  • People Hearing for the First Time Part 2! Deaf & Hearing Impaired Get Cochlear Implants
From Silence to Sound - hearing loss can be described as an invisible disability.
Whilst hearing aids or cochlear implant are not some magical ‘fix’ for deaf people, because DEAF PEOPLE DON’T NEED TO BE FIXED. They’re just a tool to access sound and watching people experience this new sensory experiences so humbling.

I’m deaf in one ear. I have been since birth. One of my biggest fears is losing hearing in my second ear. I went 16 years of my life without hearing in one of my ears because hearing aids would never fit in my bad ear (there’s a size difference between my bad and good ear so it’s too small to fit the hearing aid mold in). Then I heard about the BAHA and I got surgery to get that. Everything was so loud compared to normal that even today if I don’t wear it for a couple days and I put my OSIA (I got a different hearing aid because there were complications with the BAHA) on, it’s like everything is amped up 10x more and I have to spend hours adjusting to the sound. I remember being so wonderstruck at hearing everything so loud. I could not imagine being fully deaf. When I lay on my good side with my head smushed into the pillow, the sound stops coming through completely and that’s the closest I’ve ever gotten. But I can always lift my head to hear if I don’t have my hearing aid in. Audiologists are one of the best people out there. They do so much work and they help so many people. I bawled my eyes out at this video

This reminded me of a post someone did on reddit, how a girl had gone deaf around 18 years old and her parents refused to learn ASL or even put on captions on movies because they were annoying. They refused to accommodate her so she said that if they don't at least try to learn a little ASL to show their support she wasn't going to visit anymore because she felt like a burden and everyone told her she was unreasonable for making the demand. It's nice to see these families so supportive after reading something like that.

Imagine hearing your own voice for the first time!
Now think about how the voice in their head would sound like!!!!!
    Do thoughts have sound?
    Just wow!!!!

I’m a bilateral Cochlear Implant recipient - the first thing I heard after switch on , and leaving the Audiology office was the elevator ‘ding’.
I knew that elevators ‘dinged’ but hadn’t heard one for 12 years - Bless Professor Grahame Clarke for his life’s work in developing this AMAZING technology - I now have the latest model and can stream music straight into my processor - so I can now wear ‘ear buds’ 😂and hearing on the phone via Bluetooth is SO EASY now - all I need to top it off would be to see the EAGLES live one more time and be able to hear them.🥰🥰🥰

Imagine being born with only 4 senses. Never have you heard your own voice, never have you heard music, never have you heard your mother telling you she loves you.
Imagine experiencing something new for the first time. Something you don't have a concept of, something everyone else has, something everyone else takes for granted.

This is so inspirational. I cried every time each person realized that they could hear normally. Thank each and everyone involved in this effort to allow these individuals to hear again.

Watching these and compilations of people with colorblindness seeing colors for the first time just shows how far we've come technologically and how much most of take for granted on a daily basis
