I love Jonny's guitar solos. It's... well I don't want to say "punky" bc the songs aren't really punk. But the solos definitely carries a lot of edges to them
the guitar "solo" Jonny rips in the documentary, "Meeting People Is Easy" when he's on stage and the camera is looking up at him is one of the greatest sounds I've ever heard in my entire life! It sounds like a melodic plane landing
He is a reluctant guitar hero. I love his vibe and he does it unconsciously. I just watched his Bending Hectic Live from Montreux solo…I’m not sure if I call his work soloing.. it’s transcendent. He has reimagined the role and the instrument he draws you in and it grooves in a strange way. Jimmy Page swung hard. Johnny ‘vibes’ for a lack of a better word while adding flourishes along with the whole band. That makes their music so unique and what a catalog. I constantly revisit finding new ideas that I missed. It’s in the dark corners where you find the light.
Thom hates that stuff. Look how muted Jonny was for the chorus of Thin Thing in the studio version for example. It's a shame; Thom has a complex about 'rock cliches' and doesn't want to seem like a quiet / loud' band so he basically hates any guitar rising above the tide line. It's his own insecurity. Look at how they recorded Bending Hectic too. His guitar is always turned down, buried or curtailed on record. I kind of wish Jonny and Tom Skinner would do something without him with another singer maybe if Thom doesn't want to continue The Smile.
My little bro plays in a band and they are always telling him to face the crowd because like Johnny he tends to face the speakers and gets lost in the music and its like he forgets that hes got an audience. Johnny is a muscal genius and then add Toms lyrical genius and you get the best band of our generation. And to think i saw them many years ago at a little venue called The Market Tavern just after they released Anyone can Play Guitar. Knew they'd be big but not THIS big.❤
Man. I know some folks would probably claim he's just playing random notes, but every time he freestyles he's doing it in the correct scales and rhythms. Radiohead just uses chords and scales that aren't too common in most popular music. There's no wrong notes. It's all deliberate and it's awesome.
The Go To Sleep clip, either the phone recording it was unable to pick up the rest of the band or it was edited to not include the other instruments, but Johnny Greenwood's playing on that track is some of the most inspired guitar work in the history of rock music.
I rub my wrist hard when going hard on electric which fucking weird. Because I never wrist slam on a old acoustic. I see why he wears a brace. Also glad you didn't die from your infection.
He’s just playing random shit through his computer program he made. The actual playing of that isn’t difficult and anyone can just hit completely random notes really fast and all over the place, where Jonny is really clever here is his application of this program in music, and the fact that HE programmed the software himself
He's "good" at almost any instrument, but he's not like trying to be the best at it by doing boring crazy shreds, he threat his instrument as a absolute creative tools and not just "guitar should be played like most guitar does", more of a "magic wand" to the song.
@@aperezto
Your fave Jonny Greenwood solo? Share it here!
My favorite is in House of Cards when he uses a coin and it just sounds like he's channeled another universe
paranoid android
There there
He plays guitar like it’s a saxophone.
Hahaha you’re not wrong
Nice take. Big melodic leaps. Most guitar players don't do that, especially since shredding is so popular.
Before the band changes the name, when they were On A Friday and Jonny didn't enter the group, they had a saxophonist!
I love Jonny's guitar solos. It's... well I don't want to say "punky" bc the songs aren't really punk. But the solos definitely carries a lot of edges to them
Yeah they have a unique taste to them for sure
They are angular and the timbre of the notes are harsh.

@@Jacecel that wouldn’t make sense under normal circumstances but with Johnny it’s spot on 👌🏼

It's a shame the album version of Go To Sleep cuts off so quickly. That experimental outro elevates the song.
A man of fine taste I see 👌🏼
I find you in every radiohead/the smile comment section haha

@@ChinaboatmanWith Josh Homme would be wild. I think they’d complement each other pretty well too.
0:26 sounded like mission impossible
2:22 he turned his guitar into a regi pokemon

I'd rather hear the best music than see fake acting on stage.
He's got one the most unique feelings I know
Johnny , thom, Radiohead, the Smile …. My life

Nice dream and Go Slowly both have really cool solos
Nice Dream is a beast of a solo

That mission impossible solo was unexpected. I personally think his finest solos are on HTTT live songs like 2+2=5 and There There.
That first solo is fantastic!
I feel there is a Radiohead period just around the corner ❤
Very expressive guitarrist a unique voice like issac brock, stephen malkmus etc
My favorite guitarist. Homie is a master of melodic modalities.
His solos are Pure Energy. Period.
Talented guy fck made his guitar sound like a zx spectrum loading
😂
Solo 4 is awesome. What fx is Jonny using here?
Great question, anyone know?
Max/Msp patch or sum it’s some kind of glitch effect he’s programming it
@@mynameisjohn987 nice!!
Theres a pedal that does the same thing by the king of gear i think

Love Radiohead but they really need a new lighting designer...
Sounds like you've never seen them actually live. They need no such thing.
Seen them three times and I agree. I would like to see them in better lighting. Too dark.
Banana so is so underreted
Couldn’t agree more 👌🏼
My favorite guitarist ever!
all the best solos are played on guitars
Correct
If bizarre, you mean brilliant, then yes
Haha I kinda meant both!

I can't understand what he is doing in Go To Sleep 😂

he's just glitching out the guitar using computer stuff

Lmao. Sounds like a dog in the garden. Only Johnny could find and play that. 1:21
he look evil with guitar he look cute without guitar
Hella cute
Go to sleep he’s just off in his own little world lol
Less notes but super hard to copy

Sometimes Im not sure Jonny can actually play the guitar.
He is good at it but he really gets nervous in stage, is easily notable.

Weird solos or... "I'm bored".
Frusciante se lo come y escupe.
🎸🌶
no tienen nada que ver, son brutales los dos
En Radiohead hay un track llamado JUST que le rinde homenaje a Frusciante cuando este andaba de indigente. amigo!!!!!
