Some metals are REQUIRED in trace amounts for bodily functions, or you are functionally compromised and sometimes die prematurely. Lead appears to be purely detrimental, but I expect in small enough quantities even lead has little to no deleterious effect. The body actually can dispose of lead very slowly, but it takes very little to grossly overwhelm this minor capability. Don't ingest or inhale lead, it's bad. Medicines are ALL toxins (look it up), and that is why they kill you when grossly overdosed, and why in some cases that is a VERY VERY small dose. Some require single digit MILLIONTHS of a gram level, where 454 grams equals one pound. That means some can kill with single doses of 1/100,000,000 pounds (or one one hundred millionth of a pound), that is a damned small amount, a weight that were I to drop in in your hand with your eyes closed you wouldn't remotely know when I did. It's equivalent weight to a piece of regular notebook paper about 1/64" on a side, if I did the quick math right. THAT is a toxin/poison (they are not necessarily the same thing).
Sugar of Lead, or Lead Acetate was created as a byproduct of Romans cooking sweetening herbs for their wine in pots made of Lead. This may explain what drove Caligula mad. He loved his wine sweetened with this 'defruiter' as I believed it was called.
Defrutum. I believe it is very very similar to the Sapa mentioned in the video, but the preparation method differs slightly. It wasn't just Caligula, if my history serves it was something of a craze, and possibly responsible for some of the more... interesting events in Roman high society during the time of its use.
A tip from one amateur chemist to a real chemist. If you get some kind of very smooth, almost "fatty" tupperwave (usually the cheapest stuff, cause it's got more fatty plastic), you will be able to evaporate the crystals and later on just lift them up, because the plastic trays work like teflon, it doesn't stick. It's done miracles for me, and I would never use anything but cheap fake-tupperware stuff now for my crystallizations, at least if I want to be able to pick my crystals up easily after the water has evaporated.

I remember once in my chem class in college I made a solution of lead nitrate and stuck the beaker in the lab drawar. We went away on summer break and I came back to my same drawar which still had the beaker in it fully evaporated and had about 3 huge almost purely clear lead nitrate crystals along with many smaller ones. It was so beautiful I had to put them in a test tube with a cork and took it home. Sadly I think someone stole them where I had them displayed, maybe thinking it was quartz. Well, let's hope they didn't open it and play with the crystals...
"Glacial acetic acid", for those wondering, is just undiluted acetic acid. It's called that because its melting point is about 17℃, so it starts solidifying into crystals at close to room temperature.
Lead was used in pipes, too, but mostly because lead pipes are easy to bend and work with because lead is soft. It wasn't that much of a problem, because most of the time a layer of chalk formed on the inside of the pipes that stopped the lead from getting into the water.

professional crystal growing involves thermostat and constantly rotating seed crystal...but I think this could be done homemade...if you leave the crystal just sitting you will never get nice results
NileRed: there were _many_ downsides to moving the crystals around, and literally no upsides to it. So I moved them, and had a lot of work fixing the mess. That tracks.
There's a trick where you repeatedly re-heat a solution with smaller crystals in it until you just dissolve the tiny ones so only the larger ones will carry on growing. It's time-consuming, but a fine way to grow large, "flawless" crystals. I do not know the term in English and cannot immediately find it on google.
NileRed never tried it; don't have the patience myself ;-) if memory serves, it exploits the kinetics of dissolution because of the comparatively larger surface area of smaller crystals. The term (as old as the alchemists apparently) in dutch is "digereren" but I don't know/can't find the word in english.

Drakkar Calethiel or after school in my case :) Being interested mainly in organic chemistry, I rarely have something interesting to quickly do in one afternoon, as most things require quite some time... This is a nice and easy thing to do. I might use some 30% hydrogen peroxide though, but I know where to find it :) I wish you luck and have fun!
Colin Ries Thanks! Organic chemistry is very interesting but often takes hours to complete. I have to do it with 20% h2o2 because it's the highest I could get over a good friend and with 90% acetic acid.
Drakkar Calethiel I haven't found lead oxide yet, but it appears to be the superior method. I got myself 500g of lead metal a few weeks back, so I want to use that... The only days I can really do organic chemistry is on Fridays and Saturdays because I can start in the early afternoon and continue working until late in the morning. I have had 16 hour sessions in the basement quite often, starting at 3 in the afternoon on Friday and working straight through until Saturday morning at 7 or 8. It's really difficult to go to bed when it's bright outside and the birds make noise, but you get accustomed to it :P Are you planning to grow crystals?
People have always been kinky, they've just been more open about it the last half century because of the sexual revolution. I personally think the sexual revolution was a detrimental step the Western world took, but I'm not here to dictate to you what to think.
When I was at primary school in the early 1980s someone discovered that the drainpipes had a pleasantly sweet taste to them. Soon enough a drainpipe-licking craze swept through the whole school and during recess groups of children could be seen huddled around each drainpipe. Sadly, drainpipes aren't painted with lead compounds any more so kids these days are being denied all the free sweetness that we all took for granted when we were their age.

Why are you against the recreational use of synthetic drugs? Crystal meth is pretty bad, sure, though I still feel people should have the right to make bad decisions if they want to, but there are plenty of very safe synthetic drugs, like LSD.
Because synthetic/semisynthetic psychoactive drugs you getting off the street are mostly impure, and the biggest danger is not the drug itself. However, the organic drugs such as cannabis is a different story, all you really need is a visual observation to determine the quality. In any case, it is true every human should be given a right to make a bad decision that does not affect anyone apart from the person who makes this decision.
Well, I'm glad we can agree on the right to make your own bad decisions at least. The purity is a real problem for many drugs, though with a bit of knowledge it's not really that hard to purify further to a safe degree. For LSD in particular, though, the impurity isn't really a big concern (assuming it really is LSD, which can be verified easily through reagent testing or even just taste), since the amount on a given tab is so incredibly tiny. Supposing one had a way to reliably know that the product was suitably pure, perhaps due to prohibition ending: Would you still be against the use of synthetic drugs under these circumstances? And how do you feel about drugs that are natural, but must be (or simply are) extracted from the plant matter through chemical means, like DMT?
Psychoactive substances is one of my favourite subject, I don't talk about it very often though as due to its illegal status majority will consider you a criminal just because of your interest. What you are saying is very true with little knowledge in chemistry it is quite easy to rid of cutting agents, and coloured impurities from street bought drugs. However, is usually not the biggest concern and to get the purity to 95%+-, it takes allot, and you can never make it 100% no matter what you do. Now, let's imagine hypothetically a drug user who has some knowledge in chemistry and no financial problems. That person is willing to lose 70% of the dope to get it to 95% purity. What is this remaining 5% of impurities and what long term affect will it do to your body? So yeah, buying drugs off the street is not the way to go even if you are an intelligent enough to know how to purify alkaloids such as cocaine or methamphetamine, etc. When it comes to LSD, I can't imagine how one can purify it? Knowing that one hit is around 100-200 micrograms one gramme would make 5000-10000 hits. It will probably cost as much as the two-story house in the centre of London to buy the workable quantity of LSD for purification and who willing to lose even 1%? About organic drugs such as DMT, cocaine, morphine, etc. These may be just as impure due to chemicals used for the extraction. Of course, if you are a good chemist and do extraction yourself you may get a relatively pure product. However, without costly equipment, you can never get it to pharm grade. In my opinion, the war on drugs is the biggest mistake humanity has ever done. People use psychoactive substances because they have particular problems that caused by some events in their life or some genetical mental defects, and the substances are the only thing that can stop these individuals from suffering. From my research, I know that drug addicts are only dangerous when they are severely addicted, and they can't get what they need. Take food from an average individual for a few days, and that person will be as dangerous to society as a drug addict that can't satisfy its addiction. So we all have an addiction to food, and if food abused, it can also lead to death or ruin someone's life(overweight). Perhaps I am crazy, but I can clearly see all the benefits from legalisation of psychoactive substances. The improvement of the economy, reduction of crime and death rates related to drugs, increase in employment and new areas of research for science. Negative sides? There will always be individuals who willing to abuse drugs despite the harm.
I wasn't saying you can purify LSD, it would probably be among the hardest to purify, especially given how fragile of a molecule it is. But with only around 100ug per tab (more often around 40 nowadays if you get it off the street), whatever impurities are there are likely in such a tiny amount they're not likely to hurt you. The other thing is that it's so hard to make, anyone with the capacity to make it has the chemistry knowledge to produce a reasonably pure product. The solvents and such used for DMT extraction (And I suspect the extraction of other natural product drugs, though I don't know much about the details) are unlikely to leave many impurities in the end product if done by someone remotely competent. Most of them will evaporate completely. Any impurities in the product would have already been in the plant material, and the most common natural source has no known toxins. There's also some attempts at using solvents that are relatively safe to consume like limonene so that if any did remain, it wouldn't be an issue. I completely agree with you that all drugs should be legal, of course. I imagine that was clear from my comments.

For one summer when I was in my senior year of high school I worked at a winery. At the winery I worked in the part where they stored the freshly pressed wine in large stainless steel vats. one of my jobs was to clean those Vats after they transferred the wine into barrels. When I was cleaning the Vats I found that there was always this yellow crystal substance in the bottom of the the vat. when I first saw it I thought it was sulfur but it didn't smell like sulfur. It stank like battery acid. It would instantly give me a headache if I had to handle it. I eventually refused to do that job because I couldn't get within arm's reach of the stuff without getting a headache from it. I asked to use a respirator . The company didn't provide a respirators for the job. It was a small family-owned business. I wonder if that substance was lead oxide like what was shown in this video at 01:15.
I figured it was some other mineral that was in the ground that the grapes vines we are absorbing through the roots. None of my other coworkers knew what it was either. We all joked about it being some type of chemical that was left over from the fertilizers or insecticides that were sprayed on the plants.

Quick question.....wy do acetates tend to supersaturate without crystallising compared to other salts? Works for sodium acetate and such but is this generalised to other metal acetates? What about other carboxylates? Interesting.
It didn't. Due to the water being mineral rich, a layer of limestone would form inside the pipe preventing contact with lead and water. That and the water was constantly flowing too quickly and would not gather any lead from the metal. It has to be still for the lead to enter the water.

Rome's tap water is estimated to have higher lead concentration than natural sources by a noticable amount, just not to a degree of severe poisoning It would gather lead from pipes, and no it doesn't have to be still for that to happen. It just has less time for lead to accumulate per liter of water, which is different from none at all

professional crystal growing involves thermostat and constantly rotating seed crystal...but I think this could be done homemade...if you leave the crystal just sitting you will never get nice results

I love those inorganic chem videos. They're simple, clear and the result is always a ~90% yield and great purity. They're satisfying.
There's a trick where you repeatedly re-heat a solution with smaller crystals in it until you just dissolve the tiny ones so only the larger ones will carry on growing. It's time-consuming, but a fine way to grow large, "flawless" crystals.

NileRed never tried it; don't have the patience myself ;-) if memory serves, it exploits the kinetics of dissolution because of the comparatively larger surface area of smaller crystals. The term (as old as the alchemists apparently) in dutch is "digereren" but I don't know/can't find the word in english.

Being interested mainly in organic chemistry, I rarely have something interesting to quickly do in one afternoon, as most things require quite some time... This is a nice and easy thing to do. I might use some 30% hydrogen peroxide though, but I know where to find it :)

Colin Ries Thanks! Organic chemistry is very interesting but often takes hours to complete. I have to do it with 20% h2o2 because it's the highest I could get over a good friend and with 90% acetic acid.
Or I just get some lead oxide. Its pretty cheap so I don't have to waste my precious peroxide.
Drakkar Calethiel I haven't found lead oxide yet, but it appears to be the superior method. I got myself 500g of lead metal a few weeks back, so I want to use that...
The only days I can really do organic chemistry is on Fridays and Saturdays because I can start in the early afternoon and continue working until late in the morning. I have had 16 hour sessions in the basement quite often, starting at 3 in the afternoon on Friday and working straight through until Saturday morning at 7 or 8. It's really difficult to go to bed when it's bright outside and the birds make noise, but you get accustomed to it :P

When I was at primary school in the early 1980s someone discovered that the drainpipes had a pleasantly sweet taste to them. Soon enough a drainpipe-licking craze swept through the whole school and during recess groups of children could be seen huddled around each drainpipe. Sadly, drainpipes aren't painted with lead compounds any more so kids these days are being denied all the free sweetness that we all took for granted when we were their age.

Lead acetate is awesome compound, especially due to its use in the clandestine chemistry. Even though I am aginst the recreational use of synthetic drugs such as crystal meth but since the breaking bad show I love to research this topic. I was kind of hoping you cover a limited info about its use in the production of P2P, knowing it is perhaps the easiest route from PAA that does not require any Acetic anhydride. Since Chem player stopped making videos, you are the most informative chemist on youtube. Keep up the great work.
I wish I were living in Canada or another country where I won't have to limit myself in my chemistry hobby. Unfortunately, here in the UK stereotypical authorities will consider you as a terrorist or a commercial drug manufacturer for such a hobby.
Why are you against the recreational use of synthetic drugs? Crystal meth is pretty bad, sure, though I still feel people should have the right to make bad decisions if they want to, but there are plenty of very safe synthetic drugs, like LSD.
Because synthetic/semisynthetic psychoactive drugs you getting off the street are mostly impure, and the biggest danger is not the drug itself. However, the organic drugs such as cannabis is a different story, all you really need is a visual observation to determine the quality.
In any case, it is true every human should be given a right to make a bad decision that does not affect anyone apart from the person who makes this decision.
Well, I'm glad we can agree on the right to make your own bad decisions at least. The purity is a real problem for many drugs, though with a bit of knowledge it's not really that hard to purify further to a safe degree. For LSD in particular, though, the impurity isn't really a big concern (assuming it really is LSD, which can be verified easily through reagent testing or even just taste), since the amount on a given tab is so incredibly tiny.
Supposing one had a way to reliably know that the product was suitably pure, perhaps due to prohibition ending: Would you still be against the use of synthetic drugs under these circumstances? And how do you feel about drugs that are natural, but must be (or simply are) extracted from the plant matter through chemical means, like DMT?
Psychoactive substances is one of my favourite subject, I don't talk about it very often though as due to its illegal status majority will consider you a criminal just because of your interest.
What you are saying is very true with little knowledge in chemistry it is quite easy to rid of cutting agents, and coloured impurities from street bought drugs. However, is usually not the biggest concern and to get the purity to 95%+-, it takes allot, and you can never make it 100% no matter what you do. Now, let's imagine hypothetically a drug user who has some knowledge in chemistry and no financial problems. That person is willing to lose 70% of the dope to get it to 95% purity. What is this remaining 5% of impurities and what long term affect will it do to your body? So yeah, buying drugs off the street is not the way to go even if you are an intelligent enough to know how to purify alkaloids such as cocaine or methamphetamine, etc. When it comes to LSD, I can't imagine how one can purify it? Knowing that one hit is around 100-200 micrograms one gramme would make 5000-10000 hits. It will probably cost as much as the two-story house in the centre of London to buy the workable quantity of LSD for purification and who willing to lose even 1%? About organic drugs such as DMT, cocaine, morphine, etc. These may be just as impure due to chemicals used for the extraction. Of course, if you are a good chemist and do extraction yourself you may get a relatively pure product. However, without costly equipment, you can never get it to pharm grade. In my opinion, the war on drugs is the biggest mistake humanity has ever done. People use psychoactive substances because they have particular problems that caused by some events in their life or some genetical mental defects, and the substances are the only thing that can stop these individuals from suffering. From my research, I know that drug addicts are only dangerous when they are severely addicted, and they can't get what they need. Take food from an average individual for a few days, and that person will be as dangerous to society as a drug addict that can't satisfy its addiction. So we all have an addiction to food, and if food abused, it can also lead to death or ruin someone's life(overweight). Perhaps I am crazy, but I can clearly see all the benefits from legalisation of psychoactive substances. The improvement of the economy, reduction of crime and death rates related to drugs, increase in employment and new areas of research for science. Negative sides? There will always be individuals who willing to abuse drugs despite the harm.
I wasn't saying you can purify LSD, it would probably be among the hardest to purify, especially given how fragile of a molecule it is. But with only around 100ug per tab (more often around 40 nowadays if you get it off the street), whatever impurities are there are likely in such a tiny amount they're not likely to hurt you. The other thing is that it's so hard to make, anyone with the capacity to make it has the chemistry knowledge to produce a reasonably pure product.
The solvents and such used for DMT extraction (And I suspect the extraction of other natural product drugs, though I don't know much about the details) are unlikely to leave many impurities in the end product if done by someone remotely competent. Most of them will evaporate completely. Any impurities in the product would have already been in the plant material, and the most common natural source has no known toxins.
There's also some attempts at using solvents that are relatively safe to consume like limonene so that if any did remain, it wouldn't be an issue.
I completely agree with you that all drugs should be legal, of course. I imagine that was clear from my comments.

For one summer when I was in my senior year of high school I worked at a winery.
At the winery I worked in the part where they stored the freshly pressed wine in large stainless steel vats.
one of my jobs was to clean those Vats after they transferred the wine into barrels. When I was cleaning the Vats I found that there was always this yellow crystal substance in the bottom of the the vat. when I first saw it I thought it was sulfur but it didn't smell like sulfur. It stank like battery acid.
It would instantly give me a headache if I had to handle it. I eventually refused to do that job because I couldn't get within arm's reach of the stuff without getting a headache from it. I asked to use a respirator . The company didn't provide a respirators for the job. It was a small family-owned business.
I wonder if that substance was lead oxide like what was shown in this video at 01:15.
I figured it was some other mineral that was in the ground that the grapes vines we are absorbing through the roots. None of my other coworkers knew what it was either. We all joked about it being some type of chemical that was left over from the fertilizers or insecticides that were sprayed on the plants.

Quick question.....wy do acetates tend to supersaturate without crystallising compared to other salts? Works for sodium acetate and such but is this generalised to other metal acetates? What about other carboxylates? Interesting.

Romans also used lead plumbing, which slowly poisoned them, but made their water sweet to taste.
It didn't. Due to the water being mineral rich, a layer of limestone would form inside the pipe preventing contact with lead and water. That and the water was constantly flowing too quickly and would not gather any lead from the metal. It has to be still for the lead to enter the water.
@@voidedwinner1478 you're close, but not on the money. Rome's tap water is estimated to have higher lead concentration than natural sources by a noticable amount, just not to a degree of severe poisoning
It would gather lead from pipes, and no it doesn't have to be still for that to happen. It just has less time for lead to accumulate per liter of water, which is different from none at all
