    I'm a knitter/crocheter hoping to get into spinning because I thought making my own yarn out of yarn scraps from my fiber arts would be so awesome! This video has inspired me, and I'll definitely learn more about spinning at my local fiber arts fair this spring.

      Spinning will be a wonderful addition to your knitting and crocheting.

      Be warned, the rabbit hole is deep. Spinning leads to having lots of recently shorn sheep fleece, then you'll want to experiment with dyeing your own, blending, then comes weaving. Worst part, you start viewing family and friends' pets as potential sources of fiber to blend, and some even end up with their own flock of sheep, or alpaca, or angora rabbits. :)
      @JeneratedDesigns Thanks for the inspiration. Had a mismatched dyelot on a couple of braids and now I'm thinking I'll unpick the plies (never wet set them) of the least favoured one and pull out the drum carder.

      Yes that rabbit hole is deep. And if you have land you'll want some fiber animals too☺️

    I haven't done this before, but I have added 1.5" snips of sock yarn across wool roving, then put more roving on top before you run it through the drumcarder. This makes a great confetti yarn. You might want to run it through twice to open up the snips more. Thanks for sharing. Blessings.

      I love adding confetti to a fiber batt, you can get some great texture that way.

    The thick and thin I had used from places like JoAnns and hobby stores were a sorry excuse. Your yarn looks strong and beautifully done.

    • @JeneratedDesigns
      @JeneratedDesigns  ปีที่แล้ว

      Your so kind. I do like spinning my own, you can control how much twist is in the yarn and that can improve the strength.

    I enjoyed this will need to return and study the methods
    more. I'll be sharing this with my youthful learners this summer for sure. Need to fix the antique drum carder that I have been carrying around in the car. I am not sure what is missing. Do you have pictures and explanations that I can study to make this a working machine again? Thank you. I'll be back!!

    Beautiful yarn! Can I do this with Acrylic? I have a huge bag of chopped bits of all colours about 4-8 inch long. Not sure what to do with it! But another idea other than re- spinning it would be to add into unspun wool as it is. Would this work as an Art yarn?

    • @JeneratedDesigns
      @JeneratedDesigns  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes you can use acrylic, if the pieces are really short you might want to blend in some wool which will help hold the finished yarn together. But I have done a batt that was 100% acrylic and it creates a nice art yarn.

    Thank you! I have a stash of drum carded yarn/fiber scraps but haven’t figured out how to spin them. Same with pet “fleece.” 😂 First time I’ve heard of core spun yarn with thread autowrap. Can I ask what you used for the “core?” Thank you. 💗

    • @JeneratedDesigns
      @JeneratedDesigns  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I usually use my 8/2 or 8/4 cotton yarn
      Mohair works well as a core, you just need something strong.

    Got a bunch of roving in a mixed yarn bag at an estate sale. Basically for free. Was wondering what to do with it. Now I'm inspired to grab a couple of brushes (we have long-haired cats and dogs) and add some of my yarn snippets. I'm going to even try some of the synthetics and blends, see what happens. What could it hurt, right?
    THANK YOU!

      Not quite sure I understand the question, but I used the drum carder to blend the colors more. You can just use hand cards or brushes to blend the fibers together.

  • @doralevitt2879
    @doralevitt2879 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Does it have to be wool or can it be acrylic too?

    • @JeneratedDesigns
      @JeneratedDesigns  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Use any fiber you want. I usually do a blend of wool, acrylic and even cotton. Some fiber are easier to brush out than others.

  • @SagasInStitches
    @SagasInStitches ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't understand why you would cut it, if it is wool. Why not just rip it into shorter pieces so you don't break the fibers into too short strands?

    • @JeneratedDesigns
      @JeneratedDesigns  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can definitely use longer strands. Smaller sections make it easier to card or brush the yarn back into spinable fiber.

    • @SagasInStitches
      @SagasInStitches ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JeneratedDesigns Aye, I just wondered why you would cut it with scissors and not rip it apart, cause your shortening the fibers, seeing it as cutting it with scissors makes tiny pieces you'd end up carting out and throw away. If you'd rip it, there'd be even less waste. Just a thought. I spin myself but from new fleece and a long strand is much prefered. Just a thought and wonder why the cutting.

    Sorry i mesn it was 90 deg on the carder from the way you had combed it...

    • @JeneratedDesigns
      @JeneratedDesigns  ปีที่แล้ว

      I try to place on the carder going the same direction from how it was brushed, try to keep the fibers all going the same direction. I don't know if I'm explaining that well enough.

    • @ludouglas1
      @ludouglas1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes thank you you did explain it but it doesn't look like the fibres are in the same direction. I'll find the time stamp. It's the yellow that looks like its not going thru the way you first brushed it.

    • @ludouglas1
      @ludouglas1 ปีที่แล้ว

      At 12.43 the last piece of yellow looks a diff direction but maybe it doesn't matter?

    • @ludouglas1
      @ludouglas1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh no please don't be worried. I'm just trying to figure it all out. :-) i said for 20 yrs I'd never spin yarn lolol and ive started spindle spinning and just bought an espinner. My teacher made art yarn but didnt brush it. It's tricky to spin but I just went wth it and have made it into art yarn.
