Courtney did an interview sometime in the late 90s where she mentioned Kurt had written a bunch of songs (she was probably exaggerating) that had never been recorded in studio but had been played live, which she said, would've been huge hit songs for Nirvana. Yea the only recording known of the song is from a few live performances. No demos or studio recording was done sadly. Belgium and Italy 91 and Crocodile Cafe in 92. I think there might be a couple more but I'm not sure. Have fun!
Yeah, I think you did a great job w this one. It’s pretty damn hard to even think that the instrumentation isn’t being played by Kurt, krist and Dave. The solo was badass too. I know I could probably just google an answer but do we know the situation surrounding the writing of this song? You did pretty damn good with this I have to admit. When I first heard it, I thought "yeah... yeah, this is damn close to how it would have probably sounded if it was recorded in the studio." Such a shame there are only 2 audience live versions of the song, but... overall, damn good job here boys!

The timing of Kurt's vocals are great. A lot of live performances are slightly off. Usually the singer has to keep in time with the instrumentation in the studio, but hear you had to follow Kurt's vocals.

But it was definitely worth the wait. Return of the Rat would be interesting to hear acoustically.
This is from the show they did at “The Crocodile” in Seattle in 1992. They were the opening act under the pseudonym “Pencap Chew”. It was a real surprise for the audience. I they were opening for Mudhoney. So, nice try with “Studio version” title…

I know for sure there's at least one '92 performance which is the one RIOT EARTH mentioned earlier from the Crocodile Cafe on 10/4/92. The version from 11/17/91 in Mezzago, Italy is probably one of if not the highest quality performance of the song we have currently.

You know, it’s possible Kurt knew it was a surefire hit and just wanted to keep it in the reserves in case of a writing drought. It’s an amazing song, but I can’t really hear it on In Utero. He made good artistic choices until the very end. I also think he wanted to down play his incredible pop sensibility after the massive success of Nevermind- this song released then would have added to the Nirvanamania which I think he wanted to cool down a bit- hence we got the classic In Utero.
