I'm in a similar spot as you. The one thing I'd suggest is really make sure you're on the exact balls of your feet. One way to help get the correct feel is to try some stationary jumps and suck your knees up and do the ninja kick more between each try. A lot of your first try's seem to have the best timing--make sure not to tense up and try too hard. Try to make it feel effortless.
Thanks for the great advice! Yeah, I also felt like it was going pretty good in the beginning and then I had several attempts where I just felt super uncomfortable. The board started behaving very differently compared to my normal ollies and that made me hesitate quite a bit. It got a bit better towards the end, but not very much. That is often the case with my oliies, that I am not really comfortable with the trick. I think making the ollie effortless is key. As it is now I am using a ton of force, which is a clear sign that my technique is off. I will try focusing more on being on the balls of my feet. Thanks again! 😊
I´m 36 and returning to skating since i was like 28 when i stopped doing it for whatever reason and i have the same problem, but, i noticed something now that im skating again and i try to not hurt myself, i am understanding the feet position and movement, what i do now is to simulate the trick, for example, when i wad younger i never landed a nollie heelflip, but now i can do it since i been doing that "simulation" before trying it. What i do is "DO" the trick without the board, so my feet get used to it, i think it is related to muscular memomy or something like that. I`m having a hard time with the ollie but i feel i improved with this "technique", now i can jump bigger objects like a bench, i guess ill keep practicing since i`ts the only way i see i`m improving. Cheers from Mexico my friend.
I've been skating for 17 years now and I always give this advice to people I see trying some ollies and not getting it right: leave all your weight on the front foot before the ollie e focus on jumping out of the front foot, the back foot doesn't need a lot of force to pop high, it's all about jumping high with the front foot and pulling your back knee to your chest
I think we all need to work on the ollie in some way. Ollie work is what I'm thinking of doing when I finally get bk on my board. Been ill for 4 weeks now . I'm getting over the illness now but I have pulled or strained my side while coughing so need to get over that now as well. I'm having a great 2024 so far lol.
My ollies aren’t good either dude. I feel ya! I also get the same disconnect with my back foot. Many of yours look better than mine. I think we both need to bend down lower and snap up quicker. I always feel like I’m WAY bent down and when I watch footage I’m not
I will check out my own video files and see how much I bend down, because I have no idea! I have actually never thought about that! Thanks for the advice man! 😊
Your front foot pushes the board away too soon when your ollies start to gain height. This causes the back foot to disconnect. I have the same issue sometimes. The way I try to correct it is to think about bringing my front foot higher and closer to my back leg BEFORE leveling out the board. Almost as if I wanted to touch the inside of my back knee with the underside of my front foot. That forces the board to get more vertical and keeps my body weight over the board better.
Yeah, I have started to realize just that. I have been so super focused on my front foot drag, because I belived that the tail would follow my back foot if I just dragged my front foot towards the nose hard enough. I actually tried your tip about thinking that the inside of the back knee almost touching the front foot. I didn't have that much success with it, but that's often the case when you change your technique, and especially when it has something to do with timing. I will keep at it, because I really think that's the way to go. I actually realized that when I compared my own ollie, frame by frame, with my daughter's ollie. Her ollie popped up in a much steeper angle/more certical, and her foot was glued to the tail all the way, compared to my ollie that popped in a much more mellow angle, and where my back foot disconnected almost immediately after the pop. As I said, I will keep trying this and hopefully it will get my ollie into a better shape. Thanks a lot for the great advice! 😊👍
Try moving your back foot closer to the bolts in your starting stance (in the “pocket”. The back foot needs to get traction off the grip to stay sucked up and and tight. This way of popping from the pocket lets you have more control turning into tricks. Hope this helps. And most importantly keep skating and having fun!!!
It is your front foot, needs to run parrallel with your back foot. Do not point your toe. Also a tid bit of extra info: the closer your front foot is to your bsck foot the more power you are going to have but you lose stability, ahh a flat ground melon is now possible. Hint do not reach for the board let the board come to your hand in the ollie. Work on calf muscles. Gain power. Also when you reach a 32 inch ollie it is significantly harder to gain inches beyond that on flat ground. That is due to board length, you would be using the grip tape to drag up the board higher.
I will try to keep my front foot more parallel to my back foot. I have actually not thought 2 much about that! Melon is a dream trick for me! Thanks for the advice! 🙏😊
Try speed up(not more power) to pop, and it help you make slide more fast. You need slide forward directional is much faster, like you want board to throw out away. As the result feel more resistance and grip from board. If to see much more slow mo videos, you can loss focus how to make trick in dinamic.
The reason for the turning board is your hips. You’re not parallel to the board when crouching. Work on that and the board will stay straight in the air.
Yeah, quite possibly. It's weird though because I never have that problem otherwise with the board turning when doing the ollie. I probably tried to do it the Dan way with too much force and too little teqhnique! 😂
step 1 - get you front feet a little bit closer and paralel to your back feet, ollie some times in this new form to get used, also pay attention to the way you open your shoulders, maybe try to mimic paul rodriguez cross arm thing to help on your balance pre and during the pop. step 2 - slow down your font foot slide so you can get more air time, this will give the board more time to catch up to you back foot also, you, youll know your doing it correctly if the board is going a lot more vertical before it gets back horizontal, train a LOT like these sou you fix your timing, step 3 - at this pont you should have a pretty decent ollie, NOW you can try to get then boned, go for dan's tips here.
It's cool because much of what you are suggesting I have been thinking about for the last few days - especially the part of chilling a bit more with the front foot. I think that I have been so focused of leveling out the board, that it has messed up the timing of the trick. It's also cool that you mentioned the part of getting the board more vertical, because just the other day I compared my ollie to my daughter's ollie and her board was way more vertical than mine. I wonderd why it looked that way, and I think that's due to my aggresive front foot. I was actually out today, and tried to focus less on my front foot and focus more on allowing the board to get more vertical and I think it resulted in a better ollie. I also tried the rodriguez cross arms. I think that's a smart way of making sure that you keep your shoulders parallel, but it's often difficult when you try to adapt something new like that. It's probably gonna take me a couple of sessions before that starts feeling natural. Thanks for the great advice man! 🙏☺
@@fd_skate im happy you're getting results from that, ollie is probably the trick i worked and still work most to get proper, the x thing is something i remember doing when i was struggling with my body acting on his own but is something extra to keep track so it def will make things harder at the start, if you dont want to adapt that you can just focus on the other stuff, do 1 thing at a time and maybe later try to focus on the shoulders corrections
I think the swinging shoulders is a great thing to do, I just need to do it enough so it doesn't kill my balance! 😁 I actually tried it with my treflips and it's really good for keeping the shoulders in line with the board.
Your bad ollies make my good ollies look bad lol. But as far as disconnect goes i get it. Im in the same boat and feel like i try to level out the board with my front foot too fast sometimes. So i have wait for the board to get more vertical height before i start to level out
Yeah, I have also started to suspect that I try to level out the board too quickly. I have started focusing on just lifting my front foot and THEN pushing it out. I am not sure, but it feels like it can make a positive difference! Good luck to us both, fixing our ollies! ☺👍
Ohh...I really wish that I could blame the trucks , but I think (not sure though) that the fault lies with me! I think my teqhnique just sucks 😂 and I am troubleshooting that damn trick pretty much every time I skate. I think I have gotten so uses of doing the trick badly, so it's stuck in my muscle memory!
Yeah, I also think that my issues could be related to the timing of the trick. That sucks, because those damn things are hard to change! 😅 But it's definitely something that is still worth playing around with! Thanks for the advice! 🙏

heard this from skateiq:
don't kick forward just do a hippy jump and bring your front foot up to let the board level out
Definitely worth trying! Thanks for the advice! 🙏😊
I wish I could help but my Ollies are terrible. Keep trying. I’m sure you can find that little technique that will make it happen for you. 👊
Thanks man! I will keep the fight going! 😊
