Now about the name Ghana, it wasn’t Danquah who gave us the name. The first person to suggest the name Ghana was Rev. J. B. Anaman in his book, The Gold Coast Guide published in 1895. Next and building on this was Lady Luggard, wife of the infamous Lord Luggard who spearheaded what came to be known as indirect rule. Luggard's book, "A Tropical Dependency" also included the stories of the empires of Mali and Songhai and was used in Achimota in the 1920s.
At the time of his death, the legendary James Kwegir Aggrey was working on a major history thesis to establish the historical connection between the people of Gold Coast and not only Ghana empire, but Mali, Songhai, Egypt and Abyssinia. This was not published because he died before he could finish it.
Rev. W. T. Balmer who used to teach at Mfantsipim also wrote about this connection to Ghana empire in 1926.
These aroused the interest of J. B. Danquah who published his book, Akim-Abuakwa Handbook in 1928, two years after Balmer's book and 33 years after J. B. Anaman first made the suggestion. However Danquah in his book proposed that the territory should be called "AKANLAND" instead of Gold Coast. This drew sharp criticism and he then suggested "AKAN-GA" as a replacement.
The newspaper, West Africa, again criticised this saying, "it appears Dr. Danquah's view of nationhood does not extend to the non-Akan population of the Northern Territories". Upon further deliberations, Danquah then suggested "NEW GHANA".
Meanwhile in 1948 after the riots and following the arrest of the UGCC leaders, some students and teachers of Mfantsipim and St. Augustine's College embarked on demonstration to demand their release. These students were dismissed and Kwame Nkrumah founded a school for them called GHANA NATIONAL COLLEGE.
At independence in 1957 the name GHANA was eventually adopted and to quote Nkrumah, "we take pride in the name, not out of romanticism but as an inspiration for the future".
This is how you became a Ghanaian rather than a Gold Coaster.

Nkrumah's idea of various government housing in Accra was to repatriate the poor unplanned crowded citizenry along the coast and build a twentieth century Marina but was met with enmity and sabotage, just listen to this man spew venom and hate of Dr Nkrumah.

Very interesting, and yes thank you Mr Attah-Mensah. Mr Attoh Quarshie speak a lot for the people who were there. I would however say that I take offence at being called not a real de Graft-Johnson, because of my height. The name "de Graft-Johnson" comes from one man, it is one family and tall or short, we are most definitely all 'real'. Attoh Quarshie presents a unique insight, and he's right in many of the things he said, which can be verified. At the same time he does himself an injustice and portrays a significant lack of balance and courtesy in his presentation of his story. As Ghanaians, we must all be grateful for men like him who gave of themselves to enable a a Ghana to be born.

Talk about the coup you plotted with Nyaho & co. Nkrumah sent you to jail for doing nothing, maybe you were the most important person in Ghana then. You have a record of trying to oppose statutory authority. You opposed Busiah for chosing Akuffo Addo as Exec President and he arrested you, but for Nkrumah you did nothing. A lot of bullshit. Before Nkrumah, UGCC was an elite club with no branches beyond Accra and a few towns. It had no programme for organisation or mobilisation and did not even have a bank account.
None of the founders were willing to invest in the group or spend time managing it. That's why they brought in Nkrumah, with the promise of paying him 100 pounds a month plus car. They couldn't even pay that and had to settle on 25 pounds.
It was Nkrumah who opened branches around the country, forming the Verandah Boys along the way. He got to know the country better than any of the so-called "founders", which explains why he became popular with the youth, who insisted that he should form his own party.
This semi-literate fool may have been there but he's clearly biased and bitter.
Nkrumah was a full-blooded Ghanaian, from the Asona clan (his father's side) and Anonas from this mother's.
And even if his father was a Liberian, so what? Pa Grant's ancestor were from the Ivory Coast. Does that diminish his stature in Gold Coast/Ghanaian politics. It's a shame that the host was so ill-prepared, more interested in the tribes of people than the substantive discussion.

Well said, and thank you for your explanation. The man is very bitter and biased. No matter what he says, The man and the UGCC group members could never take Nkrumah's achievements from him and one can see in the man's false facial expressions of his false stories and false allegations against Nkrumah. Shame on him at that time for the his fake stories information about Ghana and Africa.

Mr attoh quarshie your story about nkrumah some are not factual. Especially about his birth country. Nkrumah is a pure nzema and a Ghanaian. You're some how bitter about your incarceration. That's why you seem not to say anything good about him. Yes nkrumah did some wrong things but he's the founder of Ghana. Take it easy if you are still alive. I wish you long live

The facts were clear that nkrumah had two of his Masters in the us and another in the uk. In the course of pursuing his PhD he accepted the call to become the general secretary. He indeed struggled to find his way through studies but it didn't mean he never studied. Mr. Attoh, how could he be pursuing his PhD in theology as u said earlier, if he didn't have any qualifications? The ugcc had it's own propaganda machinery as well. Besides, ghanaians are more and more discerning and won't consume just one source of information so please give us a break.

According to the US immigration and naturalization records his name is actually Francis Nwia! His name is later hyphen to become Francis Nwia-Kofi Nkrumah when he applied for a student visa from London to study in US. Kofi is born on Friday and Kwame is born on Saturday. There is no way a Ghanaian will forget this if indeed he/she was name after the day he was born. This contradict the original document of the US government. This evident alone confirms the account of Attah. Why will an official documents from US and UK be different from his name Kwame Nkrumah! And why did he get rid of his original name Francis Nwia if he was true Ghanaian. I respect his work but the truth is the truth! I truly admire him in all aspect of his life. However, those who came after him do not hold a place in our history!

I believe you're not Akan that's why you don't understand why he has Kofi in his name. Kofi Nwai is the name of his grandfather he was named after. But he was a Saturday born. This is common in the tribes in the western region, esp Ahanta, Nzema etc....
I am a typical example. I was born on Saturday but was named after my grandfather who has Kofi in his name. Thus my school name bears the Kwame in my documents whiles at home, I'm called by my grandfathers name.
