    Lowered mini trucks are the epitome of old school car audio. If you were into the car scene in the early to mid 1990's, you know these trucks. Lowered, crazy paint jobs, wire wheels and of course boomin' stereo systems! Here we have a demo of the 1990 Mazda B2200 nicknamed "Fantastic Voyage" owned by Jason Williams. What a true time machine! See the truck as it was created in the mid 1990's! Stereo is classic old school including:
    Alpine CDM-7823 Head Unit
    Alpine CHM-S600 6 disc CD Changer
    Audio Control 3XS Electronic Crossover
    (2) Orion 225 HCCA Digital Reference Amplifiers
    (4) Orion XTR 15 DVC Ferrofluid Injected Subwoofers
    (4) Soundstream SS 5.0 midranges
    (2) Soundstream SS 1.0 tweeters
    Sega Genesis Game system with optional CD-ROM drive
    4.3" Color TV
    A very impressive facet of this truck is the fact the Orion 225 HCCA amplifiers are rated at 50 watts each. That's right, 25 watts per channel at 4 ohms. The 225 HCCA is an example of the classic "cheater" amp meaning it was capable of MUCH more power at lower ohm loads. The 225 sub amp for example, is loaded down to 1/2 ohm mono and putting out over 500 watts! I know, 500 watts is not much by today's standards, but watch to see what it can do with the ultra-efficient XTR 15 DVC subs!
    Big thanks to Jason for the demo! If you are at a car show in the NC/SC/VA area and see Jason's Mazda, make sure to stop by and chat with him!

    Setups like this are what got me into loving car audio in the first place. Nowdays you need 3 high output alternators and 16 batteries just for a few 15's.

      Not always. I'm running 2 Kicker Solo-Baric L7 15" dual 2ohm on a single Soundstream AR1.8000D monoblock with 2 extra batteries and stock charging system in a 1992 Chevy Caprice wagon. Used to have 5 of the 15" Solo-Baric setup in my previous Caprice wagon with the stock charging system.

      @@bullriderinwrangler1 I could put a 30K amp on my stock alternator, doesn't mean I would make anywhere near 30K

    • @Half_Gassed
      @Half_Gassed 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You make that statement as if all that would be for the same outcome. But it's not, not by a long shot. Something of that build caliber would obviously be for way more bass output and competition, this is an everyday driver setup.

  • @wal
    @wal  11 ปีที่แล้ว +46

    So true! Not to mention, the subs were "only" getting around 500W total for all 4! Most 15's you see these days need 1kW or more EACH to move lots of air. Efficiency and box design goes a long way. Too bad there's more money in making the subs less efficient, thus requiring larger amps, bigger wire, more batteries, bigger alts, etc.

    • @jasonostack9319
      @jasonostack9319 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I dig it! I had one of the og 225hcca’s way back. I haven’t built anything in a long time, but I would imagine even though current subs aren’t as efficient, modern class D efficiency amps would more than make up for that, and either “break even” or exceed the overall electrical efficiency, no?

    • @LowetheTechGuy
      @LowetheTechGuy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jasonostack9319 I don't think so. I wish I had the $$ to buy this Hcca 225 on ebay so we could test it out.
      *We could test efficiency of the 225 and old subs against a similar sub but modern and efficient and a modern amp.
      This truck is dope AF!

    • @LowetheTechGuy
      @LowetheTechGuy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually I know that low power, (500w) has scored higher DB than higher power in competition. I forget what league but it is in the 500w class and like up to 1,800w class and the 500w record was higher than 1,800w class. It's all about box design efficiency and the correct amount of cabin space because depending on sealed, ported, trunk, wall, 6th order or 4th order, the cabin plays a huge roll in the final outcome. I'm still learning but study acoustics and you'll see what I mean. In 6th order you have the rear sealed box/chamber inside another bigger chamber which is inside another chamber that is the cabin. Then you have doors open or closed, windows up or down. Smd forum has a good bit of info on it.

    • @jasonostack9319
      @jasonostack9319 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@LowetheTechGuy that’s kind of my point. From a pure $/watts perspective, car audio gear is less expensive. Especially if you take into account inflation. We also didn’t have the high efficiency class d amps back then. The 225hcca is roughly a 400watt amp for roughly $600. You can get gobs of class d power for $600 today. I would think that could pretty easily make up for efficiency differences, or free up some bank for a higher efficiency sub.

    • @LowetheTechGuy
      @LowetheTechGuy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jasonostack9319 oh yeah I was agreeing and learning myself. I didn't realize that subs were so inefficient nowadays. In that case, my Infinity kappa k600 I just bought for $120 with an Alpine Pdx 4.100 should run my 2 Wolfram Ti-12 d2's pretty descent huh? It's a 2 ohm amp with 35a x 2 fuses so 35×2×14.4×0.8=806.4 watts into 2 ohms Mono. The Ti-12's are rated 750w-1500w max. They have copper Vc's so I'm thinking they will be efficient and do ok until I buy a broke Apex 22 or something like it and repair it. That's how I got the Kappa which needs an rca soldered on, (easy) however the Alpine powers on with 0 output voltage and I am ordering a Liumy handheld $100 scope to start amp repairs. Plus I'm getting a flow station and I have a good soldering iron but I want another station.

      I pulled some of my old stuff from the ‘90’s (Alpine deck, Monster RCA’s, 4 Autotek 10” subs, and Hifonics “Industria” series amps) out of storage, and started installing it all into my ‘00 Jetta. The amps were made between the Zed era and Maxxsonics buyout. Made in USA, and have never seen any others in person. Only things new will be power wire and front stage components.

    I had one of those Orion subs back in the day! It was a 10" and I put it in a bazooka tube. Had it running on about 400 w RMS in the hatch on my 86' Z28 Camero and that thing slammed. I had my rearview mirror fall off a couple of times. People couldn't believe how loud it was for just being a single 10". Some thing about the Bazooka tube in that style hatch seemed to be super efficient. I had that sub for probably 5 or 6 years before it crapped out. The coil separated from cone. Glued it back together, resoldered the coil wires and got another year or two out of it before I finally retired it. It is my all time favorite sub (that I've owned). I still have the motor down in my basement hanging on a wall.

    Back in the 90's ..a friend of mine had a Chevy long bed dually that was lowered and with two 1500 watt Blaupunkt amps he had were so big , the footprint of the amps took up the whole bottom of the bed. Then he had 8 of those Orion 15s until the Earthquakes came out. You could feel the bass from half mile away or more. It was insane. Another guy i knew has an Impala with an insane amount of work done to it. He could lower it to the ground onto a skid plate, the tires would come off the ground a hair and the subs in the trunk were ported to the edges of the skid plate. He could play DJ Magic Mike and make the car semi hover like an air hockey puck.... just enough to be able to scoot the car sideways during the hard bass drops. It does seem like the old sckool shit just hits way harder!
