Some people don’t enjoy the skill in ventriloquism, but I think it’s HILLARIOUS because the jarring nature of when he talks/sings in his real voice, and isa just Good
I still can't go over the amount of people complaining about the ventriloquism. The play is meant to be a vaudeville so it makes sense for the actor to actually do the ventriloquism if he can and he still moves his mouth around and talks for her. There were even people complaining about the long note? WHAT???
I love it! I saw the actor in the Korean version of this number doing it so well and it made me happy to see. The whole point of the number is that Billy is orchestrating the whole thing, what better way to show that than him literally putting words in Roxie’s mouth?

the woman does say almost.... plus you want to see it done with true ventriloquism look for the Korean production on youtube th-cam.com/video/u0mU5IS6gcc/w-d-xo.html Choi Ja Rim actually DOES ventriloquism in the number - turns out he had trained in his younger days..
Since the leads are wearing mic's, they don't need as much effort to project their voices. On Broadway, they wouldn't use microphones, so they would have to project their voices more. Of course, in live theater, you don't have camera close-ups so you would barely notice his lips move, but as pointed out in other comments, part of the joke/humor is that you can see his lips move.
3:12 I love that he does that move and the doll gets up and continues ((I know almost nothing about this show just a few songs I’ve heard and never seen))
righttt like that part makes me laugh so hard. but the guy is actually her lawyer and shes a real person, he's just feeding her lines to say so that her sentence will be reduced or maybe make her not convicted
Very nice, she is good and he has a remarkable tenor voice. But after seeing the movie first, I'm spoiled and now expect something like the movie scene every time I see a performance of this number, though that's impossible to do on stage. One thing I realized lately is that in the stage musical, the lawyer Flynn is actually a lover of Mary Sunshine, the female reporter who's in many scenes. That's not clear at all from the movie, where she was played by Christine Baranski.
The only thing I feel miss from this is the ventriloquist dropping the appearances in the last "when we both reached for the gun" before the big dance and the finale. Like, it was always my favourite part of the prestation, how after having well crafted this story and made Roxy says it, he drops the act when the word is finally out as truth, because whatever he does now, everyone knows the lie and accept it as truth. Other than that, boy was this really amazing !
This is impressive from a technical standpoint, with the vocal throwing and all, but I think it misses the point of the original musical--the fact that we SEE Billy's lips move during other variations of this number highlights just how little he actually cares about going above the law, as well as how blind--or complicit--the press corps is in his form of legal theater. It kind of robs the underlying subtext of the number by having him, ironically, actually be skilled at ventriloquism. Still, great rendition, and incredibly, incredibly fun to watch.
Station 5 I agree, it still has the subtext though of what you’re talking about, however in this version it’s just a little more complex to understand (especially if someone hasn’t watched other versions)
Well Mama did say notice how his mouth almost never moves which kinda alludes to ventriloquism here, so it's not much of a surprise he actually does ventriloquism during this song, compared to most versions where his lips move more
I love this piece, one of my two most favourite songs from Chicago and the most fun to play. I know both the lyrics and the music by heart as I am a pianist trained in classical as well as modern music by a professional theatre and philharmonic orchestra piano player and I can honestly say this “are you kidding?” is the best one out there (and yes, that is the best part as far as I am concerned by which I judge all performances of this song). And for that alone, it deserves every bit of recognition.
Excellent observation, I got to see Gwen Verdon perform this many many times (I was an usher in my HS/college days). I agree this interpretation was excellent. The "are you kiddin'" needs to be cynical and totally in Roxie's character, or it doesn't anchor the performance. If that's the right analogy?
Do half of these commenters complaining about the production realize this is nothing new? This is the same production/ general direction/ costumes of the 1996 revival which brought the musical back into public eye and is the definitive version.
A lot of people think they hold a definitive opinion on whether this was a good version or not. Billy was very skilled, that's hard to deny, but it's really a matter of taste whether you liked his real ventriloquism or not.
I mean he was moving around a lot beforehand, and probably has been performing a lot in the days leading up to it. I interpret it as Billy’s true talent is only really his manipulation, and that in and of himself he’s not all that impressive. I know it was an accident but I feel it could easily be treated as part of the act!

All the comments about the ventriloquism, but his voice is overly cartoony for no real reason. He could get across that he’s doing her voice without the silly voice.
