FF8: how to defeat X- ATM092

- This is a really easy way to defeat X- ATM092 on your SeeD exam without all the hassle other guides show you. All you need is about 30 Thunder's per character and a few Double's drawn from Elvoret. I am a slightly higher level than usual because I had been going for the 75+ kills to get a bonus on this mission.
The only reason not to destroy this robot is to see an fmv of quistis using machine gun like a bad ass beauty

Though this is an old video, i just beat him in two moves. The bonus you receive for killing it is redundant since your timer went under 20:05 so you couldn't have gotten a seed rank of 10. All you need is ifrit junctioned to squall. Learn strength up by % both of them and equip them. Mod 5 abyss worm cards into 100 tornado magics and give it to squall's strength stat. Card mod 5 blitz cards into 100 thundaga spells and junction to squall's element attack. Finish the elvoret fight with squall in the yellow HP wise. When you fight this thing one hit with squall will hit for 2000hp instantly knocking it down. Follow up with renzokuken which will hit for about 12000 instantly killing it. I was about level 16 and had 21:05 left on the timer which gave me a seed rank of 10 which is the highest you can get
wow that's as simple as dismantling and reassembling a car engine geez how about I just kill him as much as I can on the first encounter run the rest of the time and get the seed rank it gives me.
Well that's fine too. I didn't say you had to do it the way I explained. I just gave an alternative to killing this thing without fighting it for like 10 minutes.

Really surprised me this. I didn't think it was possible to kill it without the cutscene after I over killed it a few times further up the tower. I checked for a video like this after seeing it mentioned in a guide for the perfect SeeD score.

Pretty good, but I got a better strategy:
Squall: Junction 100 waters on str, and 100 thunders on elm-attack. Keep his health in the yellow and cast protect. Keep on unleashing the renzokukens.
Zell: Give him Quezcoatl with boost and Summag+10% and Summag+20% learnt. Keep on summoning. Casting takes longer then thunder but if you have summag+10% and summag+20% the damage is ultimately much more...
Selphie: Cast double, then thunders all the way. Heal others if necessary.

you can't destroy X-ATM092 on the very first encounter. (When he drop on you from the tower) It is recommended to fight him after shooing the dog for extra points.
You can only defeat X-ATM092 on the bridge. Anywhere elde it’s invincible.
It's appalling how the sound on PC version is so much worse than PS1 version. It's embarrasing how Squenix handles ports, seriously.

no, that's selphie responding to the robot's recovery.
The damage you deal cant exceed his maximum HP.
For example if you are level 1, his hp is 5000, so if you want to destroy it, you need to first knock it down by dealing around 4000 damage, then hit it again while it is down, for more then 5000.
A couple of suggestions for the powergamers out there: If you really want to kill this thing, you should do the following prior to beginning the mission (before changing into uniform so it doesn't effect your exam score):
--Train Squall with Quezocotl summoning such that his compatibility is maxed (1000, iirc). This will let you summon it very quickly for a much more powerful lightning attack - so fast it might even be worth using to break the repair cycle, since it doesn't sit there long enough to take much damage and get KOed.
--Train Quezocotl to get the Card Mod refine ability and it, Shiva and Ifrit to get all of their magic refining abilities. Then play a LOT of Triple Triad and mod your cards into things that then refine into higher level magics. Look at a refining chart to figure out what you want. It shouldn't be too hard to get a nice collection of Thundaga spells to throw at him.
--If that's still not enough, train up all of your GF's stat junction and elemental attack junction skills. Shiva and Ifrit can both get Strength and Elemental Attack junctions, so give those to Zell and Selphie, with Thundaga elemental attack and the best strength booster you can get at this stage - probably another -aga level spell. Squall gets left with Quezocotl since you can train up his compatibility beforehand; he should get the best magic boost you can give him and some spare thundagas. I'm not sure which will do better, Quezocotl spamming or double-thundaga spamming, but either way, you should be dishing out truly obscene amounts of damage.
It's unlikely you'll be able to kill the mech in time to get the perfect score from the timer (25+ minutes left when you reach the submarine), but you'll definitely be done faster than this video shows, so it's unlikely you'll finish the exam with the theoretical perfect score of 11 (10 for a perfect exam score without the mech kill bonus, 1 full rank for the bonus points from the kill.)
Also, if you always kill the machine, it's worth looking up the FMV for escaping it at the beach after you kill it and finish the mission. It's short, but Quistis is pretty badass with that machine gun.
Leave this to the pros bro cause what you said is still way too much work that isn't needed. All you have to do is junction 100 Tornados to Squall's STR stat. You can get those from the Windmill item that you get from card modding an Abyss Worm. Takes like 10 minutes. Squall's attacks when then do around 800 damage per hit. You can thank me later ;)

Interesting vid. Doing it this way guarantees you an automatic S-rank on your time rating to make up for the time you lose and I think you get extra bonus points, but it has the drawback that you don't get to see the AWESOME FMV of Quistis blowing it apart with a chaingun.
I have to know though, what's so significant about fighting it on the bridge in particular?

Only downside is killing the thing lowers your seed score upon completion same with jumping down after selfie
Killing it gives you a big bonus. Also, I don't think you get penalized for hitting it, you just spend some time, and the later you return to the beach the lower your score, but if you kill it quickly you get a better score than if you escape it.
Just by curiosity, how does the sequence end after the battle ? I remember that there is a cinematic at the end of this mission, where the X-ATM almost gets you before being finished by the machine gun .. Does someone know ?

You run all the way to the landing area of the beach, Quistis is standing there saying "Hurry up. Get in" or something similar, then you just enter the boat and the game goes on as always.

I think the cut scene makes keeping him alive worth it. Killing him makes the end of the Dollet mission to anticlimactic
But the 100 bonus points to the exam come in handy!
How much damage do you actually have to do to him, if you stop the repair process by dealing too much damage while he's repairing does that make any difference and does he level up like other bosses?
Fighting that thing multiple times is the best way to max out many of your gf abilities as it gives 50 ap everytime it falls
You forgot one thing when you're running on the bridge and it jumps over you soon as you hear it running towards you run back towards the tower it will jump over you again soon as it jumps run towards the city and you can get off the bridge without having to fight it

When he's repairing, your attacks are meaningless. Also, did you level up with your GS? Because the enemies level up accordingly

I pretty much abused x-atom cos when you defeat him you get 50ap and you can do it multiple times. Though my time was terrible a lot of the good stuff was out the way with GF abilities
You also lose points in the exam every time you retreat after the first time when you don’t have a choice

Not really doing good on stocking magic, never knew you can do double attacks, or do I have to earn it somehow?
You can double your attacks by drawing the move "double" from that monster boss before X- ATM092
You have to draw the "Double" magic from certain enemies, but it is a fairly common spell.
If you defeat those robot, you will not gain FMV Quistis shoting this boss.

I just use squalls limit break. Attach thunder to his weapon and any str.

There is a trick on getting 50 ap like 15 times with this boss

I accidentally killed this thing when I didn't even know it was possible. Was like level 30-40 and my GFs blew it up.
Your only mistake was not making thunder more easily accessible in the magic menu.
and you don't even Boost your Quazocotile, wth man.
the sad thing is when i first started playing this game i always assumed boost was for boosting the ap you got after battle x D Until one day i pressed i think its square and it said press this button to boost. biggest facepalm ever lol
You don't really want to fight it on the bridge, you want to fight it in town. If you kill the mech early you will have random encounter battles still on the way to the beach. This eats up your timer. Its best to dodge it completely all through town and fight it at the cafe encounter, the last place you can fight it. Thus, after you are done you won't have any random encounters slowing you up.
My brain hurts.. I never knew that he would stop healing himself after 5 times, I don't think that's *ever* happened to me. I've always had to knock him down and then blast him with 4k or so worth of damage to finish him off with GF boost and limits. WTF??

What annoys me about Boost is that it doesn't tell you how to Boost.
I went -YEARS- Without knowing that I hold down the select button on the PS1 to get rid of the HUD so I could boost my damage.
just curious, if thunder element is this fucker's weakness, then why not summon the thunder GF? although it will take a while before it is activated but you get more devastating results. just saying though
Per hit? Sure, but not always better for damage per second. When I was running this mission, double-thunder did about half the damage of the GF, and it's MUCH faster, both in animation, and "active battle time".
In my case, this might very well be because I had been leveling up other abilities than +XX Summon magic (such as card and card mod).
Looking at 7:15 and 8:30, it seems to take about 6 seconds of animation time to do 2x235=450ish damage by thunder, compared to about 25 seconds to do about a 1050 damage with the summon.
Not worth it, unless you really need the GF for the extra HP.
yes thunder is his weakness. if you used the magic booster on the steam version you can get thundara and that can deal more damage than thunder
They have a few useful abilities besides makes less gf leveling later on lol

Well... since FFVIII has a very exploitable system, here's how I did. It's not better, but it makes everything so easy until actual level up phase (Step 13)
Step 1: Have Quelzacoat learn "Card" first. Ifrit fight and low level monster in fire cavern. If you doing right, Squall should stay at level 7 by the time Quelz learned "Card". Set Quelz to learn "Card Mod". Needless to say, you should set I-Mag and F-Mag Refine for Shiva and Ifrit.
Step 2: Back to the garden, get minimog and Quistis card. Make a detour to Balamb Town, go to the station, challenge the card queen until the trade rule change to all (you don't have to play, just ask her to play until the rule show up).
Step 3: Play Triple-triad with the folks until you have enough cards for Tornado (It's just 5 Abyssal Worms) and Thundaga (Something like 10 Blitz card, maybe).
Step 4: Back to the garden, do the stuff, get to Dollet, save the game.
Step 5: Equip every GF and your best magic on Seifer. Get Zell and Squall K.O-ed so they don't gain any xp.
Step 6: Using Seifer's limit break to grind until you have Card Mod, T Mag refine, F Mag refine, I Mag refine, Str+20%, Str+40%. This took a while, but well, you need to kill 100 opponents for max Seed exam though.
Step 7: Now when Seifer leaves, equip Squall with Ifrit, Junction his Str with Tornado, Elem-Atk with Thundaga, Str +20% and Str +40%. You should have 150+ Str at this point (No, this is not the goal, just set it this way for easier AP farming).
Step 8: Acquire Siren, blah blah, right after the countdown start, equip it to anyone, just set her to learn L-Magic.
Step 9: You could either choose to kill the spider or do AP trick. Killing it near the rendezvous point prove to be the best route for Seed exam point (Shorter time to retreat = better, Less time to encounter X-ATM092 = better, killing it = more point).
Step 10: Get Ifrit, learn Time/Space mag refine and (Very important) Enc-None by grinding T-Rexes in the Training Center. This could be done very easily with Squall have Blizzaga in Elem-Atk and around 150+ Str. Don't level up, just hit them a few time then use Card.
Step 11: Play some Triple Triad until you have enough card for 300 Pain, 300 Curaga, 100 or 200 Regen, 300 Demi, 300 Quake, 300 Meltdown, 300 Break, 300 Death... very easy with basic rule since you have Seifer, Quistis, Ifrit, Diablos and Minimog card now. You should have a team capable enough for every thing untill mid Disk 3 now.
Step 12: Play with Enc-None until you have any GF with x4 ability AND Cactuar GF. Cactuar has HP bonus, Str bonus, Mag bonus, Vit bonus and Spr bonus, abilities that give your character a guarantee stats gain whenever they are level up.
Step 13: Go to Islands closest to Hell, save, equip the character you want to level up with every GFs, set the bonus abilities (HP,Str,Vit,Spr for the boys and Hp,Mag,Vit,Spr for the girls) junction them well with Hit and Speed, Death for Status attack. K.O other two. Grinding till they reach lvl 100. Repeat.
Step 14: By optimizing stats this way, you can reach very high HP, Str/Mag, Vit, Spirit with just high tier magics junction and some tweak with ability, while top tier magics like Aura, Holy, Ultima, Flare, Meteor... could go to
Elem-Def junction.
That's right. With the right setup, you can have most element and null or absorbed, immunity to most debuffs.
Step 15: Of course, non-elemental attacks still hurt like crap and you most likely have to use a Holy War or some Hero in tough fight.
Bonus step: For min-max players: You can always farm Gaea's Ring, Monk's Code, Knight's Code, Hundred Needles, Luck-J Scrolls to refine stats up item, but they took buttloads of time and efforts. I got all my six characters maxed out without Junction for around 300 hours of grinding, but that's another story.
Was just replaying this area...and didn't kill it...Pooey!

I have level fifty squall, level forty four zell and thundaga att-j. My renzokuken does 5.3k - 5.5k and now I find out instead of fighting and running which gives unlimited ap I'm supposed to just fight. Wow, do I feel dumb lol.

Uwalo Draw from the caterpillar monster in the forests on Balamb. Bite Bugs give you fire. And you can draw blizzard from the fish at the beach or the jelly fish looking monsters by the mountains. You can also draw silence and one other status effect magic from the fly trap monsters in the training grounds inside the garden. I usually spend the first 30 min to an hour doing this to get my guys as strong as possible before the SeeD exam
Ive tried this like over and over and he can not be defeated. Its impossible. I have had him repair him self like 9 times in a row, got 50 APX9 yet i still am un able to destroy him. This guys game sucks, his characters are weak and mine are much more powered up yet i can't do it. The wiki guide said you only need to knock him down 5 times and then you can destroy him. I even used a calculator. I inflict well over 5900 Damage each time from the beginning of the battle till when he repairs him self. I can only do it so many times before i run out of time.
I even use thundaga coupled with double with a higher Magic rating of around 37 for squall. Yet this guy just uses regular thunders, bull shit. There has to be something i am not doing wrong and the wiki and strategy guide are both wrong.
+Artimes X Walkthroughs my suggestion is to try junctioning 100 tornado to str for Squall and Zell, and thunder (or better) to elem-atk (not really necessary though), then just do regular physical attack or LB since it's faster than casting magic.

I figured it out and it was extremely easy with my party line up. Like i said, there was one crucial thing i was missing and the whole reason why it wasn't working. The monster basically has an actual life line HP that carries over into subsequent fights. Well if you cause to much damage well he is down, he repairs him self, there for completely restoring all his HP. I am not taking bout the 5000 it takes to take him down each time, i mean his entire hidden full hp.
The solution? When he is down, TO NOT attack him. Let him self repair him self, in doing so he does this only with his 5000 HP limit and not his over all HP. There for you can do this over and over again and eventually his full HP will be depleted. Another reason you can tell if its working is if the party members start complaining why the monster is not dying.
Hm... If you damage him too much with one move (like with over powered GF), the 'self repair' sequence won't show up but he will still get repaired to full hp and the 5 times knock down rule doesn't apply here (so basically it's down to 5 times the 'repair sequence' notif show up for it to count into the 5 knock downs rule, probably why you manage to knock him down more than 5 time and he still isn't defeated). And there's no use attacking him when he's repairing himself bcos he will always recover to his full HP after the 'repair sequence' ends.
This is the reason why I always beat him with a low level party junctioned with the strongest possible magic obtainable that early (Tornado to STR) so I can control the damage with phys attack ~800 (maybe a little higher than that). Not to mention quicker XD
Congratulations for finally beating him ^^ He's a very easy (not to mention exploitable for his AP) Boss, but the method to beat him is pretty tricky sure.
