Great video! Didn’t the website say the longlist will be announced March 5, not March 3? Also, I don’t think In Memoriam, Someday Maybe, or Your Driver is Waiting qualify this year because they were published prior to 1 April 2023 in the UK (to qualify the books have to be published initially, usually hardcover release, in the UK between 1 April 2023 and 31 March 2024).

@@GunpowderFictionPlotI think there is some wiggle room in the rules to allow exceptions, so anything is possible. I think a lot of your predictions are going to be picked, though. I’d be really surprised if Julia and Enter Ghost were not on the longlist.

Night Bloom was such a risky book to write. The author had to trust her readers so much to hold everything till that last section. I basically want to read every book you mentioned here.

Completely agree, a lot of set up required for that novel.

I'm so surprised that more people didn't mention "The Memory of Animals" by Claire Fuller. I know I haven't heard many people on BookTube chat about it, but I thought it was pretty good and left me feeling almost proud of Fuller for always taking on new/different topics and themes. I do prefer "Unsettled Ground" but I know that there's a bigger readership for "The Memory of Animals" out there.
Thank you for putting books on my radar that I hadn't heard of! I'm always curious to see which books are selected for the longlist...Sometimes even more than actually reading them, lol!

I am so behind on booktube but I'm catching up! I do know the longlist already but I think I prefer your longlist to the one we actually got 😅I was so surprised to not see julia. I think even though the book of form and emptiness is about ben (benny?) his mum is such a prominent character and their journeys are so connected that it makes sense it could still win! I think in memoriam sounds amazing but I also understand why the womens prize wouldn't have selected it... It's satisfying seeing what you get right, knowing the list now. I still need to read enter ghost. Okay I will read night bloom because I love when authors use perspective well and make it part of the character perception. I didn't have any interest in that one until now. How to say babylon is on my shelves is the one from the list I am interested in, but the others less so...

  • @thoroughlyenjoyedbooks8565

If this was the longlist I'd honestly want to read every single one. I'm really hoping for a better list than last year because I was soooo uninspired.
A lot of these are already on my TBR, too, so I might just read them anyway.
Whilst I loved Talking At Night, I just don't think it has Women's Prize potential... We shall see!
I am in no position to make any predictions this year since I've been so out of the loop lately, but I finished Piglet and I really think it has a chance!

Always love your predictions!!! From the nonfiction longlist, Doppelganger wouldn't have been a book that particularly interested me, but then I listened to two interviews with the author on the podcast Between the Covers. The second interview, in particular, is so worth a listen. Definitely piqued my interest in that book!

Fun list, Scott! Although I am very much hoping How to Build a Boat is NOT on the list because it was, for me, the only actively bad book on the Booker longlist 👀
I do have some bad news for Winn fans though… In Memoriam was released too early to be eligible. I am in retrospect very, very surprised it didn’t make last year’s list. It seems exactly like the kind of book the Women’s Prize rewards.

You know this prize was created by women because they didn't feel like the publishing world was treating them fairly. In that time there has never been an attempt by men to do the same, there's nothing stopping a men's prize being founded, but it doesn't happen.
You can read up on the history of the women's prize on Wikipedia, why it was founded.
