Both you and the dogs did great for the first outing of the season! And the video picking up the birds in dense leaf cover sure takes skill. I’m impressed.
Looks like a great day! We’re headed to the UP next weekend and am super excited about it. Been up there several years and it’s the highlight of our year.
North Central BC here. Just starting my new buddy (English Setter) George, turned one year in July, we picked him up in April. His recall is poor right now as he is having too much fun. Unfortunately cold wet spring wiped out the chicks this season, not the best conditions for a rookie. Last year it was insane, the numbers we had to shoot at. My Gordon got very ill and was put to rest Jan. 12. Lucy was in her prime at seven so it was very tough. George is going to be good, hunts close. Retrieve is OK and will improve. He had training at his kennel and responds well to the whistle. Watching your dogs work is a treat. I had two Brittanys in the past and they were a lot of fun. Enjoyable video's.
Best of luck to you and George the rest of the season, fun times ahead! We had similar rains early summer that I think wiped out some broods. Bird numbers seem ok, but up and down in certain spots. Happy hunting and safe travels.
@@UplanderLifestyle I love your videos and appreciate you taking us along. I also appreciate you putting your wife’s needs first. On the note of dogs, I’m considering a dog and would love to see you working your dogs in the off season. Nothing like a “how to video” more like tips and tricks. Just food for thought.
Great job! Yeti and Aspen are such marvellous dogs! I'm probably heading out this week for my first outing of the season. We've had some windy days up here recently so that should've knocked some of the cover off the trees.
@@UplanderLifestyle Thank you and best of luck to you, in turn. I got two ruffed and three spruce. The day started promising, but then I ran into birds that I heard but couldn't see, or simply couldn't get shots away. The last ruffed I bagged was huge!
Should be best pheasant season sense the 90s.. were commercial bee keepers seeing wild birds in field hasn't had birds in years. From like Lapeer north most of the crp has birds again.
I’m headed up end of October… looking forward to starting a couple new dogs and of course getting Scout back out … looking forward to watching your season!
Aaaagggggghhhhhhh!!!!!!!! I cannot wait to head back home tomorrow for bird season, I’ve been waiting all year and I’m stuck down south for a couple weeks but I’m headed home tomorrow and I can’t wait!
All good Scott. I know a lot has changed over the years, but for the most part, how things are now is how I've always known them to be. Best of luck when you make it out with the dogs this year, cheers!
Really enjoy your videos. I've been wanting a sxs for some time but never found one the instantly "fit". Saw you had purchased a Weatherby, finally had the opportunity to handle one and loved it. Purchased just a couple of weeks ago, so far 3 for 4 on grouse! Heading to arrowhead MN area for a week arriving 6th Oct. Can't wait!
Outstanding video as always. I loved your quail hunting from Az last year. That's where I hunt. I did really well on the 1st Dove Season. I limited on every hunt. Only 3 weeks until the Quail opener! Good luck, and good hunting!
Do you change up between which shotgun shells you decide to shoot throughout the season? Just curious on what size loads you are using and why. Thanks! Keep the grouse video’s coming! We love them!
Great dog work! I've paused my Wisconsin grouse hunting until they get the wolf situation under control. Where I've hunted in Price and Oneida county the population is just too thick.
I usually watch in my phone but it’s broken right now love the content man I got my first spruce grouse this year and it’s been going good so far !!! Gunna order some merch soon!!!
🤣It's hard to keep batting 1,000. Just got out for my first trip the other day, specifically for Prairie Chickens, got skunked trying new spots. Great way to start the season, woodcock should be migrating in soon.
Do you notice different tendencies while hunting in those dryer Oak environments? (scrubby, as you call it) I just moved from clay country of NE Minnesota to a sandier area further south. The crops have been very interesting. I’ve found picked apart acorns, oak galls, and hazelnuts as opposed to clover & other greens.
The cover definitely looks a lot different between sandier and darker soil areas. I typically don't hunt sandy soil areas very often, as they just don't seem to hold as many birds. But when I do, I typically don't hunt aspen as the cuts do not have much cover in them besides just aspen. I like finding brushy areas around aspen, these areas where I'm at usually have big thickets of autumn olive (invasive) but the birds like them for food and cover.
The kid and I hunted the Cadillac area the weekend prior to this. Hot and sticky with only one flush off-camera the whole weekend. Hope things pick up in a couple weeks.
I just finished training my bird dog (3 year old gsp) can you make a video on identifying grouse food sources or how to pick areas to go? Had a rough first hunting weekend in the Adirondacks
I'll try and cover some on the next one. This time of year it's usually soft mass crops - thornapples, raspberries, etc anything that has a fruit or berry on it. If acorns are dropping, they will feed on those as well.
I'm beginning to think I hunt on a planet named Nogrouseynohownowhere instead of the eastern Cascades. Out almost every day, but have yet to see a bird. Rotisserie chicken tonight maybe??
I’d love to see an episode how you do your e scouting prior to heading into the woods! A quick synopsis of what you look for in terms of cover on the map to optimize your hunts.
Awesome, congrats! I personally just like to add a favorite seasoning and cook it on medium heat in some oil until both sides are browned and cooked through the middle. It's simple and always turns out good.
7.5s, and even 8s if I have them. Smaller the shot size the better for early season with an open choke tube. The open choke gives a really wide spread, and smaller shot side gives you more pellets in the spread, plus the smaller shot size goes through the foliage better without loosing energy.
I too missed my Montanna trip this year. I hunted Michigan for over 50 years Alcona cty. First thing that happened the feds came in and took over our bird camp camping area, then Alcona cty let ATVs on the snow mobile trails, the Mi raised the non resident tags to $150,then Mi brought in ALL these new gun laws. No matter how bad I want to come up,I just cannot bring myself to fight all these problems. It seems Michigan just keeps shooting themselves in the foot!!!!
There haven’t been new gun laws here in years and if the USFS came and took over your land then it sounds like it was public to begin with and not actually yours. There’s also tons more public land here in the state than in Alcona county, don’t hunt here fine but don’t complain that people are taking it away from you when opportunities have never been better in Michigan for grouse especially with the GEMS
I will, just chose not to on these ones. They were all really small young birds. Later on in the year and birds are bigger I start keeping whole carcass.
Hi I like you're hunting you explain you're hunting as you go along thats so nice keep up the good hunting I don't know your name I'm Dave take care

This makes me jealous!! We have a two bird limit, and the season has been shortened the last few years. So we kill a lot of pheasant.
Best of luck this season, thanks for following along!
Good job.
Thank you 👍🏻
Early Season = family groups still together. Lots of shooting opportunities for multiple points or flushes in one spot. Love this time of year !
Definitely makes for some fast action when you get into clumps of birds, good luck!
I see big coveys all season long. The birds collectively know where the best forage & cover is.
Deer Ticks are HORRIBLE in NW Michigan …… Tough to find Any Birds !!!!
Really enjoy your videos and the dog work is always great. Did you spend the night in your truck? Looking forward to your next video.

Wonderful! Appreciate the slow motion footage. It's hard to follow their flight at regular speed.
Could use a slow motion button in real life cuz they are fast when they lift off 🤣
@@UplanderLifestyle I know what you mean. Cover here is still fully leafed and you just catch glimpses of the birds as they fly.
Great hunt!! Curious if you checked the crops to see what they were feeding on?
I did not, I normally don’t. I know what food is in the area and what they are most likely feeding on already.

Schneider Island
Sigrid Harbors
Northern mn I presume?
how come you dont take the legs
I will, just chose not to on these ones. They were all really small young birds. Later on in the year and birds are bigger I start keeping whole carcass.
What does Grouse taste like . . chicken?
Yes it does there’s almost no difference
Oh it’s soooo good! One of my all time things to harvest
Yes, just leaner.
Leaner and obviously no added steroids and/or foreign additives. Ruffed is the best tasting in my opinion.
Killing a bird just to get the breast? What do you do with the rest of it?
a grouse IS just breast meat, my guy. There's zero meat on the wings and the legs together are like a baby carrot sized amount of meat.
Those were balsams, not pines.
Which is, a member of the pine family.
Then you should also call all people homonids.
