While I personally prefer the adorable look of floppy dog ears, a lot of Doberman owners have there ears changed for intimidation. Similar to how Boxers have their tails cut and pit-bulls have their ears clipped.

Ear cropping is a BIG no no. Please do not alter your fur baby’s ears or tail unless medically necessary. They can cause health problems, can get infected, and IT FUCKIN HURTS. Dogs have so many nerves and veins in their ears. Please read up on why lots of veterinarians frown upon this practice. It’s up there with declawing your cats in terms of “vets don’t like the procedure, but feel forced to do it because some owners will go through other means to do it themselves” (or in declawing case, the cat gets euthanized if they can’t declaw it).
Please love your pets for how they appear when you adopt them, or don’t get them :)

Cropping used to only be allowed for dogs with medical issues or active working dogs. It's a such shame it's become popular as a cosmetic choice for dog owners since done wrong which it often is, can be a lifetime of severe pain and a struggle being social. Guard dogs had short tails and ears to make it harder for the opponent to damage or pull them away from the target and for intimidation. Dobermans can have dew claws on their back legs aswell which aren't attached to the foot directly so are also removed to prevent injury when in battle.For working dogs like hunting companions docked ears and tails meant cleaner, dryer ears ,but most hunting breeds have ears adapted to get muddy and wet, with less chance of ticks and a shorter tail meant less noise in the grass especially if they couldn't contain their excitement. Terriers had short tails to stop rats or their prey from causing injury and distractions in their blind spot.
The dew claws are nowadays still removed due to the likelihood of developing infections there. Ear cropping and tail docking are fortunately banned in the EU.
For breeds like Labradors, which my parents have, they do get a lot of ear infections. I think that was common with droopy long ears. In dobermans, bloodhounds, labs, etc.
@@rizavixen Bullshit. Only if they got long or thick droopy ears like Bassets etc. None of it applies to the Doberman. It's incredibly rare to ever see them with any serious ear infection.
All the reasons you're giving to justify these practices under certain circumstances, are objectifying animals as mere tools. Nothing justifies mutilation, only when it's done to prevent bigger damage, for example, amputating a limb to avoid spreading of gangrene.
Can you imagine us humans being mutilated to perform our jobs better? I don't think so.
Its not at all ears and tails have been altered like this for hundreds of years to make them more intimidating when being used in the fighting pits
