The question is not "why?" But more like, "what took you so long?". I bought a 1969 F600 cattle truck last December and a 2012 Freightliner Cascadia road tractor with a Cummins engine 2 months ago. I neither haul cattle nor have a trucking company. I bought them because I was 50 years old, i don't have a wife to bitch at me, I have the space to keep them and I've been breaking my balls at work for the last 33 years. I bought these vehicles as well as some other things over the years strictly because I wanted them. I have no obligation to prove anything otherwise to anybody else. The F600 is a project but an easy project and is rock solid and I paid next to nothing for it. The Freightliner was a good deal for what it is and is in perfect road condition. I have driven it to work and to Walmart. I get satisfaction out of walking past these vehickes in my backyard knowing they are mine. I may use the tractor for work in the future or I may not. I haven't handcuffed myself with justifying why I have it either way. Enjoy that truck, guilt free. You deserve it.
I like your video thanks for posting it sir I just bought a 1971 with the same miles as yours this last April absolutely love it wanted one most of my life. my dad had one when I was a kid
The LD is such a beast of an engine. When I bought my 68 M35A2, it had been sitting in a field for 4 years. It was on 10 flat tires, had sunk up to the differentials, had no batteries, and the fuel tank was filled to the brim with used motor oil. The gentleman I bought it from said “oh yeah, it’ll start.. they always start”. He rolled up next to it with his 5 ton, plugged in the big jumper cable, and when he pressed the start button, it started in under 3 seconds. We checked the fluids, did a break check, aired the tires, and I drove it 4 hours home. I’ve been dailying it for years now and haven’t yet had to really fix anything. I LOVE my deuce! I’m glad you appreciate the awesomeness of that truck. 👍
Reasons to own a m35a2 1. They are almost indestructible 2. No one will mess with you not even cops 3. With spray paint and lots of pvc pipes you can go under the ocean 4. Cheap 5. They are really cool 6. Great off-road in most situations 7. You can haul anything you want even cars 8.there almost as simple as can be 9. There is ways your supposed to drive it but you can drive it how ever you want it will still work even if you start in 3rd gear 10. Why not
Cheap and off road is a joke on these trucks.First of all, they aren't cheap...At all,I use to own a pair of them myself, and that 7.8L LDT-465 or LDS-465 is a gutless and sluggish engine, espiecally if it already has a fair amount of mileage and is becoming problematic. When I had my deuce and a halfs,I dealt with valve lash adjustment, hydraulic head seals, leaking air coolers, piston rod bearings, injection pump, head gaskets, and much more on the list.Keep in mind that was before 60,000 miles because that is the life span of these engines, trust me,they are in requirement of a rebuild once you hit those miles,if you are higher than that, you're lucky. Also, the Spraug transfer cases on these trucks are known to break, even easily,so using a air shift transfer case is a day and night difference with any of the variations. Now,down to the off roading part, you won't go anywhere for shit with those useless non directional tires, even with chains on them. Why did the Military use those Firestone 900×20's for 1950-1988? I have no damn idea, but it was a clear reason why even before, they used single tires on the GMC M135-M211 which most got transported to Canada however.Oh yeah, even though you can use the transfer case to deliver power to the front if necessary, these trucks have no Detroit lockers on them what so ever. But,the USMC at times did make it necessity to have deuce and a halfs and five ton trucks come with Detroit lockers in the rear axles, but it wasn't common and it's a rarity to find one from the Armed Forces that has them equipped. One of mine was one of those variants. The front axles on these trucks are either open differentials or limited slip though. You can easily purchase Detroit lockers,or there is even ARP air lockers that are only applicable to 2 1/2 ton trucks at that. When they came out with the M35A3-M109A4 away from the M35A2-M756A2,it was a update in some advantages, even though the 6.6L 3116 had 170 HP/404 TQ,it was far more reliable once you know about the potential exhaust valve studs and injector cup problematics they only could have, the Allison MT545 was nice but it was a 4 SPD compared to the Spicer 3053A 5 SPD,which gave it 45-53 MPH instead of 55-60 MPH,and the 48/1400×20 super singles were definitely a upgrade even though CTIS could probably cause a error with back pressure from the air lines, leaking gear oil from the rims, knuckles and boots in the way of seals, and a few other things. The multi-fuel in the deuces much like the M51A2-M348A2 was also kind of slacking,it was only 135-175 HP/330-447 TQ depending if it was a LDT-465,LT-465,or LDS-465,while the LDT-427 was way worse in the M35A1.It was weak in the five ton trucks, and even the gasoline OA-331 in the first M35's were more powerful, just like the R602 in the original M51-M348's.The M51A1-M348A1 with the EDNT-673 was a dream on torque at that, with 210 HP/711 TQ.Just to boil down how much of a headache those multi-fuels could be,the European Army and even Brazilian Navy, which got shipments of those trucks eventually retrofitted them with 12V 6BT's at 235 HP/460 TQ just like in the British Army with the 5.9L in the Alvis Sabre,Spartan, and Sultan when the Jaguar 4.2L started to become outdated. The Canadians however put Detroit 6V-53's in their deuces which is more than enough to say the least, you can't be in denial about a 2 stroke. The same engine still powers the M113A3 at 27,000 lbs when the M113 had the Chrysler 388 and was 24,000 lbs.
I have owned two of these, good trucks. I just used mine for parades and events. I then moved on to 5 tons for same thing, M923A2, power steering, automatic transmission.
I just found your channel thanks to Peg and his callout. Nice burn show, btw. Anyway, I relate to this video 100%. I picked up a FMTV 5 ton from government auction a few years ago and still can’t give a good answer as to why...oh well at least I’m not alone!
Nice drop side bed, the tools to put those belts on actually look really cheap but work exceptionally well. I will admit especially with a cheater pipe on the handle to get enough tension on the belt. Belts ,hoses wheel cylinders and shoes is a good place to start with. Just noticed its got a heater also good deal. Bought mine 12 years ago and went completely thru it but unfortunately I had a knee replaced and it is getting too much for me to drive but its not bad!
As a young Staff Sergeant in OIF 1 (early 2003) my Aviation unit put out a strange request for drivers. We were short on trucks and a search for M35 experienced drivers was made. The next thing I know I was driving in a convoy with a bunch of old crusty CW3/4 pilots and E-8/6 types including myself on our way back from Kuwait City to Udairi (aka Camp Buehring) with a lot of amused Privates serving as TC's, It was hilarious! I had become lovingly familiar with M35's because of my time in Korea circa April 93-94 (has it been that long ago already?) I still refer to that convoy as the Geezer Ball Express! Thanks for the video and awesome memories! God Bless!
Congrats on the Deuce she looks like a very decent start to more, bigger and better future additions! Thats never a problem till you have to buy 3 acres with a warehouse on it to keep all your Military toys, it starts to get to be an expensive hobby about THEN!
Well you got yerself a genuine multi fuel Deuce and a half. You can run that baby on JP 8 or a mix of gasoline and 10 weight oil, and pretty much everything in between. Well if nobody's messed with the original engine. Pretty friggin cool purchase. I also noticed it appears to have a heater kit installed. If it mostly works count yourself lucky. You can use that Deuce to haul your sled trailer out to the trails in the winter, and you'll be one of the most badass guys out on the trail, at least IMO. If a man never questions the purchases he makes, he is either nuts, or so rich it doesn't matter. I hope you have fun with that thing. Not the most comfy ride in the world, but there are fewer and fewer M35s so in a way it's kinda collectible. Take it easy man, and have fun. That's what counts. 😎👍
All of the diesel, oil, and fluid in the world can be used in any compression engine. Both of my F250 XLT's have used JP8 once before and I had a 6.5L K2500 that use to run on red diesel. The difference with the multi-fuel engines in the M35A2-M756A2 for 1966-1988 and M51A2-M348A2 for 1966-1969 is that the LDT-465,LT-465,and LDS-465 have different pistons, injectors, and fuel pumps that are similar to combustion engines, not diesel engines. That is why they are even able to use gasoline when it's mixed with diesel or motor oil.It was the same way for the D333C used in some of the M520-M877's for 1961-1976. The only problem when using different fuels is that the fuel pumps will dislike it,usually a inline fuel pump solves this issue anyway.

@@toocheaptosmoke Yep, I had that happened to me, ran across a great deal for one, 8k and its in very good condition, the thing is I just recently bought a humvee. I really didn't want to spend that much but I couldn't let that slip away, especially for the price I see very good ones going for
@@toocheaptosmoke I would have to agree. Either of the 671's would be plenty. Ok so i have a very important question. So i can sell my vehicle for around $20K and get this deuce with a matching trailer for $7500 and its completely rebuilt (or at least it is on the inside and exterior, who knows about the mechanical aspect of it) and the only thing thats got me on the fence is how the gas will be and how well it will operate in cold weather. Not sure, would certainly be cool to know the history of it. One thing I noticed is it has stenciled on the doors the marking for the arctic/cold weather grease, so must have spent time somewhere up north?
I kinda wana get one of these and convert it to a hybrid, electric drive with a smaller fuel engine to power the batreries. Kinda do like locomotives nowadays. Then i could charge it off my house and have limitless range with far better fuel economy

I kinda wana get one of these and convert it to a hybrid, electric drive with a smaller fuel engine to power the batreries. Kinda do like locomotives nowadays. Then i could charge it off my house and have limitless range with far better fuel economy

Good old Burt!
Buy your tires from Govplanet.com. I’ve been able to pick up 12.00R 20’s for $250 for 5 good tires.
it' the perfect vehicle for picking up the mother in law from the airport; she travels heavy and it's loud so you don't have to hear her chatting all the way home

You can daily drive about anything if your standards for comfort are low enough, haha.
