Ben Leo says that dumbing down times tables for children in schools to protect their anxiety would create 'a generation of even bigger snowflake adults'.

Our state schools are rotten to the core with this rubbish
Indeed they are, BUT most parents are pretty determined to avoid the guilt or sleepless nights by looking too closely at what goes on in them.
Dumbing down is the norm lol
I home educated my two children, best thing i ever did.
Well done! I would too if I had kids
Mine start home school today
Works always needs poorly educated people to stack shelves.
Let me tell you this. I knew how about the world was being decolonised around me as a kid.
Everything my history teachers and geography teachers taught me was a lie. people from all over the world lied to me to but when I look back at my education everything I learnt in life was from the fundamentals of what I was taught there.
They then changed exams from o levels with no course work and then to GCSE which I Rebelled against with course work.
At this time I had moved to Sheffield from London during the miners strike had my own personal problems never fitted in anywhere.
What I'm trying to say is let them educate you but now they have admitted it's about indocteration thats a good foundation in honesty from the education system itself to be challenged
I failed in life in the 70`s and 80s that was never geared towards British people that still effects the UK today but don't educate your own kids as we all grow older that's where education comes from itself.
Education it's biggest mistake was judging children as adults for futures today they will be regretting they have done that.
Society has been built on fundamentalism that's why you have further education it takes you beyond the basics what I'm trying to say is people who knew beyond the fundamentals of what they taught would always suffer anyway but now article's like this have come out that's one step to honesty and why lots of people have failed in Life.
Our ancestors would be ashamed of us
They wouldn't believe it was real.
Keep kids dumb, ignorant and distracted with shiny things and they will fall for anything.

Too fragile to learn anything these days...
Number blocks is the schools testing tool for times tables. They are not learning times tables they are learning how to keep putting in an answer till they get it right.
I worked for a while with three Gen Zs. God it was 3 months of walking on eggshells! They added self diagnosed anxiety issues almost daily!
Thanks a lot, Dr Google!
When didnt kids get anxious about doing exams or tests? They arent much of a test if you arent worried about it. Its weak teachers wanting to pander to every stupid thing
@@stephenw2992 well I was blessed being born a boomer and never took any exams in my school life. If teachers deemed you were thick then they couldn’t be bothered with you. As in there is nepotism in some schools, to push their personal politics to children whom they regard as their personal ticket to further prosperity and opportunities.
They're motivated in self interest and only for this purpose..
Now young children are so overwhelmed with talking about their genitals they're not taught basic calculation.

Teaching kids how to spell and write phonetically is a big problem here!
As a retired teacher, I can assure you teaching basic English skills to first language pupils can be very, very challenging in some of our inner-city schools in poorer areas. This is because in every year group, in every school, children who speak no English at all are constantly dropped into the mix. Of course, the problems are greatly compounded because English is the language through which the entire National Curriculum is delivered. This is Two-Tier Britain. Two-tier policing, two-tier health provision, and a two tier education system in which the quality of teaching and learning is dependent largely on the school's postcode.

Being a dunce didnt hold her back so your argument is invalid
Every kid needs to be able to do maths and English AND common sense and social awareness - it’s not a choice between them
School mornings waaaay back in the 50's consisted of at least half an hour doing times tables - I honestly don't think any of us ever felt anxiety! Yet, my 9 year old grand daughter suffers from 'anxiety' from just having to go to school - because of the bullies & the absolute rubbish that is shoved down their throats.
The worst part is that the school system just shrugging their shoulders when told about bullying
I once had a headmaster who openly laughed at me when I asked schools
Schools are loathsome places
Because of bullies, or because of her low resilience to bullies?
Bullies target the weakest people, not the strongest.
In the 70s and early 80s also had to learn our tables and had a mental arithmetic and spelling test every Friday morning.
One particularly good teacher ( technically...she was not very nice in other ways though) would get us to stand behind our chairs and recite our timetables whilst doing daft things like star jumps or hopping and touching our noses. It made for a bit of fun and took out the idea of fear and treated chanting our times tables more like learning to sing a song instead.
Learning my tables really well before seniors really helped with confidence and absolutely should be taught.
I was horrified that my sons were just being taught to say the sequence of answers i.e 9,18, 27, 36, 45, 54 etc so they had to count their fingers to know where they were in the sequence. I taught them the 'old fashioned' way, chanting once 9 is 9, 2 nines are 18, 3 nines are 27 etc so they just would know exactly how many of a number multiplied gave the answer straight away.
The most recent methods for teaching division are a long winded nonsense now as well.
@AndrooUK you know nothing about her! She is extremely intelligent & and does not deal with your average idiot very well. She stands up to the bullies but lack of useful teachers makes it difficult because the bullies just keep pushing. Do not comment on things you have no real knowledge of.
Best thing for sure, we’re homeschooling ours. Schools are a joke
They will thank you for it. My hat off to you Sir.

When I was at school we had end of term exams every term. We had 'O'level exams from Lower V every term. I had exams so often that I barely noticed them when the real exams came along. It was just what one did all the time.
Same for me back in the 70's.
Schools are being dumbed down and have been for years. A woke culture has enveloped schools and even more so universities.
@@Eleventhearlofmars It is the 70's culture of all must have prizes. I work in my local primary school. During the election there were posters everywhere regarding Vote Labour, The Greens, the Lib Dems. Not a single Tory poster anywhere. The children were allowed to vote in their own election and guess what, Labour won. I asked one child if she knew who the Tories were, she did not have a clue. You are a very brave person indeed if you side with the Tories on anything in the staff room.
With home education exploding you'd think the education boards would actually start asking why that is... instead of doubling down on the nonsense. Maybe a new education system can emerge which markets itself as non woke
Dumbing down for the dumbest
In year 4, my teacher made us do a 10 question times table test every single day. If everyone in the class got all 10 correct we didn't need to do the tests for a week. She motivated us to learn and push eachother to help eachother so everyone would improve and be rewarded for this.
Mrs Percy may you rest in peace ♥️
Hold on, UK! You're being tested for your principles
I am a university professor in Canada. The problems are even worse here. My students are so poorly prepared for university that I had to cut all of the math out of my lectures. I also had to simplify the wording used in my exams. They know all of the 74 genders, though.
My cousin is a professor in Halifax, NS at a university, and she says the assignments handing in are middle school level at best! Her husband is a high school teacher, and unable to give a zero grade, kids can hand their work in whenever (meeting deadlines and managing workload practice for the real world!) Consequently, a deluge of assignments land in his inbox before the end of term and then they start complaining their grades and reports are taking too long! No wonder teachers are leaving the profession in droves!
Now watch, soon the only book in schools will be the qu'ran.
There are some schools where this is almost the case already. Segregated classes between boys and girls, girls in headscarves, no PE or music allowed in the school.

This has been happing from back when i was at school. Teachers used to try tell us just cause its a fact dont mean its true. If you dont teach kids how to cope with nerves and not just run then you wont set them up for life. Nervous anytime you go for job or any situation
I’m 78 and learnt my tables by rote and reading around the age of 7. So useful throughout my life as was reading, loved it. We also got caned if we messed around. General knowledge lessons widened our thinking and desire to find out more. It was tough at times but we benefited immensely in later life. I never passed my GCSE’s my ability to absorb useful information necessary to run a pretty successful business was due to practical thinking learned throughout my schooling.
I didn't pass my 11 plus but I have had a very successful life.
Without tests you cannot truly evaluate their proficiency in any subject.
And in places like Singapore, getting a B on your report card will result in the other kids insulting you by saying you're stupid.
In Malaysia, They Wouldn't even care because after Year 11 Studies, They Don't Wanna to go University.
During covid we replicated school at home, work given from teachers. Home schooling can be so much different and works very well for many families .
The mind virus marches on
I taught for twenty years (second career, following twenty years overseas in mining) I was staggered by the poor general knowledge exhibited by younger teachers. Their experience was entirely in the academic world. Nothing to add to their lessons over and above their specific subject. I was fortunate at school. We had spitfire pilots and mechanics naval commanders, code breakers, interpreters, POWs, steel industry workers; they were all serious characters with sound principles, no nonsense, and practicalskills and honest down-to-earth common sense.
homeschooling is the way for healthy and educated children.
F’in joke. Pointless sending children to school.

Absolutely ridiculous.
So teachers no longer teach as well as not do! No education at all.
Unbelievable!
What is it they're doing in Finland? Something like focusing on the children's individual interests or talents?
Both my kids in high school instinctively know school is teaching them mainly useless information, and that's without me baiting them. Very little life skills are taught and never have been really. Not only that, the education system has not changed in decades, and back in a time when the was very few kids with spectrum disorders, until the Matrix system poisoned them in many devious ways.
Now many kids with disorders struggle to process a overwhelming education not fit for a purpose.

Oh my goodness, children need to go to school to learn, not be taught all this other rubbish. We have all been anxious about something at school, it certainly hasn't done us any harm. 27 years a teacher and I retired early. It was never about the kids, I ❤ them. It was the terrible leaders and nepotism in the big chain academics.
Anxiety is rising because kids are being so coddled! You try and get rid of every little inconvenience they start to expect that from everything, exposure is what helps build mental strength. Literally what my psychologist told me to help me with my anxiety and it works.
Bart Simpson summed up it best when he said 'Let me get this straight: we're behind the rest of our class and we're going to catch up to them by going slower than they are?'. That's the UK education system in a nutshell.
Schools have always been that way. They're intended to make life easier for employers, rather than the kids themselves.
I can remember similar policies back in the 70s. Teaching English grammar was seen by many as an encumbrance, suppressing a child's creativity and a denial of regional vernacular.
All this does is deny them the chance to compete on equal terms with public school educated children in the pursuit of university places and better paid careers.
Children's mental health is formed in the first three years of life.
The more they are mothered they more resilient they are.
Value mothers and don't look down on women who do it.

Home schooling is the way. Even with 1 hour you can do more than they cover in multiple days at school. And no toxic ideologies and stress from over socialisation.
Who dented our kids' earning potential during the lockdowns?!
80110ck5 - the problem is we indoctrinate them first to think that failure here, now is the end of everything - when I was at school the exam didn't matter; as long as I did my best! There were no issues about failure - change that narrative to: an indoctrination, that failure now is a problem and you induce anxiety. Learn the TT by rote till it's seconf nature and build from there - that's why child born in the 1890's could do maths - I know they were my Grandparents.
The reason is because it is the teachers. Exam failure is the end of everything because it makes the TEACHERS look bad. They dont care about the numbers on your paper, they care about the numbers on their paper. Some teachers genuinely do care and you can tell when you listen to them. However that is far from the norm.
Since when do you 'brandish' a backbone?
We did this in Canada and it was a huge mistake, now they are desperately trying to reintroduce the back into the schools. You do need timetables because it interferes with your ability to do higher level math. Plus students need to learn how to learn and memorize things. I have students who cannot remember their home addresses.
I teach my son maths, before reception he had memorized upto 12x12, prime numbers, square, square roots... School told me at the end of reception he'd probably pass the year six paper
We don't have Schools anymore.
Just Self Esteem Clinics.
UK schools especially in areas of Labour LEA control have been doing this for sometime.
Why so many people have worked, scrimped and saved to send their children to small independent PRIVATE SCHOOLS to escape this indoctrination and to send their children to schools where education and NOT POLITICS is the first priority.
This is why the VAT increase on those schools is regarded as the politics of envy vote winner ticket!
By imposing this increase many of those excellent schools will close as the increase will be passed onto the fees to the already crushed, aspiring middle class parents! .
I can understand why we cant educate kids the same way private schools do!!!! There’s a growing number of wealthy individuals……. So give their education to tax funding schools.

Read John Taylor Gatto’s “Weapons of mass instruction” and “Dumbing us down” If you can you will Home Ed after reading, and these were written well before the current insanity
All of this seems to be ignoring that the subjects you learn in school are not actually about the subjects themselves but providing you with the tools you need to function in an office environment. Maths is about learning to break complex problems down into smaller ones. Writing essays in history is learning how to research and format information. Taking exams is about preparing you to work under time pressure. Is it less useful to vocations like plumbing and such? Yes, but it does serve a purpose for most people and is something that should be taught properly.
We did a mental maths test every friday when I was at school in the mid 90's. Did us no harm at all, bloody snowflakes.
