This is a very eco friendly kitchen. That fridge is probably still functioning somewhere and didn’t end up in a landfill after five years. Paper trash bags. Cardboard cartons for the cleaners. Recyclable glass. Even that new automatic dishwasher uses less water than washing by hand. The dishwasher is a great example of beneficial progress. Single use plastics and throwaway appliances suffering from planned obsolescence aren’t.
There weren't any plastic bags when I was little or a teenager. We had to use paper bags from the grocery store and dump them in the metal trash can. Can you say "Eww?"
When I was in grad school, I learned that the rise of consumer culture coincided with advertising on broadcast television as well as many housewives making decisions on home appliances (specifically those for the kitchen). Whatever autonomy or authority a homemaker did *not* have in the 50s and 60s, she at least got the last (and sometimes only) word in retail purchases to maintain a household.
I went back to washing dishes by hand. Dishwashers take forever and even the quiet ones become noisy before long. Cheaper too. I don't mind it at all. Kind of relaxing.
Some people call these "oppressive times for women." My grandmother used to say, "I've been both a housewife and an office worker. My worst day has a housewife was still better than the best day at the office."
My mom returned to work as a school secretary when she was 45. She still had three kids at home, the youngest being six. She absolutely loved her job! She worked for 20 years.
First I want to say that I want that stove! I love vintage stoves, gas or electric. I did not grow up with a dishwasher or garbage disposal and I still prefer doing dishes by hand. However I will agree that the infinity symbol represents dishes and laundry or the adult version of the " Never Ending Story" at least that is what I prefer to think of those chores as, instead of my daily exercise in futility.
I didn't have a dishwasher for the fist 8 years of my marriage and whe we bought our home a few months ago, it had a dishwasher and I turned up my nose to it. NOW, I couldn't get along without it!

In the 50s, there were many films talking about how all the tech advancements would create more free time. They gave us the impression that, with new tech, you could make your required 10 widgets in half a day instead of a whole day, and go home early. Instead, they just doubled the requirement to 20 widgets. No free time was gained, and instead all the profits from increased productivity went to the corporations. But then we end up with huge amounts of widgets no one has a real need for, so marketing and advertising had to convince us we needed multiple widgets. More and more consumed and more and more pollution and garbage, and still no extra free time.
Omg… I’m 42 years old and throughout my life, I always thought of the term “garbage disposal“ seemed strange… Like, it should’ve been referred to as a “garbage disposal unit” or “garbage disposal system“ or Something. Apparently, just like “Kleenex”, this contraption began as a “Garbage Dispose ALL”… It’s only 6:30 AM and I’ve already learned something new
I think if they ever saw a microwave, and what they can do, they'd have a heart attack!! That refrigerator was so TINY!! I remember ours... we had to "defrost" the freezer every Saturday... ewww what a chore!
dishwashers should be subsidized or required in every city home, adds hours to ones life, lol if only the 1950s imagination also gave us automatic clothes folder
I actually have two dishwashers in my kitchen. They are used regularly, and I live alone. Best thing I ever did was design a kitchen with two DW. If there was an automatic clothes folder on the market, I'd be the first in line (behind you!).
This one's great. Also I want to note that sometimes these videos are SNOBBISH and rude. Like did people talk to themselves like this? Was the inner voice saying "dishes are the last job I'll take before starving!!" "Why am I on the porch reading this book" "I can resume my role as Wife and Mother now!" It just feels rude to oneself
Ahhh the days when a woman might receive a vacuum cleaner, or a new washing machine as a Christmas gift. The times when she was expected to do her chores in a pretty dress and heels, and make it seem effortless to greet her husband freshly made up and neatly dressed when he got home. I remember these ads…I was the family dishwasher and cook lol. Thanks David, for the memories.🖤🇨🇦
What a small garbage can for a whole household. And shes wearing heels at home? The daughter dropped that dish on purpose to get out of it. I never use my garbage disposal. I dont get why it exists when I just dispose of everything in the garbage.
The 50's were when there were a few, relatively simple "formulas" for living the dream. I was a toddler, but everything depicted in the switch is true and the ability to reduce labor was extraordinary compared to before. I especially remember my mother spending hours doing laundry by hand. How could the formulas go so wrong? Nowadays we have turned "homes" into prisons with loads of appliances for "convenience." As a result, we Americans have lost our ability to improve ourselves and our communities. It's all performative now. Doesn't mean shit.

It is interesting how purity culture affected the 1950s USA. In Europe, nobody has or had a garbage disposal, they are illegal here. This is for one because it clogs up the entire sewage system, but also because nobody except the Germans had any problem with trash cans being near or in the house. Especially in city apartments. In the USA however it seemed that everything needed to be up to purity standards, from the bright white houses to the bright white dresses to the flawless lawns to the seamless asphalt streets. Everything polished to a shine, with all deemed vulgar hidden away.
