This is a useful video. How did you copy and paste the timestamp into the UID propert in Zettlekasten (Slip-box)? It happens so quickly I can't for the life of me see what you did. Do you use a short cut to obtain the timestamp?
Thanks for the great resources! I've duplicated several different Zettelkasten Notion templates and yours is the best: 1. Your explanation videos are the clearest and most complete (theory, general practice, Notion implementation) 2. You've kept things relatively simple, but you have the core principles of the approach implemented 3. I get bonus content: your great book notes on Taking Smart Notes! (now I need to rewrite, tho)
Mukul, this was awesome. You went through every step of the Zettelkasten structure and gave specific instructions/demonstrations for putting them together. Other videos I've watched have been piece-meal or incomplete. This video is going in my Zettelkasten notes on Notion for sure!

Mukul, this is hands down, the best breakdown of practicing the Zettelkasten method using Notion I have found on TH-cam. I remember how Ali Abdaal's Resonance Calendar on Notion blew my mind; I think through your video, which breaks-down such a sought after method, my mind is blown once again. As you rightly pointed out, there is a lot of uproar on the internet now about moving on from Notion to Roam and Obsidian. And seeing many popular TH-camrs like Thomas Frank, Shu Omi using Roam Research, I too was tempted to make that switch to either Roam or Obsidian. Thank God, I stumbled upon your video; I'm sticking to Notion only now, given how excellently you've taught bi-linking on Notion itself! (YAY) Your walk-through style video and neat film making only complemented your comprehensive understanding of how Notion works. Would love to see more videos from you on how you use Notion, in ways most people are unaware of! Thank you so much for this!
Thank you for your elaborate feedback Shrish. I'm glad it helped! I loved Ali Abdaal's resonance calendar too (big fan). Yep, sticking with Notion feels good. Also, Roam Research has become paid now (whereas Notion is now free). I feel sad for students who had already ported their knowledge-bases to Roam - for those that can not afford the $8 per month, and now either have to pay for it, or lose their system. All the more reason perhaps, to not switch apps.
I know you made this video ages ago but thought to say thanks, I found it extremely useful. I’m interested in how much more you’ve developments you made on your templates since then. All the best and thanks
I think you’ve done a good job implementing several of Luhmann’s features into Notion, but here’s what I’ve found in my experience (several months this year of trying Foam and Obsidian) - the magic of zettelkasten = zettel (note), and kasten (box), which is a note box, yes. But the key is this: it’s analog. Luhmann outlines 3 features: 1) analog arbitrary tree system (cannot be done digitally), 2) fixed permanent id’s (NOT Dates! And this is important for branching and stochastic randomness), 3) Register (manual, slow, painful, imperfect, meaning NO Search). After trying both digital and analog, one quickly discovers the hidden properties of analog as the true *magic* of his system because it forces (in his own words) an alter ego or second memory to develop in your own mind that you can communicate with. (For source info, read Luhmann’s *own* paper “Communication with slipboxes (paraphrasing here)”. Would love to hear anyone’s take on this. I’m not sure where I’m wrong. Really loved the first part of your video with analog notes though!
This is so helpful! I've been trying to figure out how to use Notion as a slip box after switching from Evernote. The walk thru had all the info I needed.
Great work. So beneficial for people like me who need to have a lot on their plate but were trying to figure out a way to go about it efficiently. Loved it!
Great video dude - really unique and interesting take on using Notion. I know you said in the start of the video that you wouldn't move to Roam, but it would make this entire process a lot easier for you, saving time and allowing you to do more of the writing and less of the 'sorting out'.

It seems like Notion has a lot to offer but I'm simply lost on where to get started. Keep up the great work!
Definitely one of the best videos explaining how to implement the Zettelkasten method via the Notion app, your template is very well thought. If only Notion had a "Graph View" (much like Obsidian and Roam)... it would be the perfect note taking app.
@@mkulkhanna ha ha ... yes ... I agree with Cosmo, you've made an EXCELLENT video, and great to be able to follow along and build it. I feel really ready to tackle it all now. Excellent description. I just have subscribed to Notion and I learned not only about Zettelkasten but about Notion too. Very clear and useful. THANK YOU!
Hey Mukul, good job. From my point of view, this video is a good starting point for creating a digital slip-box, probably not a very complicated, advanced or fancy one. Very well done. Thanks!
Thank you very much. I am glad I managed to follow you despite my age and learning speed. I'd like to thank you also for the template. I am keen to know how you use Notion for other purposes. Please direct me to the resources. Many thanks again.
Very nice video. Yes, I'd love to see more of how you use Notion for your life projects. Basically what I see here is that you have used Notion as a relational database. I have not used Notion but I had the impression that it was more of a word processor/note taking product. With relational database features it is clearly a good product for research. I wonder if Notion stores its data in a simple text format. I immediately gave up on Roam because it is an insane rip off. It is a nice program, but I won't get sucked into a money drain. I have also discarded some other products because they want to control my data and/or keep my data in propitiatory format. Not something I'll do. I'm currently using Obsidian which is nice, and they keep data in flat text files on my own computer. They also say the free version will remain free. So far so good. So long as I have my data in text files, I suppose I could always code something in Python to make my own Zettlekasten should I have to. I have not thought much about it but I imagine I could even kludge up a system in Evernote. The basic idea of the system is just note cards with references to each other. It would not have a slick front end, but I'll bet it would work. Thanks again for your video.
Excellent video on how to use Zettelkasten with Notion. Great overview with lots of great specific examples. The video went a little fast for me the first time, as a first time user of ZK, but I’m hoping to learn more by creating my own version. Are your templates available?
Interesting. You could do the Index with a filtered database within, you could even do this with a template now selecting the original zettel as Filter
Thanks for the suggestion Felix. I think I wanted to avoid applying a filter each time I want to focus on an entrance note. Plus adding index information manually in the entrance note allows me to structure and organise the contents of the topic in whatever hierarchy works best for it.
Hi Mukul, Could you explain the point of an Entrance Note, and your logic behind connecting notes using Entrance Notes, vs Preceding/Succeeding Notes? I'm interpreting Entrance Notes as key topics which can link to several other concepts. Preceding/Succeeding Notes just help to link concepts that you connect together. So Entrance Notes are just a way to designate a key topic e.g. the Zettelkasten method, and index the related concepts under it e.g. Active Inhibition? What happens when one key topic is an Entrance Note to another key topic? i.e. Should an Entrance Note be an Entrance Note to ANOTHER Entrance note? e.g. The Zettelkasten Method is an Entrance Note to Active Inhibition, with Active Inhibition branching off into several other concepts Thanks!
Hello Lum, thanks for asking. Yes your interpretation is correct. The entrance note is like an entry point for a key topic. Each time you want to start researching about that topic or visit through it's constituent notes, the entrance note acts as the starting point. Preceding / succeeding notes are to establish a chain of notes (like a train of thought). About your question, I think the current system is better suited for only a two-level hierarchy - entrance note (parent) , constitutent note (child). But it could still be extrapolated to accommodate multiple levels in two ways - 1. In the example that you have provided, the children (underlying zettels) of the 'Active inhibition' note could link to the 'Active inhibition' note as it's entrance note using the property. Using an approach like this you can create multiple levels of entrance notes. The drawback with this is that your 'Entrance notes' view would not work then. This is because that view is based on the filter's check that assumes that entrance notes would not have any entrance (parent) notes of their own. And therefore the 'Active inhibition' note would not be filtered because it has a parent entrance note also. A workaround then would be to add an extra checkbox property in the zettel note that checks if the current note is an entrance note. Then for all entrance notes you could tick that property on, and your 'Entrance notes' view's filter could check for the status of the checkbox. 2. If you think that the situation in your example is a particularly rare one, then you could just add textual information inside the 'Active inhibition' to represent the hierarchy. I hope this helps! Thank you
@@mkulkhanna Appreciate the advice and your suggestion on a workaround. Guess the only way is to iterate and adapt it based on how my Zettelkasten grows. Thanks! Keep up the good work:)
@@lumjar You could also create a Different DB with only "entrance notes", or "topics". In this DB there could be relations between the different topics (so you can layer your notes hierarchy), and these could be the entrance notes to topics. A zettel can be related to multiple "entrance notes" if it is related to 2 topics, and of course one "entrance note" can have many childrens. What do you think of this solution?
Thanks for sharing this video. I started using Obsidian as Zettelkasten tool but somehow found it restricting than Notion. So I was thinking of how to create Zettelkasten in Notion. this video is a great help, will setup my Zettelkasten in Notion now. BTW, how to see the tree-node view of Zettelkasten? Obsidian provides it
I have been playing around with Obsidian for a couple of months now, and thinking of slowly transitioning to it. Notion, however, continues to be my go-to for the rest of the "life management" stuff (journaling, todo lists, etc.)
Thank you for your video; I'm just getting into Notion myself and the Zettelkasten idea, so this provides a very good starting point for me. Though I can see that Roam might be better for ZK. By the way, your pronunciations of Zettelkasten and Sönke Ahrens are perfect. Only "Luhmann" should have a short 'A' sound in 'mann' like in 'Madras' ;-) not the American 'man'. :-)
This is really good. Don't know about the gallery view, though. Won't that become really, really, really unmanageable as your box grows? I guess it doesn't really matter as you have to depend on the search function in any case. Thanks for putting this out. :)
Hi this is a great video, I appreciate your guidance! it's super helpful but I'm confused as to what's the point of the entrance note? what is it really? what is the purpose of it
Hi! Thank you for the video, it's really helpful! However, when I'm using your Notion template, I'm still confused about what does "Entrance Note," "Next," and "Previous" property means. And how do you use tags? Thanks!
Hi! Okay so an entrance note is essentially the first note to a string of notes. It is like a parent node (in a tree of nodes) that can represent a specific category. For example, a person studying biology can have entrance notes for physiology, cardiology, immunology etc. each of which contain a bunch of relevant (children) notes about the respective topics. 'Previous' and 'Next' properties are just a way to keep track of the string of notes inside each entrance (parent) note. They allow you to represent your mental models in a sequential setting, wherein you could have an idea about a specific topic be succeeded or preceded by another idea in the same category. Tags are just an additional way of classifying your notes into broader categories. I think the template provided in the description has some examples that you could refer, to get a better understanding of how things can be used. I hope that helps! :)
Mukul Khanna ah, I get it now! Thank you very much for your explanation! And I was wondering since I just found out that Notion has a new back-linking feature now, how do you use this feature on Zettelkasten?
Thanks Paula! The UID is a unique identifier for each zettel and is auto-generated based on the timestamp. It is completely optional based on your use-case.
Hi, Awesome video I am gonna try to use this system. By the way just checked your book notes and I found this : Untitled : Those who are not very good at something tend to be overly confident, while those who have made an effort tend to underestimate their abilities. While untitled was a link to something. Can you please tell me how you created this function.
Hi Mukul. Liked the video and the execution seems brilliant. I was reading more the Zettelkatsen method and I'm really confused about linking/tagging new notes. The whole process of filing notes is to encourage cross-subject/cross-disciplinary conversation right ? So how can any kind of categorization work, because it will essentially bracket a topic and prevent connections right ?
Thanks Akshay. You could consider categorizing using tags? You could also perhaps have different threads (with different entrance notes) for different categories. You could still connect your notes in both these cases.
@@mkulkhanna Right. My question is about using ags effectively. (Not entrance notes) If I read a lot for my research and place all of my notes in zettelkasten method, I will would want to link the ideas and would come up with a lot of tags. I'm wondering how to come with some kind of 'organic' tag.
Hi, as someone who understands Zettelkasten and technology too would you be able to suggest a method to apply Zettelkasten using simple doc files. File names and folders is one way I guess. Would you advise anything else. Would appreciate it thanks.
Even though categorisation of notes could be easier with plain folders and files, cross linking (which is the central tenet of the Zettelkasten) wouldn't be at all effective. I think you can look at Obsidian. I have heard they too use a (markdown) file-based system.
Thank you for your video about how settlelkasten works on notion. Yet notion is not the perfect way to show what the settlelkasten is perfect a card notes tool. 1. Notes card can’t easy connect well if they have connection 2. It’s not easy to organize the notes before we want to write an article . Tools like roam research or obsidian will be good . But you are actually an awesome guy
Hey Mukul, Thanks for this valuable information. I find your chanel by seeking if there were a possibility to use Notion for a Zettelkasten method. I just get acknowledgment of the Zettelkasten method a few days ago, there is something I need to make clear two things in your video : the "Zettelkasten (slip-box)" is the general category you are informing true? So if I make for instance a training in personal finance management, the main slip box could be "Finance management (Slip-Box)?". The other thing is the source. What is the link between the slip-box and the source? Can we have multiple sources for one slip-box?
Hi Patrick, in my setting, there's only one main slip-box (+ a reference box). Most people use just one such main box to store all kinds of notes. Source is the source of the idea (the zettel). It could be a book, a blogpost, a youtube video, a podcast, anything. Yes you can have multiple sources for each zettel.
Great question. I haven't really played around with the new backlinking system. Though it looks really promising! I think utilising these backlinks would simplify, and therefore, significantly improve the current system.
Are you actually using the UID ? Because notion refers to the title of the page I cannot figure out the use of an UID. But all in all great system thanks for sharing !
I have the UID set up, but I don't refer to it. It's completely optional; I added it in the implementation template because I've seen many people on Zettelkasten forums to be using it .
It's handy to have the UID, specially if you end up creating two notes with the same title. (The UID immediately lets you know which one is more recent, without having to read the whole note)
@@mkulkhanna I loved your template and used it for a couple weeks. It gave me good practice. However, I found this program called obsidian and I think it is easier to setup Zettelkasten in that interface and graphically see how ideas are related. You should check it out.
@@mkulkhanna Congratulations, my friend! Did you change your Zettelkasten system after Notion implemented backlinks? I'm a newbie but I had seen people complaining about Notion's speed - is this problem related to having many bi-directional (relational) linked databases? What are the best practices (speed-wise) for creating a huge Zettelkasten database inside of Notion? Thank you very much!
I see the UID property being practically useless here. Because notion is taking care of the pointer to each item in a database, why do we need the UID?
UID is very handy in case you create two notes with the same title - something very possible over time. The UID lets you immediately see which one is more recent without you having to read each note's content.
Thank you for the feedback people. 😊

So Entrance Notes are just a way to designate a key topic e.g. the Zettelkasten method, and index the related concepts under it e.g. Active Inhibition?
What happens when one key topic is an Entrance Note to another key topic? i.e. Should an Entrance Note be an Entrance Note to ANOTHER Entrance note?
e.g. The Zettelkasten Method is an Entrance Note to Active Inhibition, with Active Inhibition branching off into several other concepts
Thanks!
But it could still be extrapolated to accommodate multiple levels in two ways -
Please make update video after notion added bi link ability
Thanks
Thanks, this was great, especially the explanation of how to use relationships to connect knowledge to sources.
Obsidian provides it
Wooah! Have you considered using Obsidian? It's a game changer. I'm using Notion + Obsidian.
I have been playing around with Obsidian for a couple of months now, and thinking of slowly transitioning to it. Notion, however, continues to be my go-to for the rest of the "life management" stuff (journaling, todo lists, etc.)
Very good sharing, Thanks!
Great Job Buddy !
Thanks for the video! I would like to know how do you separate fleeting notes, literature notes and permanent notes?
Hi this is a great video, I appreciate your guidance! it's super helpful but I'm confused as to what's the point of the entrance note? what is it really? what is the purpose of it
great video, thanks for sharing the template!
Great Explaination
u should check out roam vs taskade too! be cool to see a guide
Thank you, that was pretty helpful!
Thank you for this. How would you change this now that the backlinking is an option?
THAAAANKS. Finally an Indian
Nice video! I'm going to try and implement this
Thank you! Good luck!
Hi, very helpful. I was wondering how the advent of bi-directional back links in Notion has changed your setup please?
Earned my Sub... got this in my recommendation
Thank you very much for that video.
And I was wondering since I just found out that Notion has a new back-linking feature now, how do you use this feature on Zettelkasten?
hei! Do you use any shortcut to open as a page? It seems that you don't have to click on the button to open a page as a page.
What is the difference between notes type a and type b
Great video, thanks! The UID, what's the utility? How do you use it?
Thanks Paula! The UID is a unique identifier for each zettel and is auto-generated based on the timestamp. It is completely optional based on your use-case.
Hi, Awesome video I am gonna try to use this system. By the way just checked your book notes and I found this :
Untitled : Those who are not very good at something tend to be overly confident, while those who have made an effort tend to underestimate their abilities.
While untitled was a link to something. Can you please tell me how you created this function.
Could you share the link to this? I couldn't find it.
@@mkulkhanna Never mind, Thank You for your reply but I have decided to use Obsidian to implement Zettelkasten.
Tags* effectively
Hi, as someone who understands Zettelkasten and technology too would you be able to suggest a method to apply Zettelkasten using simple doc files. File names and folders is one way I guess. Would you advise anything else. Would appreciate it thanks.
Even though categorisation of notes could be easier with plain folders and files, cross linking (which is the central tenet of the Zettelkasten) wouldn't be at all effective.
I think you can look at Obsidian. I have heard they too use a (markdown) file-based system.
Mukul Khanna What about hyperlinking between files. Could that work. But yes I see what you mean. Will check out Obsidian. Thanks!
Hey Mukul,
Thanks for this valuable information.
Very nice video ! Thank you! Question, with the introduction of backlinks in notion, would you change your workflow or keep going with this one?
Notion template starts at 3:19
6:00, relation property
I noticed in the template that for each zettel there are two seperate templates for each, which one do you use for what zettel?
I use the "New Zettel Template". I removed the other one for clarity.
@@mkulkhanna I loved your template and used it for a couple weeks. It gave me good practice. However, I found this program called obsidian and I think it is easier to setup Zettelkasten in that interface and graphically see how ideas are related. You should check it out.
Hello from South Africa.
Greate insights!
My entry doesn’t show when I try to fill in source after making the relation the way you’ve shown, could it be a glitch?
Less likely to be a glitch on Notion's end. Try duplicating the template and customizing it for your setup?
@@mkulkhanna so I messed around and realised there’s a huge lag between when I create a page and when it is linkable through a search elsewhere.
It's awesome.. 👍
Life changing
Brilliant
Thank you....
