The staining sounds like the expensive and not so permanent part...

It's actually pretty affordable. The cost in our market is less than $1 per square foot for material and labor for staining. Yes, it isn't permanent but does last a long time. We usually see the stain last at least 10 years and then it's a matter of power-washing and reapplying a stain again.
