Mr. Buckley floods the stage with musical emotion so intense reminds me of Son House but nobody could match him. Great video. No words can describe how great it was growing up with this music. Thank you.
Love these old performances---back when guys actually played their instruments----we don't need no stinking computer music. But I am happy to be able to view it on my computer---if I had a time machine I'd go back and be in it "live". thanks for posting.
Icing on the cake: Could you make it easier to access by time stamping the individual artists and the name of the tunes. Cherry on top: Names of the accompanying musicians.
It's quite crazy to think that the last time i saw these videos of Zephyr and John Mayall's Blues Breakers was the very night 50 some years ago sitting in front of a black and white TV in Munroe Falls, Ohio when these were first aired on Channel 25 (what we called educational TV) from Cleveland, and they were brand new. One of those nights was the night i fell in love with Candy Givens' kick-ass voice.
All great performances - thanks for uploading. Never knew Dion had a folk side. He was the biggest surprise for me. Never heard of Jam Factory until yesterday when I watched Parts 1 and 3, but they were amazing.
@@andydixon2980 You have probably heard "I Just Want To Celebrate"... correct? RARE EARTH IN CONCERT (1971) is great. They also played the California Jam in 1974. There are TH-cam videos of that, as well. They were on Motown's "Rock" label...also called Rare Earth.
@@jazzpunk I knew of them but never really paid all that much attention to them. They are unreal... What talent and the Drummer still sounds and plays the same its unreal.... I bought the records and the book this week LOL ...
I think that even the most jaded music critic is in ecstasy watching THE SHOW. @Clark Santee you have opened the door for a new generation to appreciate the wealth of creation that had sprung forth from America during those pivotal years. Be proud America, you beautiful, artistic people, and Keep The Faith
Zephyr - best damn little band no one ever heard of. (I wonder why Tommy Bolin's guitar was so low in volume. Maybe because of running it through that effects box? And if that keyboardist pulled out one more instrument I think I'd of shit.)
Wow, my old roommate did the equipment for them and I use to travel with Rare Earth for the Michigan shows. Great to see them young. I only knew the older version of them.
This channel is greatness. Such cool stuff to see/hear these artists actually play live, no lip sync, just raw performances. This almost never happens today. Even when it looks as if a band is playing live, odds are, that's not the case. Thanks for posting these videos.
Definitely worth dusting off. These are some classic, early performances. I knew about The Show because I'm a lifelong GFR fan, and knew they performed some of their early tunes there. Very cool to see--especially as a Pennsylvanian!
I would love to see more footage of Dion from this era. After the success of Abraham, Martin and John ca. 1968, he recorded several albums in the singer-songwriter vein that did not perform as well commercially, but are quite good. The solo acoustic LP Sit Down Old Friend is worth seeking out. Without overdubs or a backing band, Dion's voice and guitar playing really shine.
A real bummer as the Brooklyn Bridge perform a song that was only a B Side to a 45 called "He's Not A Happy Man" which can be heard at 51:37. This didn't appear on any of their 4 LPs and only the B Side of a 45 called: Free As The Wind which was from their first LP. This single was released 2 years later on Buddah cat#162.
Thank you so much for sharing these hidden gems of music history! Have always wondered how many local TV stations had performances of artist that ended up being stored away after the original airings and forgotten about, until a studio tech got a hold of them or made copies to keep and now released after all these years to share with the world... These videos look in such good condition and resolution, are they from the original 3/4 inch tapes?
Clark, Thank you for the uploads. Amazing footage on these four compilations, especially Tim Buckley, Phil Ochs, Dion, Mountain, Amboy Dukes and GFR. Any chance that the whole series will see the light of day?
OMG! I'm a 74 year old retired pro-drummer and I've been watching The Show I-IV. Bands I've heard of and bought their LPs but never seen on stage is a godsend. I just finished watching Country Joe & the Fish drummer do a great solo. Are any of these shows available for downloading? I looked through bit torrent but didn't find any. I spent my early days playing in the mid-west and the southern states so I missed out on this show. Too bad. Thank you for uploading this. Warms my heart. . . .Peace
Curtis, Thank you for your nice comment. I am thrilled with all the good responses that have come forth from releasing these performances on TH-cam. In just a few of weeks the compilations have received over 11,000 views from music fans from all over the world, and produced over 200 responses. The only complaint I've received is for misspelling folk singer Phil Ochs name. The comments very much support the belief that people our age grew up in a golden time of music. I am amazed by how much reverence there is for the music of the period and how familiar people are with the artists, even those who came-and-went so quickly like Zephyr, Melanie, Andy Robinson and McKendree Spring. An even bigger surprise is how many people are writing in who actually saw THE SHOW when it was on the air. (PBS was so young then. I was not sure if anyone saw our work.) But most of all I am impressed with how many people our age intimately remember these musicians and what they meant to the times. When I recorded these performances in the fall of 1969 I was still in my 20s and really had no idea what I was doing. In fact, this was my first time for directing a televised music show. But I felt we were doing something important and hopefully helping to end the Vietnam War. I am glad WITF-TV in Hershey, PA preserved the series, which is kind of a miracle unto itself. Clark Santee
I loved this old show, but personally, I would have rather seen less Ted Nugent and more Grand Funk Railroad, Iron Butterfly, Mountain, Youngbloods,Rare Earth, or Brooklyn Bridge.
