It occurred to me after at talk on the synfig forum. Someone imported a background some friend drew in a 3d program. It was also mentioned that there was no easy way to do shading in synfig. This is pretty damn easy. I always use applied gradients as my normal way of drawing stuff.
Day 1 learning Synfig (Win7 64bit), and there's no width adjustment for regions, only for outlines. The only thing that's different on yours is when you say "encapsulate" which I imagine to be the same as "group"

Channel name sucks , not bad video though
