? I live in NI and we are practically fish over here.
Sounds like you need a boat, not a bike 😅
Mr.Chops would you chose the new MT-09 (SP) over the new MT-10 SP as a daily? :)
Hmm tough do love the MT10... As a daily the MT09 probably makes more sense 👍
As an old man I think I'd buy the Tracer9.
When does the SP make it to Europe? I've heard August and I've heard September and I've heard Never.
Yamaha said July / August now.. but it's definitely coming 👍
La mía tiene entrada el 30 de Agosto
It does not feel to osmall for someone your size ?? I am same size and worried about that, that after an hour, would want to jump off it
No feels OK actually 👍
Hey, I just got my MT-09 last week and I'm still breaking it in (760km/470mi). Did you (or anyone else) noticed a slight clacking or rattle sound from the engine if you coldstart your bike? It really only epears if the bike is cold and disapears after just a few secounds... I read in forums that's normal because the oil pressure has to build up, but I still feel insecure... I will visit my dealer next week anyway...
If you pull the clutch in does the noise go away. If yes, no concern. If no, perhaps book it in to be checked out.
Agreed... noticeable change in sound on my mt-09 with the clutch in or out.
I had a 2008 Kawasaki Z1000 that wheelies very easily. You could not roll on full throttle in 1st gear without it wanting to flip over...
That’s almost a perfect naked bike. Like you, I’m 6’2” and after sitting on it, I would only love it for about an hour before I’m stopping to stretch my legs! Will someone please make a naked bike for tall people?!
MT 10 try one
