Pronounced Bow gey Hole I am assuming that was a typo in your description of its origins. It was actually hewn out of the rock by the convicts in 1819 for Major James Morriset the Commandant to use as his private baths. That surf was a little too rough for you to swim when you were there but I have seen it a lot worse with waves crashing against the stairs of those cliffs. Newcastle is Australias 2nd oldest city there is a lot of history here and in the towns further up the Hunter Valley like Maitlaind, Morpeth, Singleton etc.. Nobbys was originally an island before Governor Macquarie ordered it to connected to the mainland by convict labour with the result that the build up of sand meant Nobbys Beach became the only man made beach in Australia. The builders removed about 27mtrs off its height in 1836 quarrying the stone to complete the breakwall. Australias first export was coal dug from exposed seams in 1799 which was transported to India to trade for food for the struggling settlement in Sydney. Newcastle in the 1797 to 1799 period was known as a hellhole because the very worst convicts there sent up there from Sydney as punishment to dig coal. The first permanent settlement was in 1801 which was called Kings Town it was a base set up to mine coal and cut timber it failed after a only a year. They returned 2 years later and renamed the settlement Coal River or Kingstown until finally renaming it Newcastle after Newcastle in England also a famous coal city. A lot of the suburbs of Newcastle Australia are actually named after towns around Newcastle in England. Hope you enjoyed your time visiting this city a lot of tourists bypass it because Newcastle once had a reputation for being a dirty industrialised city before the BHP steelworks closed - nothing could be further from the truth today...
