  • In this video I will be taking you through another one of my youngest brother’s bonsai.
    Podocarpus macrophyllus - Also Known As Buddhist Pine.
    I will be repotting the bonsai into the pot that was in my previous video with Luke’s Golden Larch.
    When Does A Bonsai Need RePotting? This Golden Larch Is A Great Example!
    • When Does A Bonsai Nee...
    Firstly I remove the bonsai from the pot, and begin to unravel the old roots to reveal the finer roots we are looking for.
    I then remove some excess all around the edges to ensure I can get a decent amount of new soil round it all in the pot.
    I use the trusty mesh to cover the holes and have wire in place to secure the bonsai into my chosen position.
    I then fill the new (ish) pot with soil. Using:
    * Compost
    * Pearlite
    * Large Grain Sand
    * Bark Chipping
    I then take the bonsai for little hair cut! And maybe it gets one big drastic cut!! Check the video to see why!! 😉
    After receiving a new look I then finish of with wiring a few branches.
    I hope you enjoyed this video and was able to take something from it! Thank You For watching & having your support!!
    Wishing You All A Happy Easter!! 🐣

    nice care for those roots and what topside you could get away with. As you said, a lot of these go to a home to dry up and die or get root rot then dry up and die. Your brothers at least have kept them alive and relatively healthy. You take them the extra mile with repots like this. Nice video.

      Thank you Taco, he loves his trees but views them very differently than Someone who practices bonsai! As you’ve probably seen most my trees are in development Root works probably my most honed bonsai skill! Roots are a very important element for me! I’m working some pine from seedlings to try get a solid nebari which you don’t seem to see often.

    Nice video!! I am very much a beginner Bonsai enthusiast and bought two days ago a Podocarpus at a local nursery here in the south of the US from the Clearance lot..... in fact, it turned out to be 3 different ones clumped together in a 7 gallon pot (not as Bonsai, they were supposed to be used in a yard, I guess). I spent the better part of yesterday to separate them out and putting them in new containers. Huge thick pinky-thick taproots that I had to remove..... lost a bunch of fine roots as a result of it. Have my fingers crossed that they survive..... Subbed to your channel !!

      That sounds like a win! Although a common commercial bonsai over here I think it’s Really nice species I like the foliage and barks nice quite early on. There user friendly and tolerate the uk winter! A well drained soil and steady watering I’m sure yours will be on the way! Thanks for the Sub 🌱

      Thanks for the reply. So far, so good. Managed to get three interesting looking mini pre-bonsais (if you can even call them that). We get a lot of rain here in South Carolina and it is pretty humid most of the year. I have moved them to plastic training pots with draining soil. I have done some wiring, but will let them be until spring......

    Nice job on the roots getting them into the new pot. Wiring explained very well. Tree and new home are looking great together.

      Yeah surprising really they are a common garden centre/ internet beginners gift tree. Lots must get sold and killed 😢 He’s kept this one thriving minus the broken branch.

      @@nillysbonsai9636 I have two: a 2 1/2 ft tall one that I bought from The Japanese Garden at Mawgan, near Newquay. And a typical garden centre specimen.
