@@Racelinekarting What's your problem with Tommy? He's a gent and a very warm fellow. Also he's a brilliant guitarist. If anyone can be arrogant its someone with that level of ability.
@@jimmycampbell78 my problem with him? It’s very simple really, he comes across as his own biggest fan. He can’t stop talking about himself, which I know is the point of the interview, but literally he will yatter on for ages once asked a question. Having watched endless interviews with all sorts of players, in my opinion he is just a big head. Technically he’s great on an acoustic guitar, but technically gifted doesnt make a ‘great’ player in my humble opinion. Personally I’d rather listen to the Captain play. It’s just my opinion, I respect yours is different, as I’m sure you do mine. Not sure arrogance is good in anyone.
@@Racelinekarting Honest question. How much do you know about Tommy Emmanuel? I couldn't disagree with your comment more lol. He's literally (I'm not speaking figuratively here) the humblest person I know. The amount of time he dedicates to his fans before shows, after shows, signing autographs and guitars and doing workshops and fundraisers all for free and truly enjoys spreading music and guitar as much as he can. I'm guessing you don't know much about him with your comment that he's great on an "acoustic guitar" when he grew up playing the drums and the electric guitar (which is much easier to play than an acoustic on many different levels).
@@Racelinekarting Your opinion doesn’t sound at all humble. TE is about as humble as it gets if you had any real experience of him on and off the stage.
what an amazing person he is. Tommy is probably one of the finest acoustic guitar player, if not the finest (maybe ever): simple chords, simple melodies and loads of feel. Instead of putting so much effort into creating some nonsense rythmic structures, with unusual harmonies, he's always for the song and the melody. And his songs are absolutely killer to play.
@@soundknight simple not in a technical sense, but melodies that go straight to your head, easy to sing...you can sing along to each one of his pieces and you get how lyrical his style is. Take Angelina and how singable it is...Mombasa or Those who wait...killer to play but those melodies are so catchy, so moving...so good
@@richat1691 as I said earlier years ago, of course his songs are killer to play, there's so much going on in every single tune he performs. But if you think about the melodies they are some of the most beautiful, singable, moving without using complex time signatures or unusual tunings or strange ideas.
Let's face it, there must be hundreds of interviews with Tommy on YT. Surely, this must be the best by a country mile! What a really genuine bloke. Have had the pleasure of meeting him several times and spent a few days with him on a guitar camp in Scotland last year. What you see on this interview is exactly what he's like in person.... Truly generous soul. Remembering now how he nursed me through a duet on the last night of the camp. I was nervous as hell, but he guided me through with grace.
Whenever I see people play better than me I am transfixed, mesmerized and inspired. I've not picked up my guitar for a while but Tommy thank you so much for getting me motivated again. You are bliss👏
I first hear Tommy play in 1975 in Sydney. He was checking guitars out in a shop. By the time he finished the shop was full of guitarists with their jaws on the ground. He was one of the best then.
Got a chance to visit Andertons for the first time just over a week ago, I would have melted into a puddle if Tommy was there. Managed to meet him randomly a few years ago in a Guitar Center in Nashville, true gentleman and the best acoustic guitarist, period. Still got my baby Maton signed by him, love this channel!
Just beautiful As an Aussie Living in the country/bush Playing guitar all my life Saw Tommy play many many times This really resonates Thanks Tommy And thanks Captain
As a kid living a similar life moving around the Aussie bush with my parents in the 60's 70's doing correspondence etc..I must say how much I admire the guy...true Aussie guitar legend..
People may envy that he can play guitar like next to none, but then you have to give it to Tommy especially that his first 15 to 20 years was unbelievably rough - losing his brother sister and brother same year when he was 5 and losing his father when he was 11, and his family living in hand to mouth existence. He has seen both sides of life, that is why he has feet totally grounded and lives a disciplined life. You have to respect Tommy not only for his great guitar playing, but to learn from him how to live life despite hardships and not allowing success to go to ones head. Truly a great man.
Superb interview. You get the sense that he's likely uncomfortable when he doesn't have a guitar in his hands. The fact that he played almost throughout the entire interview, shows how much this is a part of his soul. Absolutely brilliant.
I first saw Tommy and his brother Phil play together as '' The Emmanuel Brothers '' in a very old 18th century pub in Sydney Australia called the Governors Pleasure back in 1978 and it was a great venue to go to on a Friday and Saturday night and was blown away by them, and was a fan from that day on and I'm still his biggest fan as we all are and love him heaps ! Sadly the Pub is no longer there but I have great memories to remember of those days with my friends and just '' loving the music '' Thanks so much Tommy !
I used to have a cassette tape many years ago called “Goldrush:Live at Last”. This was Tommy and Phil’s band in Australia in the 70’s and they were incredible. As he says about Phil in this interview, they were a cohesive unit and at times were one musician. Tremendous. RIP Phil Emmanuel
Tommy is just such a captivating person and a genuine role model. Whether he's playing, talking, brushing his teeth, you can just sit and listen with a smile on your face
I had the distinct honour of being Phil’s live sound engineer for a few years before his untimely death and can say that there’s no one in the ‘professional’ muso world more down to earth, honest, and pleasurable than the Emmanuel family to work for. Vale Phil ‘the wiz’, and monster respect tommy. Love your work brother.
10 seconds into Tommys playing and tears rolled down my face from sheer emotion not jealously. He is beyond amazing with the guitar. I love a lot of guitar players but Tommy really is as one with his instrument. The best Captain meets ever and ive enjoyed a few..

He's inspirational! (although he might bruise your ego and make you want to play drums, trumpet, clarinet or any other musical instrument!) First time I saw him in the 90s I went home, took a long hard look at my strat!.... He plays a mean Telecaster too! :-( nooo! Txs TE, Lee and Andersons!
its not right to say someone is the best guitarist because music is a subjective thing and tends to differ in styles BUT TOMMY EMMANUEL is the best guitarist alive!!!😝
The best is always relative and music is subjective and the spectrum in music is so broad that with 1 single instrument you can have hundreds of specialists in styles. The only thing you can see is the easier it looks ( When performing a very hard to impossible musical piece ) the harder that person has put work into the skill ( In practicing hours ). But Tommy Emmanuel is one of the top guitarists for sure ( Seeing his experience and still to this day practicing every day ).
its not subjective at all have you ever heard a guitar player who was better than another guitar player? OF COURSE YOU HAVE for example, i have been paying forty years i am OBJECTIVELY better than someone who, lets say. has never picked up a guitar in their life so, logicly if some one is better than someone else there must be a best and BTW its tommy emmanuel

One of the first bands I saw in the early 80s was The Emmanuel Brothers at the Bexley North Hotel here in Sydney.
Wasn't it called The James Craig Tav at Birkenhead Point. I grew up in Five dock.
I don't know if Tommy changed the world, but he surely changed mine. I've been listening to his music more than half of my life and it helped me a lot in so many ways, and i couldn't be more gratefull... I had the opportunity to see him live (for the first time) a few days ago in glasgow and it was one of the best days of my life.
“I work harder than everybody else”
Without coming off as arrogant. What a champ
See when I heard that I thought the opposite.
He knows all the chords and can make it cry and sing.
Tommy is the Sultan!
That was George Borowski.... (and still is)
You feel alright when you hear that music ring
wikichris They said an old guitar is all, he can afford
@@redSectorA When he gets up under the lights to play his thing
Condolences to Tommy for the death of his older brother and sister.
@Ben Hackett to my ears phil was better than tommy
obviously that's saying waaay lot
Love that the captain literally cant stop smiling. I've been waiting literally years for this one to happen. Insane
Always smile listening to Tommy E.
Hearing this gentleman play just puts a huge, huge smile on my face
what an amazing person he is. Tommy is probably one of the finest acoustic guitar player, if not the finest (maybe ever): simple chords, simple melodies and loads of feel. Instead of putting so much effort into creating some nonsense rythmic structures, with unusual harmonies, he's always for the song and the melody. And his songs are absolutely killer to play.
simple? you try play that shit it's insanely complex to do
@@tjthegreat7 I think the rest understand what he really meant (focused)
@@soundknight simple not in a technical sense, but melodies that go straight to your head, easy to sing...you can sing along to each one of his pieces and you get how lyrical his style is. Take Angelina and how singable it is...Mombasa or Those who wait...killer to play but those melodies are so catchy, so moving...so good
SIMPLE! you are joking right
@@richat1691 as I said earlier years ago, of course his songs are killer to play, there's so much going on in every single tune he performs. But if you think about the melodies they are some of the most beautiful, singable, moving without using complex time signatures or unusual tunings or strange ideas.
The dynamics in his playing! The percussion! The melody! The technique! Ah man... Tommy is amazing.
Clint well said. Dynamics all day long
Let's face it, there must be hundreds of interviews with Tommy on YT.
Those were some damn expensive chords at the beginning there, awesome.
Lee looks like he's dropped dead on the spot and went straight to guitar heaven :)
Another legend on one of my favourite channels
Just beautiful
As an Aussie
Living in the country/bush
Playing guitar all my life
Saw Tommy play many many times
This really resonates
Thanks Tommy
And thanks Captain
So glad he mentioned the hard work at the very beginning. Tommy is the best.
Hard work AND tremendous sacrifice. That sacrifice, it takes everything; ones entire life, why so few do it. Total respect for Tommy.
What a bloody legend!! A true Aussie icon and just awesome down to earth Bloke. Thank you Captain. That's made my night. 🇦🇺🙌🏻🤘🏻
As a kid living a similar life moving around the Aussie bush with my parents in the 60's 70's doing correspondence etc..I must say how much I admire the guy...true Aussie guitar legend..
Tommy Emmanuel is not just a guitarist, he is a storyteller
People may envy that he can play guitar like next to none, but then you have to give it to Tommy especially that his first 15 to 20 years was unbelievably rough - losing his brother sister and brother same year when he was 5 and losing his father when he was 11, and his family living in hand to mouth existence. He has seen both sides of life, that is why he has feet totally grounded and lives a disciplined life. You have to respect Tommy not only for his great guitar playing, but to learn from him how to live life despite hardships and not allowing success to go to ones head. Truly a great man.
Until you see Tommy live you have no idea how good he is, seriously.
I loved Tommy's playing for 30 years then saw him live ,mind blowing live.
Superb interview. You get the sense that he's likely uncomfortable when he doesn't have a guitar in his hands. The fact that he played almost throughout the entire interview, shows how much this is a part of his soul. Absolutely brilliant.
Lee’s face at about 1minute is gold. Like he was simultaneously in awe and a little bit offended someone could be so good.
One of the greatest of all time.
Even more amazing than Tommy’s playing is that 4 jerks gave this a thumbs down wtf ????
They must be losers who don't love music.
Best guitarist you've ever had on and ever will have on
Until John Mayer comes on :P
I used to have a cassette tape many years ago called “Goldrush:Live at Last”. This was Tommy and Phil’s band in Australia in the 70’s and they were incredible. As he says about Phil in this interview, they were a cohesive unit and at times were one musician. Tremendous. RIP Phil Emmanuel
Tommy is just such a captivating person and a genuine role model. Whether he's playing, talking, brushing his teeth, you can just sit and listen with a smile on your face
This man is a walking legend we still have among us. A class act.
James Dalton I’ve met Phil and he was outstanding guitarist & humble... much respect
His song Lewis & Clark is one of my most favorite songs I’ve ever listened to.
10 seconds into Tommys playing and tears rolled down my face from sheer emotion not jealously. He is beyond amazing with the guitar. I love a lot of guitar players but Tommy really is as one with his instrument. The best Captain meets ever and ive enjoyed a few..
I just saw Tommy for the first time last week, I've always admired him. What an incredible guitar player.
It's like watching a magician teach magic....
Gotta love lees pure childish grin during all of this interview,
Possibly the best captain meets to date.
Simply one of the greatest guitar players of all time. And also someone who knows how to entertain an audience.
Finally, Lee!
You get the best guitarist in the world on!
Sit back and watch in Awe!..
He really is that good!
Guitarists out there, if you ever get a chance... go see him live in concert!
He's inspirational! (although he might bruise your ego and make you want to play drums, trumpet, clarinet or any other musical instrument!)
First time I saw him in the 90s I went home, took a long hard look at my strat!....
He plays a mean Telecaster too! :-( nooo!
Txs TE, Lee and Andersons!
Went to Tommy Emanuel guitar camp in 2017. One of the best weeks of my life. Love his playing.
its not right to say someone is the best guitarist because music is a subjective thing and tends to differ in styles BUT TOMMY EMMANUEL is the best guitarist alive!!!😝
Subjectively, it's not right to say that someone is 'the best guitarist alive'- they don't exi... TOMMY EMMANUEL IS THE BEST GUITARIST ALIVE!!!
Sorry. Martin Taylor is.
Yes, I think you are pretty much right ALL of the way through that post. ;-)
its not subjective at all
have you ever heard a guitar player who was better than another guitar player?
OF COURSE YOU HAVE
for example, i have been paying forty years
i am OBJECTIVELY better than someone who, lets say. has never picked up a guitar in their life
so, logicly if some one is better than someone else
there must be a best
and BTW its tommy emmanuel
It really doesn't get any better than Tommy Emmanuel !
One of the all time best, a true living legend
Isn't this just nice. A lot more refreshing and pleasant than distorted shredding. Much class!
If I had to describe his playing in one word I would use a MESMERIZING.
Tommy Emmanuel is one of the best persons in the music industry! Hearing him play or hearing what he says or does always warms my heart!
I wish from the bottom of my heart that we have more people like him. He is not just an incredible guitar player but also an incredible person! I love everything about this person and wish Tommy Emmanuel the best! May he be joyful and healthy for many many more years!
He is just the best! Words cannot express that.... Tommy if you notice that: I adore you and your work with all my heart, your music and joyfullness touches me deeply and it worms my heart! You are loved by people who do not even know you personally... Nor do you know them
You are the man!
These people are ALL great people to "Meet", but the Captain is the glue in these interviews. So accomodating and vulnerably curious and it just brings the best out of the guests....Cap is obviously good people...
Real ones know this guy is a GOAT contender, at least where acoustic is concerned
Anybody else forget to breathe during " Somewhere over the Rainbow" ?
To me his is THE defining version of that song. It manages to put all the heartache, heartbreak and joy of that song into pure sound without lyrics.
I’m not at that part yet, now I can’t wait for it
It made me cry.
I wish I could do ANYTHING as good as Tommy plays guitar! He is the best of the best! 🎶🎸
One man orchestra Tommy E!!
One of the best entertainers. Saw him last month and I will go again.
Tommy signed my Little Martin and sang happy birthday on my 70th birthday. A Meet and Greet I will never forget ! He has a sincerity and made me feel like this mattered . There was another person there who was a Tommy follower for his shows. I had trouble playing the strings Tommy touched like a teenager !!
