Yup, this was it. For anyone who thought seeing Merry's funeral was hard enough, Oda was like, "nah, Imma have Merry apologize, say her own goodbyes, and dehydrate everyone's eyes for real".
"Crying over a ship is ridiculous." The thought almost everyone has after crying over the Going Merry. Also been loving your reactions/binge watching your reactions to One Piece, they're so genuine and your enthusiasm for the show is infectious!
The pet analogy was perfect. This is how I have always felt about the Merry, a grateful and wholesome puppy, spending his last moments with the people she loves the most.
Everything Merry did truly showed that she was truly a Straw Hat Pirate to the very end. With Iceberg's help, even after being sent into Aqua Laguna by Kaku to be torn to shreds, Merry was able to brave her way through the storm and race all the way to Enies Lobby to save the crew, and the thought of that is so absolutely heartwarming. It's such a Straw Hat thing to do: even when you're bloody, beaten, broken, or on your last leg and ready to give in to your limits, you push through it all and give more until the hardest part is over. Just like Luffy finishing off Lucci with a Jet Gatling, Merry had gone way past her limit, but it parallels the captain and the ship because it shows just how much they cherish the crew and how far they're willing to go for the people they love so much. RIP Merry. A true Nakama to the very end.
I gotta say going through One Piece again with you two has be wonderful, feels like the first time I went through it. Welcome to the "We cried over a boat" club even though Merry has never just been a boat.
I love Klarissa's undying hatred for Lucci and Spanda. I'm not using the M, either. Like they said during their "I want to live" reaction, "He doesn't deserve the M." Karissa doesn't care about Lucci lying on the ground in pain and broken or about Spanda being broken in half by Robin. She's got the bloodthirsty tenacity and desire to see the worst scum in this universe receive the pain they cause innocent people right back tenfold. I know we all do. If she hates those two that bad, then she's going to hate the astronauts.
30:55 real or not.. I’m so fascinated by most of the things in One Piece. You both haven’t seen it all yet. But what you have seen.. I loved how they found the other half of the crickets castle up in the sky, I loved the giant shadows, I enjoy finding lost things.. but the Klabauterman takes the cake. I love the idea of spirits and stuff and having the Merry basically come to life was amazing to me. Fr everyone says OP too long… but when you find your groove in it.. it’s not long enough. I’ve watched this entire show 5x now. Truthfully. Technically with you two it’s my 6th in a way.. but so worth it. Goofy but perfect
I love that moment when Haylo started losing it and Kiss was just 'STOP' and was starting to lose it as well. You both get it so much! Welcome to the 'I cried over a ship' club! 😭💖
I was depressed for a week after reading this chapter. It felt like I have just lost very good friend that has been with me for my entire life. I cried in my sleep thinking of Merry. Never has been a story affected me so much. That's why this story is so special to me. RIP Merry.
RIGHT THERE, that scene at the end of 310, i watched a hundred times, it's my favorite scene of this show, i simply love it, it's so good, the feeling, the composition, the soundtrack, everything, from the moment Usopp starts yelling, to when merry starts talking, it gets me every single time!! I love One Piece And now you girls have entered the group: I cried at the funeral of a boat! :v Thank you for the video! =)
That’s why, In the live action, when Luffy goes to see Merry for the first time he goes “You can talk?” Just that little reference made me bawl my eyes out.
I was BAWLING MY EYES OUT! I have have seen this so many times 😂 Thank you for being a part of us and let us share this again with someone for the first time ❤
It's still wild how even coming back from 800 episodes ahead you can instantly just get sucked back in and feel the same emotions. The "GOMENE" scene was pure cinema.
Not sure if you guys realize this, but Robin doesn't call anyone by their name until after she's rescued. Leading up to this, she called everyone by their title, captain, chef, swordsman, long nose, doctor, navigator, etc. Something as subtle as this is another emotional layer you don't catch at first. But adds to the development of the character. Oda is truly one of the best writers in all of Manga
I have said this so many times I feel like I'm a bot but man, I love watching these reactions. Almost everything worth mentioning as a seasoned watcher is being caught onto by y'all. You guys recognized Franky's mens' voices and KNEW Paulie had that covered. I love this show and this page
The entirety from Water Seven to Enies Lobby was unusually emotional. Merry was so loved by the crew, it developed sentience and devoted her all to the crew, to her literal last breath. 😭
I was waiting for 310. For me, the episode when this arc makes its full circle and when every good one piece viewer starts weeping :') So glad you enjoyed it and SOOOOO happy Hayley understood the meaning of the dolphins noises as the sound someone not linked to the Merry would hear 💕Spot on as always
What a great reaction. Watching other reactions it's disappointing when people see Merry coming too early, but you guys realized at just the right time.
The greatest climax to combine the two major themes of a story ever put to paper. Ships are used as a metaphor two fold in this arc: A) A ship not being inherently good or evil, to represent Robin and her struggle with self worth over being called inherently evil her whole life. B) The spine of the ship being broken, to represent Luffy, as captain and core of the crew, and his weakness as a leader at the beginning of the arc. Only once these two conflicts are resolved (I wanna live and Luffy defeating Lucci) can the metaphor come full circle. It's the literal ship itself which comes to life and saves the crew. The ship that begun as not inherently good nor evil but was nurtured over time with love, care and friendship to BECOME good. Just as a person like Robin can be good when nurtured in the right environment. Masterpiece.
Goes deeper than that; Merry also acts as a metaphor for Usopp in that they're both crew members that are at their limit and won't be able to keep up forever. Usopp recognises this and on some level fears he'll be abandoned once his status as the weak link makes him a burden. And that in turn mirrors Robin who also knows full well she is going to be a burden and expects to be abandoned one day. But when the breaking point arrives and the crew has to choose between facing impossible odds or just abandoning their own, nobody even hesitates to take those odds. And while it doesn't magically change the reality from the start of the arc; Usopp is still weak, Merry is still beyond repair, Robin is still going to be hunted forever, none of them are facing it alone anymore and they all make peace with it in their own way. Culminating in Merry going out on her own terms after holding on to and beyond her absolute limit.
the thing is you can feel meery's fatigue and her being at the her last ropes when she said "back to the seas of adventure", the voice actor did an increadilbe job.
I like how Galley-La and Franky were right in saying that the Merry wouldn't be able to safely take them to the next island. I think it helped solidify the foreclosure because, in the moment, Luffy totally swung back to the "we need to save Merry at all costs" and begged them to fix her.
Merry is not only a Nakama, it is also the concept of our place of comfort, it represents a place, a person or a pet. Merry is what makes us feel safe and content. Sometimes we must leave what contains us to let it go and look for new directions. I love this show because of those encrypted messages in the plot. Sorry for the bad English, my native language is Spanish ♥
Crying all over again because of Merry? More likely than you think!! I'm on my knees openly sobbing rn at 1:40 am :,) Also, when Oda wrote this, he was crying too, it was the death of a dear Starhat member, gone but never forgotten!!
These episodes broke me to the point I feel like an empty husk right now... luckily I can cheer myself up a little by looping 19:41-19:46 a few dozen times
Honestly man, every single time. Without fail. There's always people that ask how someone can cry over a ship but, when you've become so invested in the story alongside knowing that Merry has a soul, how does it not hit people man. The Klabautermann aspect was honestly genius on Oda's part because she's not just an inanimate thing that they use anymore, in a similar vein to how Zoro's Wado Ichimonji and Sandai Kitetsu are more than just swords. Merry is and shall always be a permanent honorary member of the Straw Hats
Fun fact: Oda revealed in and SBS (question and answer section) that in Merry's openning ceremony when they have to break the bottle, it didn't break. It is believed when that happen is a signal of bad luck. I don't know, but the Merry looked really lucky at the end
The Alabasta Incident could easily be covered up, THIS is such a MASSIVE deal that there's no way it can be covered up. They LITERALLY invaded Enies Lobby...1 of 3 seats of power for the government and the destruction that came afterwards was too much to cover up!! Like Gran said : That kids name will be known throughout the ENTIRE World!!
To be fair, they can cover up Rob Lucci's "secret" identity even though there's 10 000 marines in Enies Lobby who know of him, it's not inconceivable that they could cover up this too. Sure, some marines would leak it, but in a world with communication less advanced than ours, those would easily dismissed as vague rumors that most people aren't even aware of. And they could use internal contractors to rebuild the island. Once again there would be leak but not enough for the world to notice. SPOILER FOR CURRENT MANGA - - - - - Remember that at the time the World Economy News Paper was still doing the bidding of the World Government, it's only recently that Morgan started "betraying" the government and publish whatever news he wanted. So I think they didn't cover up because 1) Ao Kiji definitely had influence over the matter since he also did stuff to help Robin and the civilians and 2) they decided it was more useful to pin the whole thing on Luffy than saving face. The issue is that they need to increase his bounty and they already gave him 100 millions without a reason the first time, they can't increase it again without drawing attention to him and proving that they're covering something up. And they're starting to think they want him to have a high bounty and be notorious. People say bounties are useless because we don't see any competent bounty hunters in One Piece but that's not true: We know of a few. The 7 warlords. Mihawk was pursuing Krieg, Croc had a whole organisation dealing with bounties, and Doffy probably would cash up on a big bounty if it fell into his lap and he had no other use for the pirate, BB literally became one by delivering a bounty. The whole reason for the 7 warlord system to exist is to deal with threats that are too difficult for the Navy to handle as they're quite understaffed so the simple fact that the system exists prove that they cash on bounties or at least kill dangerous pirates regularly enough for the warlord's existence to be worth it.
Now you know that, in the live action, when Luffy asks the bow of the Merry if it can talk, it's such a funny and sad moment at the same time. Going Merry is gone...to stay in our hearts forever.😢❤
There is a famous episode. MAYUMI TANAKA who is Ruffys voice actor ,she asked recording staff a thing. she said ,Please the recrding of this episode should be only once, the take two is no way. then she did it perfectly. Her perfect voice action made other acters and staff cry so much.❤😢😊

13:50 - I want you to pay great attention here when Robin calls Luffy by his name. Before Ennies Lobby, Robin NEVER called anyone on the crew by their names. It was always "captain, swordmanship, big nose, navigator, doctor" and so on. Robin was affraid to "become a burden" and she used to close herself because she didn't want to create bonds that would make her suffer when she gets abandoned again. It was after the "I want to live" scene, that Robin started to call them by their names. It was there that Robin finally realized that she had a family of people that loves her and that she was finally free of this fear. This small writing details, like how Robin changes the way she call them is what makes One Piece so memorable. I fucking love this piece of art.
A thing that semmingly gets overlooked a lot, but I just love how Robin, when thanking everyone kinda goes to her 8year old self, in terms of bodylanguage and voice 🥲
Because of this, water seven and Enies Lobby arc is my best arc in one piece. We got "betrayal story", fight between friends, sacrifice, Robin's backstory, CP9, introduction of 2nd & 3rd gear, Lost friend, etc
It has been many years since I first saw this scene but it still ALWAYS cracks me up One Piece has lots of VERY emotional scenes but no other scenes make me cry like this Again and again

There is only one that made me cry about a damn boat.
The best boat.❤
"Crying over a ship is ridiculous." The thought almost everyone has after crying over the Going Merry.
Also been loving your reactions/binge watching your reactions to One Piece, they're so genuine and your enthusiasm for the show is infectious!
i just never thought i'd cry over a fictional ship.
it's peak.
"C'mon man.. it's just chunk of woods"
Me : 😭😭😭
The pet analogy was perfect.
I’ve watched this scene so many times across many reactors and it still gets me 😢.
Imo one of the most saddest anime deaths ever. Rip Merry, we love you and thank you for carrying the StrawHats on so many wonderful adventures.
Merry voice is just cuteness overloaded🥰
Merry is the soul of the ship, like a ship's god. His choice of words is dignified and noble.
Merry voiced by Kuwashima Houko who also voiced Victoria Cindry (Thriller Bark)
@8:07 My own tears got in the way at the moment of realization and I had to rewind and rewatch 😂
23:59 "I'm not going to cry over characters that don't exist".
00:00 "MERRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY"
I love Hayley's face when Klarissa was "I'm not usually an advocate for violence and murder" , and then Hayley was like "you always are!"
I love Klarissa's undying hatred for Lucci and Spanda. I'm not using the M, either. Like they said during their "I want to live" reaction, "He doesn't deserve the M."
Karissa doesn't care about Lucci lying on the ground in pain and broken or about Spanda being broken in half by Robin.
I love the line that Luffy says when he sees the Going Merry for the First time in the live action.
The way the sisters both gasped at the same time when the *Gomene* started 😭 we will always miss you Merry 😢
By the way 36:55 and 36:59 😂 love these reactions ❤
I love One Piece
And now you girls have entered the group: I cried at the funeral of a boat! :v Thank you for the video! =)
One of the most amazing stuff about this arc is that when you think you had enough of peak emotions the sequence brings more and more!
January 24th 2025, this is the day I've been waiting since you two started to watch this anime. THIS is One Peak. The best moment for me thus far.
That’s why, In the live action, when Luffy goes to see Merry for the first time he goes “You can talk?” Just that little reference made me bawl my eyes out.
bro i forgot about the live action. when is it coming back i cant wait
@@gxdflashx4718later this year there’ll be season two!
One piece is about Friendship and Merry was our Ship Friend. Oda is a genius
36:00 No gangsta in the world able to survive merry 2nd gear 😢
A writer can make you cry on ship then imagine how great the writer is
I was BAWLING MY EYES OUT!
Oda is truly one of the best writers in all of Manga
its been years... and here i am crying again over merry😢😢
There's a wonderful fanart on internet about Merry at the bottom of the sea looking proud of the new (future) bounty of his Captain. I love it.
I have said this so many times I feel like I'm a bot but man, I love watching these reactions. Almost everything worth mentioning as a seasoned watcher is being caught onto by y'all. You guys recognized Franky's mens' voices and KNEW Paulie had that covered. I love this show and this page
I’ve watched a lot of reactors and this is the best reaction to Merry reveal by far. 😭😭😭
The timing is so perfect it’s as if this is the exact reaction that Oda wanted and had in mind.
When Merry said "gomene" my tears went 0 to 100 📈
*gomen ne
The entirety from Water Seven to Enies Lobby was unusually emotional.
Merry was so loved by the crew, it developed sentience and devoted her all to the crew, to her literal last breath. 😭
I was waiting for 310. For me, the episode when this arc makes its full circle and when every good one piece viewer starts weeping :') So glad you enjoyed it and SOOOOO happy Hayley understood the meaning of the dolphins noises as the sound someone not linked to the Merry would hear 💕Spot on as always
I remember laughing at my friend for crying about a boat in middle school. Now I'm an adult crying about the same thing😂😂😂
What a great reaction. Watching other reactions it's disappointing when people see Merry coming too early, but you guys realized at just the right time.
The greatest climax to combine the two major themes of a story ever put to paper.
Ships are used as a metaphor two fold in this arc:
A) A ship not being inherently good or evil, to represent Robin and her struggle with self worth over being called inherently evil her whole life.
I'm a 45y old dad viewed these episodes a few years back, and ngl I never cried this hard in all my anime viewing history
You can say this is a masterpiece....
Nobody expected who watched this episode that they would cry over a boat. 🥺
I like how Galley-La and Franky were right in saying that the Merry wouldn't be able to safely take them to the next island. I think it helped solidify the foreclosure because, in the moment, Luffy totally swung back to the "we need to save Merry at all costs" and begged them to fix her.
Seeing everyone happily screaming "into the sea!!!" in the midst of chaos is such a powerful moment ❤
It is very Oda though to make a story where he can fill you joy only to rip your heart out and show it to you.
24:54 yes, Nami navigating whirlpools in LRLL was cannon
29:38 the smiles before the tears lol
Crying all over again because of Merry? More likely than you think!! I'm on my knees openly sobbing rn at 1:40 am :,)
Also, when Oda wrote this, he was crying too, it was the death of a dear Starhat member, gone but never forgotten!!
Well, they can cover the navy being such goobers and blame the whole thing on the Straw Hats. No one needs to know they buster called their own base.
SPOILER FOR CURRENT MANGA

Remember that at the time the World Economy News Paper was still doing the bidding of the World Government, it's only recently that Morgan started "betraying" the government and publish whatever news he wanted.
I watched this on Patreon again here. it’s so full of heart. this story is unmatched. a masterpiece
Just when u think everything’s alright. They had to hit us in feels again. 😭😭
Now you know that, in the live action, when Luffy asks the bow of the Merry if it can talk, it's such a funny and sad moment at the same time. Going Merry is gone...to stay in our hearts forever.😢❤
Idk why but whenever I see Hayli getting teared up, I get too 😅🙂
There is a famous episode.
MAYUMI TANAKA who is Ruffys voice actor ,she asked recording staff a thing.
she said ,Please the recrding of this episode should be only once, the take two is no way.
then she did it perfectly.
Her perfect voice action made other acters and staff cry so much.❤😢😊
Where most people get shocked that they really cried over Merry W ODA for Writing such a Wonderful Piece ❤
19:42 I love the transition in their faces from sadness from flashbacks to shock from Robin's brutality 🤣😂
8:00 the way their facial expression changes as they realise what's happening....
I don't think I cried when I first watched this I was just happy and in awe but as I am watching their reaction I got emotional too 🥹
Hands down these two are best op reactors. Best reactors in general (that's why I hope they watch haikyuu too lol )
Love these reactions.
Will never get over how much this show makes me feel all kinds of emotions the future episodes you two will watch will be worth every minute you put into it.
Merry is still in our hearts.
She will always be remembered as a straw hat .
✨❤
Is this also the first time she calls a crewmember (Luffy) by their name rather than a nickname?
Can you give the timestamp please?
@@peterhans3495 13:50
@@JonflipZoosa yup, one of those things you really start noticing on rewatches, how up until this point she adresses everyone only by their function
Because of this, water seven and Enies Lobby arc is my best arc in one piece.
We got "betrayal story", fight between friends, sacrifice, Robin's backstory, CP9, introduction of 2nd & 3rd gear, Lost friend, etc
It has been many years since I first saw this scene but it still ALWAYS cracks me up
One Piece has lots of VERY emotional scenes but no other scenes make me cry like this
Again and again
i first watched these episodes more than a decade ago but i still cry as hard every single time! i've never not cried when i've seen it. t's insane the emotional impact oda manages to deliver. and i have to say i love your reactions so much because you emotionally connect to the story just as hard as i do, it's lovely to see :)
9:43 "How can I be moved by a ship?"
Yep.
We've ALL been there.
