And outsiders can have not that much sympathy for you too. What ‘’should’ve been obvious’’ somehow isn’t to the folks getting caught up in it. Sometimes they even see it, but choose to ignore it because some sort of need is getting met that they don’t wish to let go. (Very much like a ‘toxic’’ relationship). This is especially true if people are believing it’s end times and they are the ‘’remnant’’- fear alone of such a scenario would have people sticking together with others that they normally wouldn’t associate with, like hostages in a terrorist’s siege. Cults know how to abuse and use the trust of well-meaning people. Just to say it’s ‘’end times’’ puts a very dark grim veneer on life, and to say that one is a part of the ‘’few last ones’’ an added strain of dire importance that you keep it up and do more. It’s a mindset one can be coaxed into believing. The media also uses these tactics to get people to join in on whatever idea they’re trying to sell.

yeah the cults make them believe that if they don’t stay with the “obedient” people ( which is their cult to them) , they are going to Hell. so out of fear of Hell, they are staying . But when they stay, they are endorsing false teaching /false doctrine and scripture says in 2John 1;9-11, to not wish them Godspeed and to not let them into your house , lest you share in their evil deeds. Also, they are all disobedient in the cults by denying and sitting under ( which is supporting) any teaching that denies the Trinity. The Trinity is biblically and doctrinally correct and Remnant Fellowship and other cults teach against the Trinity , so to be in these cults puts you in danger.

I went to school with the Sims and Leaman family. That they uprooted their whole family from one state to another to become leaders of this cult is mind-boggling. They were considered pillars of the community and a large business owner. It seems that this "church" was the perfect getaway to keep their money "within" and tax-free... I am proud of Michael for opening up and I believe every word he has to say against this cult.

Gwen told me that God would leave me if I didn't leave my church and join her church, and that we couldn't fellowship with our former church. I didn't join Remnant and I was taken off of her email list. This was January 2002, I think.

I knew the Lord long before I knew Gwen. I loved the weigh down workshop and led it at church but when it changed I could no longer be a part of it. I didn't want to be controlled by a person, only by the Holy Spirit.

I cannot imagine being so uncertain of myself or in such need of belonging and acceptance that I would lose my common sense and discernment to the degree that I would follow the teachings of that woman. I cannot fathom the appeal in any capacity. It is such a wildly bizarre story to me.
I feel the same, but then I think of all the fads and social mores of any given time that lots people participated in that I thought was weird. I think religious cults hold all the concern because it takes things deeper in the psyche, but honestly I can think of several movements (political, fads, etc) and thought bandwagons today that I’d equally perplexed as to what appeal or truth people see in them. People ‘’follow’’ those things too. Whether it’s being fanatical over The New Kids on the Block, or believing men have a conspiracy and desire to make all women sex slaves like in The Handmaiden’s Tale…. People are WEIRD. And we all like to think our own farts smell great.

Do you feel the same about scammers? You don't have to lack common sense to be influenced by stuff like this; if any kind of cult was that clear cut none would get scammed. The fact is there is similar stuff in here to what you see in church, and that's where it works; mixing what seems truth and ok with a lie. Also, we need to remember that great prophets were affected by manipulation and control in the Bible, so it seems there is a power in this sort of behaviour that causes fear, confusion etc that is able to bypass identity and discernment. . I'm concerned that people feel that only 'vulnerable' people can get affected. Anyone can get affected by this stuff in some way even if not fully in a cult like this. There are countless people who have been affected by scams like this and they're not all weak or vulnerable. They're precious people who often have great gifting themselves....rather like the prophets and kings did in the Bible. May all who are affected by this or other such scams or any form of manipulation or control in the church find peace, rest and freedom. And let the Kingdom come.

My 'ex' tried to take me a very similar church in Burleson Tx. Weight loss program, keeping files, breaking up marriages thru 'counseling' if the spouse wasnt completely committed to the church etc etc. l told the ex ld go if they didnt do 3 things being 1) get political. They blew that day 1. 2) Claim the earth is 6,ooo years old and 3) praise war and the military. They had marine color guard do a sword dance on stage and recruit in the lobby. lt took them a month to do this. We went wednesdays and Sundays. l never went back and they immediately put my ex up to run the singles night parties and told her to divorce me. lm betting this is waaaaay more common than people will admit.

I’ve lived across the street this church sits at off Franklin road it’s the first thing I’ve seen pulling out of our neighborhood for 32yrs. I’ve heard the stories since I moved here. The International Churches of Christ claim to be the "one true church", and also ostracize people who leave. I left both :) Even more trippy to learn that Ms. Gwen died in a plane crash headed to Mar-A-Lago. Whew. Grateful for this interview. I hope Michael Shamblin is doing alright and healing.
Wow! This does not sound like a Godly church! The daughter forgets what Jesus said "the first shall be last and the last first". She lifts herself and mother up and not Jesus. Would Jesus turn anyone away because of their weight? Its ok to lie? If you leave the Remnant you leave God? Jesus said He will never leave you or forsake you, that no one the Father has given Him can be taken from Him. That Christ died on the cross for all who believe and accept Him as Saviour . Repent, run from this church and find a bible teaching loving church that follows Christ. Our eternal life depends on that.

I do believe Gwen Shamblin was given truth from God in the very beginning. Regardless of her personal deterioration, I have always believed what she was teaching regarding weight loss was revolutionary. She was teaching mindful eating and intermittent fasting way back in the 90s before we even had todays more modern terms for them. I am deeply saddened how the enemy sought out and destroyed something that in the beginning was so beneficial for so many people, myself included. I did watch the continual spiral of weirdness over the years from afar and was always so sad that the enemy was keeping people from knowing a real truth just because of her odd appearance and her cultish church.
That special on her on HBO or whatever platform, was freaking amazing. It was put together so well, it was just bizarre enough to keep me interested, and I must admit, I re-watched again a few weeks ago...

The word Remnant is defined as a small portion that remains after the main portion no longer exists. So are they one of the factions of evangelicals that believe the rapture happened in the 1820s? (Birth of Mormonism, 7th Day Adventist, and the American Ammonite/Mennonite Movement took hold in that decade)
Yes. It sounds to me like a lot of “end times” ministries where they’re looking for the 144,000 people who will be allowed in heaven while everyone else perishes. “A small, surviving group”.

The word “rapture “ isn’t even in the AV, KJV, NKJV, NIV, RSV. “16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.” There is no “secret rapture” as “every eye shall see Him”!
When He returns the second time
“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.”
When the Bible speaks of “as a thief” it is talking about the fact that it will be UNEXPECTED because IF you expected the thief you would have been ready for him. He will come with a “great noise” and the “elements shall MELT with fervent HEAT”. Read the verse and play it out - the rapture deception tells people not to worry if you don’t make the rapture because after seven years you have another chance. It tells everyone that they will still be living on this earth with the Antichrist after the rapture. CLEARLY that isn’t so by this one verse alone, we don’t even need to look at all the others to debunk this deception as the verse tells us that “THE EARTH ALSO and the works that are therein shall be BURNED UP”. If the Earth is burned up how can anything or anyone be alive and living on it? This kind of crap is what people who don’t read or study the Bible believe. Idk exactly what the Mormons believe, but the SDAs don’t and never have. The original Millerites, who eventually became SDA (what was left of them) believed the second coming would happen in 1844 - NOT THE RAPTURE.

This is fully his real choice to disassociate himself from what he fully believes is a cult. Well he ever change his mind and go back? It's possible, he's done it before, but then probably not likely now that he's spoken out against it for the first time.
they didn't reject him necessarily from being overweight ( although they may have). It has to do with they think they are the only ones who are right with God because they walk in obedience per se ( but teaching against the concept of the Holy Trinity is disobedience because the Trinity is biblically and doctrinally correct). They feel he has left the only " obedient " church and therefore they can't fellowship with him because he is disobedient by leaving. This is why I feel they don't fellowship with him. But I think it is God's protection on Michael when they won't fellowship with him because in all reality, Michael shouldn't have fellowship with them because they are teaching false doctrine about God ( teaching against the Trinity like they do) and we are told in scripture not to fellowship with people promoting and teaching false doctrine, lest you share in their evil deeds. See 2 John, first chapter , verses 9-11.
